Hey Uncle Adam, just wanted to stop by and say thanks for these vids of yours. My old gaming group used to do that. We'd be playing a lot of one game (40K, mostly) and then one guy would start talking about, say, Bolt Action. Both games were fun. Then we'd move from Bolt Action to DBA or some other Historical game... and I'm looking at my 40K armies that I don't have time to finish now because I have an army of Celts I need to purchase and paint. Celts come in, I start painting, and whoops, now we're playing Mordheim and I don't have a single fantasy model in my collection to play with. I want to be very, very clear here: I am not knocking any of these games in the least. So, I would ask, "Um, guys, can we play 40K?" as it was the game I had the most models for, and the most time invested in, and I really, really wanted to finish those armies up and spend time on that one game. The game I have so much time, and money invested in. Good grief, you'd think I had butchered a puppy in the living room by the reactions I got. At best it was, "Nah, I don't feel like it right now." which is fine, you feel like playing what you feel like playing. Some of it was, "I don't ever want to play that stupid game again now that I've found [Insert Best New Game Ever]." Or, even, "Ugh, you still have those models? Nobody plays that." I get wanting to play other things. I am an admitted Games Workshop gamer; I've got historical interests and I'd love to play some other games but that's what I'm invested in. Those are the models I have, the armies I've built, the armies I'm painting. I play a little Necromunda and I play a little Bloodbowl because those are side games that don't take very much to get started with. So, while I do very much get wanting to play other things, one should also actually ask their friends what they'd be interested in doing, rather than just grabbing any game off the wall and expecting everyone to be down with it. Typically, enough will be to throw the group into disarray. I don't play with those people any more, and I'm very much better off for it. The point still stands that communication is the key to any relationship, and that includes friendship. Talk about it before just deciding it. Hear your friend out if they don't want to do what you want to do. If you and your group do decide to try something new, STICK WITH IT for a while! Just be a good friend.

As someone who was feeling overwhelmed by the amount of of games and project's on hand, this mindset actually helps quite a bit. Maybe I'll never get around to playing 40K (what with the popular AoS scene here locally) but what's the harm in working towards having 40K on the go? Cheers!

I have a variety of friends who play different systems and I like to keep it fresh and as I am so disciplined I get the painting side done too. I am used to painting large units due to playing Soviets in WW2 so can easily paint 20-30 minis at a time.

Great video as always Adam. I find in my gaming group the folks that play games like AOS or 40K tend to really dedicate their time to just playing only one game however they jump from army to army to keep their interest up. Super relatable. I used to just collect a few Rotbringer minis to use as homebrew plague-stricken knight monsters/NPCs for my D&D games, but it eventually led me to start a full Nurgle army for AoS (I'm clocking in at around 2300 points now). I even use my Malifaux Arcanists crew as NPCs for D&D, to the point where I've written backstories for Rasputina's December Acolytes.

If you stick to the same scale, you can oftentimes use the same terrain for multiple games. Not using American Civil War with Necromunda, but most of it could be used for other games like I do: Middle Earth SBG is mostly compatible.

I have prob far too many games systems but as I can't guarantee when I can get into my club due to family having my bag with 5+ games systems in there so can usually jump into one game or another. I can traverse between each game system with relative ease and means I can play without too many issues. Plus having several systems helps for me for when I get gamer modeling block so having lots of projects and games systems really helps.

I personally just cant keep painting same thing over and over again. Maby thats why i play Infinity, Runewars, Wh40, Legion and now Shadespire joined that group abd also x wing if i just want to play. I found out that i have gaming periods: Like this month or two i want to play infinity and i play it exclusivly but then i domt touch it for another few months and focus on another game and this way i have time for all of those systems. By circling around them and focusing on one of them at a time for some time and then changing again. Also those titles are vastly diffrent in terms of model types. For example my runewars army is typical fantasy skeletons (and nit typical worm riding skeltons) inspired by warcraft 3 (the scultps i mean) but Infinity on the other hand is highly advanced tech cyberpunk or wh40 is just more heavy grimmdark models. By circling those in painting i wont get bored like in for example painting a huge army of dark eldars.

What i like about it is not only the different rules and play style and Lore but Also the different ways of paiting, (mass painting 6mm compared to a character on a throne (yes i play dwarfs)) avalible time to play, (from 1 hour KoW to 6 hour baroque) the different visual aspects of the game (steampunk vs roman legion) and foremost that you get to meet and play a larger group of people when you play Alot of different games not just your 3-4 best buddies Playing the one game you are playing.

If you're looking for a good skirmish game, I'd highly recommend 7TV2, the Game of Inch High Spy-Fi, from Crooked Dice. It's a nice relaxed sort of game that it's very difficult to be over competitive with. Hey. Did you try Frostgrave in 15mm scale? Im waiting for Times of Legends the board game and miniatures may fit perfectly. You have human armies but also monsters and the best of all 15mm terrain like new or destroyed buildings, trees or even lifestock. People say that BOLT Action plays great in 15mm and thats why I'm getting Fow stuff to play BOLT, so Frostgrave should work too.

Games like Blood Bowl and Guild Ball are great little games that use miniatures so if fantasy american football is your thing then why not try out either one of those depending on which one has players on your area.
@SciFiPorkChop286 жыл бұрын
That is probably the other issue (pro & con) of trying out a lot of different games... the good side is you might find people to play with that you didn't know.. or get someone into a game that they wouldn't have tried otherwise.. the bad side is that you are competing with other game to get people to play and you might really love a game (for example Guild Ball) but everyone in your area is playing Blood Bowl instead... and if they don't have your love of gaming ADHD, it can be hard to get your local meta moving... although I guess, you could always start playing Blood Bowl instead!

The only game I refuse to get involved with is Infinity. Not because it's bad. Quite the opposite. It's an amazing system. But to me, it's a "jealous partner game." You can't cheat on it with other games if you want to play well and win. When I need a break to recharge (like recently), I bust out THQ's (Now Sega) Space Marine. That game is awesome. I get to be a Space Marine and kill orks to my heart's delight. I get a 40K fix via mostly brainless play. Then I roll back onto 40K or AoS or Shadespire or whatevs feeling refreshed. Another way to "recharge your hobby batteries" is to find a local Con and spend a day there. I'm always motivated and more productive after a good Con. Especially if I run into good folks like Uncle Atom or That Girl Teri.

I like the more optimistic view on the gamer ADHD... that said, I know for me, I have to reign in the spread of games and models... Yes, the idea that I can use a lot of my toys in different games and be able to play a wide range of games with a wide range of players is great... but I think I am hitting the wall as far as time to devote to each game and also have to worry about cost. So, for me, for the rest of 2018, I think it is going to be continuing to try to focus on 3 or 4 games that I know I like, and resisting the temptation to try all the games and all the factions... fingers crossed!
