The way I see it, is that the money I have earned is a representation of the time I have spent earning it. So the money i saved holds great value to me in the way that time holds great value to me. So whenever I buy something I convert it back in to time and determine that way, if it is worth the price. For example a product of around 60 euro's (70dollars) would be about around 7 hours of work (minimumwage (nl) example (not my actual wage)). Then I ask myself if I would be willing to work that amount of time for said product. I think minimum wage is great way to determin "worth" of something according to society.

Almost everything I own is second hand or bought used. I choose to spend my money on high quality food for my health. I'm surviving on less than $20k/year in Hawaii and I still am able to save and contribute to my Roth IRA. You are absolutely right when you said it simply takes a shift in financial thinking, which is easier aid than done for a lot of people apparently.
@patriciafisher31086 жыл бұрын
I am impressed that you are able to live on that amount of money plus save in Hawaii. Good for you. ( : I understand the cost of living there is very high. Buying used is the way to go. I do this also, but not 100%. I would say 80%. I buy my shoes, and bedsheets new. You are wise to choose to spend your money on high quality food.

A better question would be " Why Do You Invest So Much?" 😉 there's nothing wrong with saving your money though at least then you don't have to worry about an emergency day by taking out loans or anything like most people.
@se7enzee4446 жыл бұрын
It's a problem if one is too frugal. While saving $$$, one is not living/enjoying life. Nobody can tell but we can be gone the next day.
@BeatTheBush6 жыл бұрын
You have to take a step back and ask yourself why you are buying certain things and how it affects your life long term. 'Enjoying life' might not be indulging in all the things you currently think is how you enjoy life.
@mia-pham6 жыл бұрын
Everyone needs to develop their own answer to "why", which will keep them motivated while they're pursuing their own financial or life goals, but for many on the FIER path (or have already achieved FIRE), myself included, our "why" is to achieve financial freedom. I don't want to wait until I'm 65 to start living life on my terms (unfortunately, many people don't have any plans for retirement and will likely be working well beyond 65). Yes, you can be gone tomorrow, but the chances of that happening are very low. The average life expectancy for a person living in the U.S. is 78.7 years. Statistically speaking, you are more likely to suffer from a disability than to die prematurely (which is all the more reason why you should be having a high savings rate). You can be frugal, saving money, AND enjoying life. They are not mutually exclusive.

I shop like every three years. I’ve never even owned a pair of Jordan’s for. Many find this weird! LOL..!! Friends and family are forever asking me, with all the money that I save, why don’t I travel more. It’s really not what I’m into. Doesn’t matter to me. I even still have an iPhone 6s Plus, that I purchased a year after its release. I bought it from eBay for a great price. Folks often mention, “Well you can’t take it with you!” My reply, “Yet I can leave it as part of my legacy.”

Not trying to pressure you into updating your kitchen but I think it would be fun to watch videos of you DIY updating your kitchen while spending very little on it! I'm thinking about repainting my kitchen cabinets but haven't reached early retirement yet so there's no time on my hands at the moment haha

What matters more is my health. After I have that set then I'll think about it. The look of a kitchen matters little to me.

GOOD TOOLS- a reasonably price quality mechanical tool I've recently found is Tekton Tools ( i have no affiliation,just like tools). They are sold online only, I believe. They have a great warranty where you send them a pic of the broken tool and they send you a new one. They are made in Taiwan which I find vastly better in quality and precision than Chinese made tools. Best deal around. A lot of Kobalt tools are made in Taiwan and better than Husky but try to make a warranty claim on a single wrench from a set. The store gets very confused.

I record my videos with a $40 used logitech, $60 used blue yeti mic, and a few extra things to support it with some $10 video editing software. I don't think people care too much on quality of video as long as the content is not bad. I would never notice if you went 4k.
@BeatTheBush6 жыл бұрын
Ha ha... it actually IS 4k right now mostly. It's in prep for things to come. Right now it is not needed because I'm just talking on my couch.

Going to the movies seems so antiquated to me now. True, I don’t have family or friends to go with anymore. But, I actually have a lot more pleasure in being able to watch movies with my 2 cats, who will actually watch just about anything, in quietude, without me telling someone to be quiet. I’m not spending on popcorn, pooped in some weird tasting oil. If I want to spend, I can order in from any restaurant. I also have a rather small TV in the bedroom, until I re-hookup my old 30” Apple Cinema Display and I have 2 of those, which is good enough for me. But, the peace, quiet and not having to go to a theatre, just to tell someone what you saw, when you’re at work on Monday? I don’t think anyone does that anymore.

I keep hearing arguments that 4K resolution isn't worth the money because unless you are watching on a big big tv, you cannot see the difference. keep these awesome videos coming!
@BeatTheBush6 жыл бұрын
Yup. Rule of thumb is you need to be sitting less than 1.5x the diagonal of the screen to start to see the difference. Optimal is about 1x the size of the screen. For normal viewing distance of 6-8', I means you should get 75" or larger if you want to see 4k quality.

Agree 100%,. We have always been brain washed by our capitalist society to keep on spending and buying more stuff. Most holidays, if not all, are "designed" for people to feel obligated to go out and spend. Glad we get this fresh breath of air from you and bring back some sanity for us all.
