I have locs because I’ve learned to love myself as a bw. I spent years going to the Dominican salon. Spending my money to keep up with a look that wasn’t me naturally. My husband came to me with a fade a low cut. And now his locs are well past his shoulders. My daughters locs are all the way near her buttocks. We’re proud of our locs. My daughter tells me everyday she’s so happy to look like me hair and all. I’m happy that I didn’t ever start straightening her hair. I could care less WHO has locs but I have mine for reasons such as self love and that’s a journey. Also for me locs are far from a point of vanity. It’s actually was a terrifying process to commit one’s self to the locs. And the phases of my locs sometimes were hard to look at but every phase was me. Naturally me.

No "dreads" are term used by Napoleon to describe Haitians who had locs. Napoleon and the French became dreadful or dreaded to see people with locs because they were able to defeat the world's strongest military. Even in the Bible the term is loc not dreadloc.....stop it. This is a hair style this a lifestyle. Are you or your white cousin. Bobo Ashanti, Rastafarian, Nyahbinghi, Kemites, Kushites, or Sumarian? If not you shouldn't have locs. Most locs don't allow members to have locs touched by people outside of the tribe. Some loc tribes won't allow their locs to be uncovered in public. And no loc tribe allows "tools of Babylon" Combs, brushes, dyes, rubber bands, etc to be used on their locs. Older tribes would behead you for this (shave your head).

When one of my friends with locs was at high school, she was always under the constant threat that she wouldn’t be able to write her exams unless she cuts her locs (Northen Academy I’m looking at you). And as recently as the past two years girls at Hoërskool Rob Ferreira still don’t have the freedom to keep locs without being called ‘untidy’. This happens a lot at certain schools in South Africa (some even sending girls with afros home) and one thing is for sure: Steve Biko didn’t die for this.

Many cultures throughout history have worn their hair in dreadlocks. Minoans, the Greeks, Germanic tribes, and nomadic Norse tribes are a few that come to mind that all used dreadlocks for cultural and spiritual reasons. My younger brother loved Bob Marley and became very interested in african culture after classes he took in school. When he died I went into a deep depression. That day I stopped cutting my hair. It started to loc itself but as time passed I felt like driving in and embracing my locs. They became a kind of tribute to him. The energy I had when he died is still physically in my hair. My locks represent my journey from losing my brother and not being able to get out of bed to where I am today. I am conscious of and understand why some black people might see me as appropriating their culture and all I can say is that my heart goes out to them and I can understand why they'd think I'm plucking this thing from their culture and ignoring the genocide, slavery and racism they and their ancestors have experienced. At the end of the day my locs are mine and I have them for my own reasons. I won't apologize for that but I'm open to having discussions about it. (I'm not directing this comment to anyone in specific even though you made the video lol)

I agree! I think locs are so beautiful, and as a white woman I did a lot of research before making my decision. I applaud those who make the commitment to loc their hair (whether it's a protective style or otherwise). While looking for ways to resist chopping all my hair off, I learned about synthetic locs and yarn locs. Personally, I use those methods because I have commitment issues (which I'm working on) and it's much healthier for my hair than dyeing it every few weeks...but it allows a different form of self-expression for me. I'm very curious to hear other people's reasons for growing locs!

I have seen a couple stories in the news of school officials cutting kids dreads because they violate the dress code… And I def do not agree with that… That’s not right… And if it were my child He would be withdrawn immediately and my attorney would have a field day…. That said… If equality and fair enforcement of rules really matter I don’t think that a dress code that clearly states boys can’t have hair past their collar should have racial exemptions…You can’t strictly apply the rule to non black students while allowing black students to have long hair… doesn’t matter if it’s dreads or braids if below the collar it’s too long… It’s the parents responsibility to be aware of things like this for your kid… holding a student and a parent to the same standard of accountability as everyone else is the opposite of racist…

Second thing is he never said others cant wear dreds. Third is the entire point of the video was not completely about dreds itself. We can even take race completely out of this and use another example. Some Christians wear the cross because it means something to them. Yet it would be wrong of me to assume that everybody wears the cross simply because it looks cool to them. The same can be said with certain tattoos. Certain tattoos mean something and some people get them because of that meaning while others get it simply because they like it. I started my loc journey almost 3 years ago when I turned 50. I admired them from the 1st time I saw them oh so long ago. I wanted to do the locs for several reasons, all of them very personal. I waited because of the gate keeping but when I seriously contemplated getting locs, I did a lot of searching on the internet. I learned about Rastafarianism, the history of locs in cultures and contemporary perspectives. I found a large divide in this subject. In the end, I did what was right for me and I will never give up my locs. I am grateful to whoever and wherever they come from and in my journey gained a deep respect for the Rastafarians. The one thing I did not expect to run into were white women asking me about my locs. No one has been rude, and it has given me an opportunity to dispel a lot of myths about locs.

Napoleon and the French became dreadful or dreaded to see people with locs because they were able to defeat the world's strongest military. Even in the Bible the term is loc not dreadloc.....stop it. This is a hair style this a lifestyle. Are you or your white cousin. Bobo Ashanti, Rastafarian, Nyahbinghi, Kemites, Kushites, or Sumarian? If not you shouldn't have locs. Most locs don't allow members to have locs touched by people outside of the tribe. Some loc tribes won't allow their locs to be uncovered in public. And no loc tribe allows "tools of Babylon" Combs, brushes, dyes, rubber bands, etc to be used on their locs. Older tribes would behead you for this (shave your head).

As a Jamaican, Rastafari originated here. Locs were and still are criminalized. Locs are a symbol of defiance, resistance to oppression and anti-colonialism. Many were murdered just for having them. I had locs for a while. My reason was not the same as a black person. My locs came from my hair matting naturally in my sleep, and as a German, I enjoyed that they happened naturally due to the existence of elf-locs in my culture. "In folklore, fairy-locks (or elflocks) are the result of fairies tangling and knotting the hairs of sleeping children and the manes of beasts as the fairies play in and out of their hair at night." That’s why it’s good to sun bathe to absorb the energy from the sun and cover your head when you are in public.

Culture can be studied. Culture can be adopted. It is the main reason for its existence, to be shared. And that's what magical about culture. Brown white red yellow who cares about your skin colour, we all share the same stuff. As a white Moroccan I know for a fact about the spirituality behind dreadlocks, we've got brown people in Morocco as well as white people and other colours as well, we have 3 religions mostly Islam and Christianity/Judaism but we all share the same Moroccan culture. If I see idk someone from South Africa wearing dreadlocks and traditional moroccan jellaba and singing "Hallelujah" I wouldn't feel offended. They liked a part of my tradition, mixed it with their tradition, and it's all fine.

The real reason I have locks is because after 16 years of having white barber refuse to learn black hair, I gave up. Stopped combing my fro. Dealt with years of bullying for my "nappy" hair. Then years later, after my natural dreads occurred, it became a trend and those same white folks are now grabbing without consent in admiration. It's bonkers.
