Hi ShortCircuiters and NIU fans, We appreciate the feedback, both positive and critical. We have been making e-mopeds for years and the smart app is a key feature for many of our riders. The version of the NIU app that supports the KQi3 is still in beta, so we will continue to improve the experience for our users. The reason we require the app to unlock the full speed and performance of the scooter is to ensure the safety of new users who may be unfamiliar with e-scooters. We want to make sure they complete the tutorial before they go out on the road with no experience or familiarity with the functions of the scooter. We also have the utmost respect for your data privacy; the app data connections are to ensure the functions of the scooter and app work properly together for ride stats. Just as with the app, the KQi3 featured in the video is an early version and may differ from the final product. We will continue to improve based on our user feedback, as always. Thank you! -- The NIU Team

Why is there an online requirement at all? Nothing about what you just said couldn't be handled entirely locally on the owner's device. Nor does it seem to compensate for how intrusive and prone to failure a mandatory phone connection is. If your phone runs out of battery when you're out, that should not jeopardise your ability to get home. And that's not even addressing the security risks that come with having a vehicle thats core functionality can be accessed via Blutooth. Stick to user manuals, leave risk assessment up to the owner and enforcement of safe driving practice up to law enforcement. Once you've sold it, it's not yours anymore and you have no right to retain control over it.
@niumobility3 жыл бұрын
@@LordSoulSicarious Hi Sean. To clarify, the scooter still operates normally without a connection to the phone. There is no need for an "always on" connection, except to provide detailed ride statistics through the app. The app is needed to complete the new user tutorial, but other than that, it's only necessary for the smart features like locking, ride stats, and custom riding mode.

Lol... I don't normally watch ShortCircuit, but Riley referred to this video after he reviewed a Lectric bike. Well I can't say much about NIU Scooters because it's max weight is a mere 264lbs and the biggest joke here is there is no way to chain the thing up. They give a locking mode, but so what. It's so light (40lbs), the thief could simply walk away with it and it's not like the faint beeping would attract much attention. My scooter is the Arwibon Q30 a single rear 48v, 2500W motor electric scooter which weighs in at 78lbs. Not easily carried away. It has a max user weight of 200Kg (440lbs) and even at max weight it can still do 25° - 30° grades. Oh and FYI... as of July 21, 2021 Vancouver allows eScooters, but they follow the eBike specifications, no higher than 500W and they limit speeds to 24kph and must wear a helmet and have lights if riding between sunset and sun rise. This video was release July 10, 2021 - so just 11 days too early. Here in Toronto, eScooters also follow the eBike laws. Same sort of restriction where I live in Ontario. It's the main reason why I've never bothered to get an electric bike, board, or scooter. I can live with the up-front cost, but fully automated electric devices like this are heavily restricted in where you can use it, and those that only offer assist, I don't have much use for. They're basically treated like vehicles (that you don't need a license to drive), which I guess they sort of are, as regular bikes technically are as well and you can in fact ride those on the road, but I wouldn't feel all that safe trying to use these sorts of vehicles on the road among cars (and I'm super sure I'd be popular if I did /s), and if the sidewalk is a non-option (at least legally), I just feel like giving up on the venture entirely. Also, basically forcing us to use them on the road like cars while at the same time the government forces artificial speed limits on them is just asinine. "You can basically only use these on the roads among the cars, but we sure won't let you use them at speeds that make sense under those circumstances." Either they should let us use them at full speed or let us use them on sidewalks. Preferably both.

For the people ragging about the app, there are some countries where the maximum speed of the scooters is limited. The app is a way to make a global version of it and sell it without having to limit it according to every country. You use apps for the wearables... there are scooters like this that go up to 45-50 km/h, but here in Denmark they require a motorcycle license because they go faster than 30 km/h, and you must have a license plate and drive on the road. So scooters here effectively have to be capped at 30 km/h so you can use them without a license (as long as you're over 18) and can drive on the bicycle path. With most electric scooters, you only need the app to unlock speeds, set cruise levels, etc. You don't need to use it every time. That said, my scooter (the Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost) doesn't have a feature in the app to lock it to prevent (or at least discourage) theft, and I REALLY wish it did. On mine, I managed to get creative with a Kryptonite lock at the fold point, with a chain wrapped around it multiple times, for locking it up. For heavier riders, beware the low weight limits on many electric scooters. On this one and most of them, the limit is 220 pounds. The Swagger's limit is 320 pounds , which is one of the highest I've found for a low price ($300) scooter.

This chinese company you’ve never heard of is actually one of the biggest manufacturers of electric scooters (real sized ones that you sit on) and you can barely go more than a mile in a european city without seeing one of their scooters. They are also being used by a lot of scooter sharing companies and can generally be considered marked leader for electric scooters.

QUESTION: What if you 'ride away' from the App, as in you leave your phone with Jono or someone intentionally, does it shut down and lock or does the extra speed go away and it goes slower? Do you have to keep the phone in your pocket? Obviously no one will do that normally, but think about it this way; can you leave your phone at the repair store and ride away? What if the phone battery dies on you? How does that affect the scooter? Or if the scooter is stolen from behind you before you notice, can you shut it down via the App?

Ha! I was right about that poll a few days/week ago to who was going to host it. 😎 Also I agree with Taran, if it needs an App to RUN your transportation device then screw that. At the same time that "anti theft" break lock is fine but what keep people from folding it and carrying it? Motion sensor and the weird chimes might be a good deterrent but if someone is determine to snatch it for parts, then that thing is gone. Maybe GPS tracking build in?

@@RisingRevengeance Your data, potentially sold to one person, is pennies. Sell data from lots of people to lots of other people, and I can imagine that piles up rather quickly.

try out Rita Personal Data to see what you're worth to google for example. i was worth $500 - i use adblockers everywhere, location data is kept off unless i need it... my friend was worth $50,000 to ad companies cause he clicks on ads...

I remember when skateboarding was at its highest point in around 2008-2012 (in LA at least) taking a scooter to school was cringey, even just walking with one. It was like riding a skateboard was a hobby and lifestyle cause of the trend (but low key transport), while scooter screamed "I have no ride and need to go home quick cause I have no alternate hobbies or friends to hang with and did I mention I don't have a bike or can't skateboard" lol, didn't help if it was a off-brand scooter cause now you can add in addition that you were broke lol. I never minded scooters though, but peer pressure pushed me away from being seen on one, its crazy how now that skateboarding died down a bit (though recently I've seen some younger kids skating) its cool to scooter again. I think the rental scooters helped kill that, but I still kinda chuckle cause its kinda like when you a segway, like its people who you know for a fact if they fall off are going to have a bad day lol or I guess think of it like seeing Cathy Mitchell trying to do a Tre-Flip lol While skateboarders fall all the time, god forbid a pebble the size of fly hits the wheel XD

the laws state you can only ride it on private property as it is counted as a motorized vehicle. only ebikes are allowed but they must have pedals.

There are tons of places where there are no bike lanes, though? A bicycle can ride on the road, or if you're going slower you can probably get away with the sidewalk.
@UFODave693 жыл бұрын
in many NA cities, bike lanes aren't nearly as ubiquitous as they should be. Not to mention, sometimes even when they do exist, they're poorly designed and are borderline more dangerous than just sharing the road.

Niu is one of the biggest premium e bike makers in china. So the quality is not a problem. Also the crowd funding will go smoothly no matter what since they have a lot of funding anyway. 700 bucks is a big ask tho. Its competitors has similar offerings for about 300-400 range.

I feel like this is designed for UK markets, not that they're legal here, but there are ones that you can legally hire and they require GPS (though it's built in) because they slow down in parks and such and speed up on roads. I guess this is why it requires the app
