Update: a few people saying I should just let the bass do the talking - That is what I prefer to do. Sadly there are many people who don’t let my bass do the talking (many of those reasons are mentioned in the video), so my voice has to - so I made this video as it’s something that is barely spoken about, but deserves to be. :) Hi everyone! Thank you so much for your kind comments, they really do mean the world and I’m glad you have you around :) - Just to clarify, as I know a few people are (understandably) worried thinking I’m just doing this video because I’m reacting to negative comments… I made this video because I know I’m not the only person who gets this. It’s become such a huge, unspoken problem, and I wanted to highlight that, and hopefully make anyone else who gets this feel heard. I rarely feel the need to explain myself, in my opinion the right people will get it, and those are the ones you need. I am a big believer in ‘no reaction is the best reaction’, but sometimes things need to be spoken about out loud for a myriad of reasons :)

Why are you so chill and honest? It frustrates small-minded individuals. If you were a painter the internet would tell you what colors, textures, brushes, and shapes to use; though doing so would sanitize the art out of the artistry. Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds is a masterpiece. The ominous bassline in Horsell Common and the Heat Ray is badass and scary at the same time. In fact I'm reading the novel for the seventh time since that album had such an impact on me as a child. I also totally get your approach to the bass being more than just "the bass". I've done recordings in the past where it's literally just a drum machine and heavily distorted bass guitar. I still play like that now. The John Paul Jones debut album "Zooma" is well worth looking into for a similar vibe if you haven't already. And about the clothing / hair thing, don't worry, I've had similar questions about my chains I like to wear and when I dyed my hair blue. Gave certain colleagues a shock but that's their problem. Stay being you Cici. There's no one else worth trying to be.

I came here from a post shared on another social media site profile (Lisa Lee Curtis). I hadn't heard your music, or read any of the comments of which you speak, but the fact that people are giving you $h!t for ANY of this stuff is infuriating. When you are a sensitive artist-type, the words of others can especially sting, because your soul is beautiful and idealistic, and you want to recognize the potential of and good in all people, and so it is difficult to realize that some people ARE actually piles of garbage and can be ignored without a second thought. Anyway, I have checked out your music and you have a new fan. Alchemy is making something good out of bad. The attention brought by haters results in more attention from the opposite of haters. Thank you for putting yourself out there and sharing your talent with us.

I love the way people say "Why don't you play normally" when it comes to music. First, define "Normal". Second, no one batted an eye lid when Peter Hook played high up the neck, when Lemmy cranked his volume and hit power chords, when Chris Wolstenholme showing up with that weird Kitara double neck bass, or even when my bass hero Peter Steele saturated his sound with boatloads of chorus and delay to make his bass sound almost metallic. When someone famous does something outside normal, we all think its wonderful. When us normal people do it, we get lampooned for doing it wrong. You have a brilliant sound, you can play fantastic, you don't need to justify yourself.

Some people just like to complain! I went to see Victor Wooten and a guy i was with spent the whole journey home complaining about how "he's not a proper bass player" because he kept taking lead parts, he needs to "respect the role of bassist" (it was his band, his music, there is a reason 1500 people came to see him and it wasn't a night of root notes). Victor probably got a pass on his appearance because he's male. I came here because I kept seeing you pop up on Facebook groups. Love the videos, I'm going to go and binge watch the rest while I solder cables for my pedalboard.

What a great response video. For my twopenneth worth; love that you point out people have a choice to watch, I enjoy most of your work but some isn't my style or taste, so what. No one wants a boring show, on-stage you're a Rock Star and the Trio is better for your energy and style. Don't turn into Bill Wyman, that style has been done and dusted. Those that trade on their looks will have a short shelf life, looks fade but talent is forever. Great music doesn't come in boxes, keep pushing the boundaries of your sound. Experiment and innovate with your instrument, keep moving forward. Just keep on being authentic and do what makes you happy. You can't please everyone, those that enjoy your work will always be there for you, those that don't will move on. Now to be controversial, don't let personal loyalty hold you back, you could be so much more than playing pubs with the Trio. Grab any opportunities that come along and become the Star you deserve to be. Be yourself, keep rocking, be happy.

It’s so cool to see another bassist try and take the instrument to a different place. When I first started to get pedals and whatnot, my friends said that I should focus on playing the bass as it’s own instrument and not trying to play it like a guitar (I play chords on my bass)

I have heard it said that how someone responds (or reacts) to another is a reflection of the person reacting, not the one doing whatever they are doing. Some of these comments you've been getting prove that. I love your covers, your improvs and your nailing bassline after bassline. Your textures are rad and if that takes a few pedals, more power to you! I just think about players like Justin Chancellor or Tony Levin and how poor the world would be if they just stayed inside of another's silly little box of preconceived ideas of what a bass player is supposed to do. You are super unique, and your style and feel and presentation are all perfect, just the way you are. Keep rockin' girl! 🤘

That'w why I'm your fan, because I'm a bassist and musician too, there's nothing better than following musicians that express themselves just the way they are.

Man, there are so many closed-minded people out there! I don't understand why these people need to put content creators in a box. I love what you're doing, and I love the energy you bring to it all. Keep up the great work!!

It's normal that every musician play by own style. You play what you feel, what you want. And you create your music from your heart, soul and mind. Songwriting is something supernatural. Music is universal. Great video. Have a good weekend! 🎸⭐🎸

Hey CiCi I’m 61 been playing bass for too long here in Chicago and I must say I truly adore you! Your honesty and just wonderful playing makes me proud, proud that this young Lady is kicking ass on bass. Hiding behind keyboard s Dear Never explain yourself again, I find your videos quite nice and informative. In the States here there is a giant hate movement, they probably hate bassist also. Sweet, kind, humble, funny and an excellent player, in 23 there aren’t girls playing, guys playing bass, we are the Bassist community who support each other at all costs. God Bless CiCi! Proud of you! Go get em!!!!! Jim Wish I had hair to color!

I was inspired so inspired as a 7 year old by Eric Serra’s score in the movie The Fifth Element. It’s almost post-cyber punk and the movie reflected the silliness and fun but also the eeriness and internal feelings of anxiety, bliss, beauty, and sorrow. The Fifth Element will always hold a place because when I watched it at a young age I shouldn’t have it gave me a feeling and I didn’t know why…The music; anyway, I’m a bass player too and I know what you mean about making atmospheric music 😊

For my part, I'm glad you play bass the way you do. My #1 instrument is a 6 string bass (in part for the range, and in part because I am an old man with fucked up hands and it helps me not have to shift around as much) which has a lot more capability than just playing 8th note roots on a 4/4 pattern. So when I'm not doing a bass line, I like to fuck around with the bass and my pedals and find out what I can make it do. It's great fun.

I think that it's sad that you felt the need to make this video, there's way too much prejudice and misogyny in the world, but I get why you did. To me (and I know, many others!), it's obvious that the music is the core of it. You always come across as totally dedicated and genuine, letting your muse flow through you and grooving with it. I also get the "lost in music/moving" bit. Bandmates have commented to me about being in "Bruceworld" when I play - connected to them through the music, but also somewhat elsewhere. I long ago ceased to care too much about what people say/think about me - at least when it’s things that are solely down to me. You definitely bring something fresh musically too. I enjoy your use of effects, and your love of the "stoorie end" of the fretboard! I am primarily a guitarist of sorts, but I have always loved the tonality of the upper reaches of the bass' range - it has something unique to it - although you are playing notes that are well within the range of the guitar, the timbre and sonics of it are different and fascinating. Keep grooving your own way Cici, and bring us the music that you find along the way!

There's a terrific Victor Wooten video somewhere on KZbin, of him talking to a crowd outdoors (clearly some kind of clinic), with Michael League beside him (in fact, Wooten plays League's P-Bass at points), the theme being about playing bass and making music. Your take on things, Cici, resonates *strongly* with his - two wise and accomplished bass players, MUSICIANS, with a similar approach to their instrument. What a thought!!!!

If your explanation about anything is a way of sharing, of letting us know you better, then👍. If, on the other hand, is because someone just doesn't stop bugging you with questions, then I suggest a different finger... In my case, I thank you for sharing. I like to know more about interesting people!

It's called individualism and everyone should embrace it. Stumbled on this recognising your face from Dave's videos which I watch all the time. Great video, I live in Skegness but was born and lived in Louth up until 3 gears ago. Hopefully get to see the band soon. Great video 👍👍👍

Thanks for the video Cici. I think what I find unpalatable about the whole thing is that society had devolved into this cesspool of people commenting nonsense for the sake of commenting nonsense. Your videos have always felt genuine and the fact that whether it be on your videos, or as you have commented just about the situation content creators face regularly, that it’s a travesty that people react this way. I’ve always been of the mind that if you don’t like something just move on to the next thing don’t try to change that thing into what your vision of it is. Just not for you and keep moving until you find something you do enjoy. Cheers from the US. Keep doing you!

I agree with what some of the others have said, You should be able to play the kind of music you like, the way you like without having to justify yourself to anyone, but yourself. Yes, your sound is unique, but I like unique. Thank you for your music and for being you! Keep rocking and keep doing it your way!!
