Sound-glitch free version here: • Why do women have brea...
No one knows, but this is my hypothesis. Warning: contains no graphic erotic images whatsoever, sorry. Just a bloke talking.
Support me on Patreon: / lindybeige
Want to read more on this topic? I have a longer (yes, LONGER) version of my hypothesis in an on-line essay here: www.lloydianasp...
More ranty videos here: • Rants
I hope that I have avoided crudeness enough to avoid shocking my viewers. This is a scientific hypothesis, and I make no apology for not copiously illustrating the subject in a manner that may have pleased some.
It may amaze some viewers that as I talked, I was missing out chunks of the argument for the sake of brevity. I had a stopwatch below the camera, and you can see me glance down at it with mounting horror a few times in the video. This meant that by the second half of the video, I had to do rather a lot of thinking on my feet to keep the train of thought going in the light of things that I had not said earlier. This subject was a definite strain on my ability to do an entire video in one continuous shot.
It amazed me that this video was rejected as a vehicle for sponsorship, because of its 'sensitive topic'. This was the result of a culture-clash. In the USA, people find breasts a shameful topic, whereas the rest of the world seems generally more relaxed on the matter. When it was rejected, I didn't know whether it was the human evolution aspect of the video that made it 'sensitive' or the fact that the body part was one unique to women. Would the evolution of knees or beards be similarly sensitive?
Lindybeige: a channel of archaeology, ancient and medieval warfare, rants, swing dance, travelogues, evolution, and whatever else occurs to me to make.
You can now buy the music I use over the end-plates of my videos, which was written as the theme music for The Adventures of Stoke Mandeville, Astronaut and Gentleman: lindybeige.ban...

Then there's the thing about guys who buy cars to attract chicks ending up with the kind of chicks who are attracted to cars, which isn't necessarily a good thing. Some of them are gold-diggers, and some are gearheads, and the former are often ditzy on top of being greedy. I guess you don't have that problem with tanks, since tanks aren't status symbols.

Talking about things like these, and then realize that your own experiences confirmes it, can be funny to some. Laughing at something, anything, is not a "teen thing". Getting pregnant is a huge investement and takes its toll on the body, risking death-by-childbirth, and having to invest lost of reserves into keeping the offspring alive (after having it nesting like a parisite inside your body for 9 months) you are stuck with it for years! ...all makes a body go bankrupt very fast! I have a complementary theory to propose. Humans have a pretty long prepubescence and males wouldn't want to waste time and resources courting a female that wasn't fertile yet. But with stealth fertility it's hard to know when that is. Breasts (and other secondary sexual characteristics) are a way for women to advertise that they have reached the age of fertility without giving away specific ovulation periods.

In hunter gatherer societies, menses isn't much of a secret (nor are widened hips, pubic hair, and other secondary sex characteristics). My pet theory is that it has something to do with weaning, such as the human ability to wetnurse, which could be important in small tribe arrangement in which amount of food available might vary drastically.

You mention female Chimps (I think) having pink butts when in estrus (heat). It seems that most primates find butts to be a sexual attractor. When a Human is standing upright, their apparent butt size is reduced compared to when moving on four limb. There is a theory that Breast on a female mimic (to some extent) the sexual characteristics of the butt. How it came to be that females have breasts when not lactating is a mystery. You also didn't (seem to) mention that human female breasts do grow when then are nursing, and shrink again after they have stopped.

Except the predator is usually, these days, another human. And the main predator of women is men. However, men are more likely to use violence on another man. Breasts? Breasts prevent that - it is strongly frowned upon to hit a woman. Breasts *immediately* tell you, the aggressor, not to kill that one, she'll be useful, but kill that one, he'll be a threat.

I believe you have completely missed his point. When he made that comment, he meant to say that we don't have a word that is *commonly* and *frequently* used to refer to women who haven't been pregnant. Of course there is a scientific word for it, but we don't commonly use it and most people don't know about it. That suggests - which is the point Lloyd was trying to make - that our society seems to put more emphasis on virginity, the lack of sexual contact, rather than the fact that a woman has never been pregnant. He compared this state of things with those of other societies where people commonly discuss and identify women by stating, with one single term, whether she's been pregnant or not.

i agree with your theory but i think your theory isn't the primary reason why they evolved. I speculate that it is because of how tribal humans are, with multiple families living and raising young together. Therefore, women who retained their breasts would've had the ability to feed the young of women in the tribe who were unable to produce sufficient milk. Therefore, tribes with a greater proportion of women with permanent breasts would've had a greater number of their offspring survive, and those genes wouldve been passed on in greater numbers

Something to consider about a limiter on breast size - big breasts *hurt*. Continuous back and neck pain, which can trigger migraines as well, impacts on general health. Breasts evolved to serve a purpose and they do (did), just like the peacocks tail, it tells wether or not you are well fed and have a good immune system. Breasts are made up of fatty tissue, and the more weight a woman gains, the larger her breasts grow. They serve the same function as a Camel's humps. That is why big breasts are "more" sexy. It shows Health and survivalbility. That also explains why breat size, in general, is larger the further you get from equator, where food is harder to come by in Winter. Having large breasts, or being able to grow large breasts when gaining weight during the summer, is a HUGE advantage, and THAT is sexy. Sorry for my bad English and sentense structure.

@Carol Ann Zilla Your statement does not make mine less true. A skinny girl with large breasts, when gaining weight, will get larger breasts. Same goes for a Overweight girl with small breasts. When she takes on more weight, so will her breasts and if she Looses weight so does her breasts. How much your breast size relates to your body fat index, depends on genetics, but is is a factor for all women. Of cause Camels dont use their hump(s) directly when feeding their calf. But if there is no "fuel" in the hump(s) there wont be any milk either.

@Lindybeige It's scary how quickly our modern thoughts and preferences change with new medications, supplements and injections coming out on every market, every year. Your video made me realize how rapidly these new modifications and the conversations surrounding them shift or change. Certain sound-thought-theories are being backpeddled by these new developments, and I would love to hear your thought process on the effects all this has. In case you aren't familiar, here's the standard youth in Suburban North America: Now teenage girls can grow pseudo-fertile ta-ta's and use these for all the profile and status you'd think an 18 y/o camgirl to expect. I'm talking about making fake IDs more believable; posting anonymous underage porn ripped straight off of snapchat (ever heard of snapchat-PHANTOM? your anonymity is a lie and a joke for Phantom users) and WAY more Romeo & Juliet relationships struggling to make us think this is all cool. No, not the pizza presenting pedophiles. I mean sugardaddies, drug dealers and older peers who lowered their bar or wanted something easier to control. The biggest allure for any of these type of 'men' in the underage females' eye is the access these older men can provide free or nearly free birth control-- used for tricking female hormones so that he doesn't have to wear a rubber, and she gets to bloom earlier than her school friends. It's a mutual relationship which is surprisingly more common in females. Maybe not as surprising since their relationship is easier to conceal, thanks to the ability to pose as a mother. You could say this is the fault of the medical system for allowing free birth control for youth. Maybe you could blame the medication for not being controlled enough, or perhaps having unnecessary effects. I would argue them to be undesirable effects, for the reasons mentioned before. Teens think they don't need plastic surgery when they can trick their body into growing a greater curve. More food for thought... Naturally, MBLA (yes, manboylove-association) has tried to point out a cultural shift in "younger love being more and more prominent in our society every day" probably because they're jealous of the universal desire for boobs. Beyond that, nurturing the cultural obsession with reaching these newly enabled heights of bodily maturity has come to a true head in our youth as a supposed 'mental health crisis'. Hormone Heroes swept into our television and media with boys trying to grow boobs and girls trying to prevent their from coming in. These are meant to be inspiring antagonists. Can you believe that? All this nutty crap weighs in from both sides and becomes translated as 'mental disease' when filtered through children. One side is preaching that you can be whoever or whatever you want to be. While the other preaches peace of mind after death-- except for those who break the norm. They get to burn in hell for eternity. Talk about pressure. Yet, the pressure and trauma actually come from the fanatics who uphold these beliefs on either side; not the actual ideas of the beliefs. And thus our 'advanced' societies have become inhospitable war-grounds fought on the planes of thought, only spills into reality when someone reaches a breaking point. But anyways, mis-prescribed birth control was the first body modification method to be popularized by our modern youth. And it's remained relatively incognito for some reason, while serving as the gateway to what's referred to by some as the LGBTQ crisis and others as the anti-depressants crisis, or even the simple mental health of youth crisis. Thanks to our wild variety of divided parties, we can't even agree on a name let alone begin to start discussing how to address the issues at hand. I'd love your speculation about how this came to be, Lindy. I personally believe this could all be from one of two options. 1. Societal warfare imposed by 'enemies' of some kind 2. A labyrinth of government issues allowing pharma to decide they'd profit on this new phenomenon. We need our classic, god-given boobs back. I can't believe I'm saying this, but if we averagesd size A... crime stats would probably decrease concerning minor-involved crimes, both victims and perps

It's interesting how your thought process led you to the cuckolding hypothesis as the most suitable one. I imagine there's another possibility, related to male reproductive organ anatomy and good old tradition of... group reproductive activities without much care for consent. It could be that indicating non-fertility drastically lowered such encounters and gave females additional control over who's gonna be daddy.
@00Trademark00
@00Trademark00 7 жыл бұрын
I think that this is not very likely. The reason for that is that the chances of a random sexual encounter resulting in pregnancy are rather low and it usually takes several weeks of a sexual relationship to produce an offspring (this is also at least a part of the reason for male sexual choice - successfully producing an offspring requires some amount of commitment even for men and even if they don't look after the child at all, which means they will also discriminate between women and how much attention they pay to each of them, which means that the women have to compete for men as well as men have to compete for women). Since women aren't ovulating openly, even if they only have breasts when they're infertile, you still don't know that they are fertile when they don't have them. Also, we are talking about an era when people lived in small tribes and rape would not very likely be tolerated. Chimpanzees who try to do that are either beaten up by the female herself, her female friends or another male (the females protect each other and the male is either the alpha male who wants to prevent sexual access of other males to females one way or another or he might simply be trying to get a favour of the female or her friends - chimps have fairly complex relationships which one might even call "politics" with not too much exaggeration). There is essentially no privacy and very little secluded space in such an environment, so the rapist has to attack the woman in a close proximity of others who will help her and the rapist is likely going to be punished. Rape might happen when an enemy tribe attacks yours but I doubt the increased chance of not being raped then is in itself enough to outweigh the costs of permanent breasts. Especially since when the other tribe attacks and all your warriors are killed or subdued you will likely either be killed or enslaved anyway. Incidentally, the difficulty of rape in such a society might be why in some cultures today (and most cultures until fairly recently) it is the rape victim who is often blamed - it sort of makes sense in the prehistoric society where it is much more likely that the rape was not really a rape but simple infidelity instead. Of course, it backfires horribly in a more modern environment, but as long as that is partly hard-coded that might be part of the reason for why this attitude is harder to uproot than it should be.
@00Trademark00
@00Trademark00 7 жыл бұрын
If you had a bunch of men going around and raping women as their reproductive strategy, you'd have big shifts in the society in general. I would expect something like what you observe in lions. A group of lionesses essentially chooses one lion to both be the father of their cubs as well as help them protect the cubs from other lions (who otherwise kill all the cubs to make sure the cubs are theirs...very rarely do you see more than one male lion in a group and then those are usually siblings, which means they have some evolutionary interest to see the brother's cubs survive as well). This is what you'd probably see in this case. I don't know of any animals where something akin to rape is a common way of spreading genes, in one way or another the females tend to choose and sometimes (such as in humans) the males do so too. Some species are harem animals like the lions (or sea lions) but even there the position of the alpha male can be either indirectly seen as female choice (the strongest male wins) or in smarter species, it is at least in party literally a female choice. In chimp groups, the alpha female is often the "kingmaker", she has the influence over other females and their support can mean that an otherwise weaker (but more socially apt and nicer to the females, or simply good at 'politics') male can maintain the position of the alpha for a very long time even at a presence of another physically superiour male. The Frans de Wall's book "Chimpanzee politics" is a fascinating read about the topic. In the observed group, there was a long term alpha male who managed to keep his position and keep the youngsters out mostly because he was smarter and perhaps wiser than the young guys. essentially, he managed to pit one against the other while keeping very good relationships with the alpha female. Eventually he grew too old and the new alpha that emerged was really bad at the politics, was aggressive and would not actually protect the females from other males (which is also partly his job) who were sometimes aggressive (and sometimes it seemed that they were aggressive on purpose to create this divide between the alpha males and the females- one would attack the females while the other would keep the alpha male busy), eventually the females decided that enough is enough and helped another chimp to replace him.

I'm glad that my comment provided you with an opportunity for you to show off your female studies degree and write an essay on a book you've read recently. But you missed quite a simple point of human ancestors being different and how that difference influenced modern human to some extend on top of making a few questionable claims.

@UncleCloud: I'm not quite sure what your point is when you say that "human ancestors were different".

I just don't believe that behavior of an artificial chimpanzee group in artificial environment is an indication of behavior in ancient human collectives, or really an indication of anything. I don't see how it refutes my little theory based on males having a peculiar penis shape and females evolving into having a fake infertility signs at all times. While we're at it, you shouldn't spend time here writing long winded comments. You've got many lakes to visit and lots of conversation with female ducks to be had, explaining them how forceful procreation attempts shouldn't influence shape of their reproductive organs, and many small "don't blame the victim" signs to be handed out.
