Seth, I absolutely love this channel!! About the question, I think it's true, one of the reasons to travel IS to show off! And to see different things, of course... I've just started traveling as my husband retired last year (after traveling at times internationally for work, usually not to the safest places). We went to Australia this summer to pick up our kid from her summer abroad and did a lot of hiking- Blue Mountains, Kakadu, Daintree. Two years prior we went to Copenhagen, to pick up our other kid from his semester abroad. I'm intrigued by the different natural worlds and cultures. Not so much a city person. Late to your channel as I just saw your NYT article on serendipity, which I totally agree with. Can't imagine being tied down by a tour groupl

I liked Episode 1! I've traveled to see U2 in places I've never been before! I was in Barcelona in 2009 for the opening of its World Tour. In 2017, I traveled to Vancouver, Berlin and Rome. This year Lisbon. I'm a native New Yorker and am spoiled because every band comes through here but it's quite something to see a favorite band in different places around the world. I saw performances last year at a couple of Olympic Stadia - wow! These recent travels have confirmed this for me: music is a universal language.
@globallycurious91516 жыл бұрын
Tisha, fantastic point. In fact, it's something I often tell people: travel for a specific passion, and use that as a way to see lots of places. I'd bet that everywhere you go, the city is full of U2 fans and it's easy to meet people with similar interests. This is a great idea for an episode. Send me an email at seth@globallycurious.travel and tell me more if you get a chance.

Hi Seth! I'am already subscribed to Amigo Gringo, and I really love this new project! I have never beeen abroad, but I was always really interested in this kind of discussions. I think I travel to see new environments, to appreciate different works of art (I have a master degree in Philosophy of Art), to learn about new cultures (even in Brazil you can travel to a different state and it feels like you are in another country, as you may know) and, of course, to eat a lot of different and delicious stuff! But this is a very hard question indeed, because the answer often mixes psicological, historical and economical reasons (traveling, of course, is a (very) profitable bussiness), which we are not always aware of. It strikes me, for exemple, that one of the cities the brasilians visit the most is Miami, that we see as shopping piradise, when you have a lot of (in my opinion) more interesting and cheaper cities to travel here in Latin America. I've never understood this, I think as an american you may help me: Is Miami that interesting?
@fcastroaai6 жыл бұрын
I’ve been an Amigo Gringo follower ever since the beginning, but never posted any comment. Now I am going to New York and all your tips will be really useful - looking forward to the bagels and stuff. Anyway, I am here to say that I travel for the different. Different ways, different languages, different food, different beer, different products on the shelves, even different cars and licence plates. I hate when people back home say “that’s how it is” or “that’s our reality”, because it could all be different. The showing off part of it is to tell them that.

I travel for a lot of reasons. Sometimes just to meet family and friends. But also to know new places, learn the history, try the food and see the historical sites. I love Architecture and Museums, and I always visit at least one of each in every city that I go. I hate packing and airplanes. I hate drive for long distances too. Buses are boring, but sometimes are the only way. I would travel only by train if it was possible.
@globallycurious91516 жыл бұрын
Ane, so true. Trains are so great. One thing that frustrates me so much now is that in Europe, where the trains are so good, there are now flights that are cheaper. So you have to decide between spending less money and having a nicer trip.

I travel because I'd like to see with my own eyes the things we are exposed to by the television, books and movies for years... I like to see what's really real and what is not. I travel to learn more about the world and the humanity in general, too, to see what's different and what is very much alike between cultures. I think this channel will be specially great in times like now where there's this new type of show-off travel in which you go to a whole other country just to take pictures of the major attractions, but then do the same things you would do in your own country, eat in the same places, buy in the same stores, etc. Vai, Seth!! :)

It’s so great to see you on this new channel about ways of thinking about travel! Good lucky, gringo friend! Please feel free for correcting my english! The mainly reason to me for picking up a destination when I’m on vacation is to get close to nature and to contemplate how wonderful is it (the sea, mountains, dunes, caves, the animals and the plants, etc…). The other reasons are to savor new tastes, to meet other people, to share good time with family or friends, and to reenergize and get rid of the problems of the daily life.

@marcelohenriqueconte29386 жыл бұрын
The main reason I like to travel is to absorb the culture I am visiting somehow. I'm not that kind of person who likes to travel just to take selfies full of landscapes on the background. I guess Photoshop or even a big picture on the background could do that. I like to spend at least 1 month where I am heading to. This is why I don't enjoy going to many places at once. The surprise factor is very important though. I think we get exposed to so many things that we wouldn't while we could be comfortably safe in our own house. We NEED to face a different reality, different way of living. We cannot be 100% ourselves because we have to respect the culture and environment we are in, and THAT is what makes us grow. On the other hand, to talk about trips can make many people feel jealous and treat you bad because of that. For this reason I believe it is better to avoid telling those stories to these type of "friends". And yes, it is so good to meet people who like to travel, it's another mindset. Some like to know other cultures by books, pictures, videos, without stepping away from their home countries, that is also possible, but nothing is the same as to live and experience those places. When we travel we start to look to our own culture with the eyes of a foreigner and it is also another great way of learning and becoming a better person. We have elements to compare and rethink our standards, and that is PRICELESS.

Hey Seth. Good question! Actually it’s a wonderfull question that I never thought about, I just love traveling! But... trying to answer you, I thought some good reasons to me. First, maybe sounds sad, but it isn’t, I feel that I’m more myself (this sounds weird in English, so “Eu me sinto eu mesma”), because I’m so shy and when I’m travelling I care less with what people think, that maybe I feel more confortable. Second, and that one is clichê but also it’s true, I feel alive, in our daily rotine we have so much obligations that when I’m traveling I experience freedon to do what ever I want. Third, I love knowing people, cultures, discovere how diferentes and equals we, human beings, are. That one is amazing! There are a lot of others reasons that I just remember, but the fourth just to finesh, for knowledge na memories. Abraço Késsya Marques
