Thanks for the excellent conversation. To add to your comments, I feel that creating and working on a tree is like making a new friend then maintaining that friendship.

This is only stuff I've picked up watching KZbin so, pinch of salt... some people get stuck in daily survival rather than making long term plans, this often happens after unmanaged trauma. Horses, dogs, trees, so animal and tree care, give people the ability to 1: as you mentioned- be in the moment, focused, untroubled by the usual turmoil. 2: more importantly, it gives people the ability to look to tomorrow with hope, as they have a long term project they are invested in. 3: a sense of responsibility, to be needed by a tree or an animal is incredibly valuable to the human soul ❤ all this helps the mind break away from daily survival and helps people flourish in a more healthy way: with tomorrow in mind Merry Christmas Peter and all the team 🙏

I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation between you two gentlemen, of different perspectives and different reasons for the love of Bonsai. One aspect that I often don’t hear people discuss about Bonsai is the aspect of dependency. As with pets, or even children, Bonsai depends upon us for their well-being, survival, maintenance and flourishing. Having something that depends upon you for its flourishing, breathes life into you, and lights the desire for one to provide the best care for them to ensure the best future!

I would add that at the core of our humanity is an incredible amount of creativity that bonsai lends so very well to. The creative possibilities are astronomical which seems so appropriate coming from ‘stardust’ beings.

I adore my tiny trees for many of the reasons you mentioned (also, im fascinated with the variety of species and bonsai allows me to collect lots of trees without a ton of space) Also, I think this conversation could apply to any art form.

Yes, I loved how he said it's an art that never stops. You always create a bonsai piece. And I guess the tree also creates a bonsai piece with you.

"Every block of stone has a statue inside, and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it." "I saw the angel in the marble, and carved until I set it free." I'd say y'all hit the nail on the head with the idea of bonsai as a living sculpture. The most satisfying part of bonsai for myself is the point where all dead/leggy fullage has been removed and the tree can communicate it's aesthetic. Seeing the potential in the mess and listening to the life of the tree through the observations of growth and movement. It's a beautiful connection.

Miniature depictions of iconic landmarks fascinate people. Entire parks are built on this theme. I think this is also a similar element in Bonsai that people enjoy.

Good to listen to you both talking bonsai, going deeper into the art form, I found it interesting that you both approach bonsai from different angles one gets the most enjoyment from the continual caring of the trees and one gets the most pleasure from the art of creating the bonsai and has little interest in the continual upkeep of the bonsai once it is finished. Thank you Peter, Happy Christmas to you all at Herons and a successful 2025.

I have a "miniature world" of rocks and trees in the garden (so no root pruning) and i can lose myself in it. It's a lot of work and my wife says whenever she sees me there i'm just looking at it! How else can i plant a wood in a small garden? Had to move it all when we changed location but as you can imagine that was a pleasure to reorganise, and is now twice the acreage it was! Gardening is so therapootick and bonsai means almost anyone can have a mini world to visit! Thanks for doing these lovely films

I think a large part of the fascination with bonsai is ignorance, the not-knowing of the process and care. People also assume there's a very large mystical and cultural aspect to the art I think because you rarely see masters of this in the west, though we're all familiar with what bonsai is.

@peterchan3100 Your videos gives knowledge and some of your words becomes wisdom/motivation. I will not forget on one of your videos when your creating a penjing and youve said "There's no point of doing things you dont like". I realized that sometimes we just need to check the better perspective of life and enjoy things. Thank you!

For me, gardening is more domestic and manmade, bonsai is more wild. Even when we train their shape, they are trees, and have greater longevity. Especially with yamadori...

Some people like pets, some - plants. The difference, I think, is that some people need to be loved more (by animals, especially dog lovers belong to this group) than to love. Those who love plants - these people need to love more than to be loved. To take care. And they need to admire and appreciate what they see: all these leaves of different colours, shapes of the trees, the scent, the petal touches etc. - oh, you know what I’m talking about. So, to my mind, plant lovers are more altruistic by nature. Then, why bonsai: what plants need more constant attention than bonsai? Those who love, take care of and appreciate bonsai - these people are even more caring and altruistic by nature. The last but not least: creativity. This gives us, plant and bonsai lovers, the highest form of satisfaction and realisation of our abilities. Only creativity gives it. We find it in this type of art-making. Bonsaists are creative altruists:))
@e-nglish6355 күн бұрын
I’d like to add and clarify the idea. Those who have pets also take care of them. And love them. But pets give back this love, people enjoy feeling this love from their pets. What plant lovers have? They talk to their plants (well, I do), but they don’t hear the answer. They love and don’t feel love in return. Plant are happy, plants flourish - that’s the greatest ”give back” for plant lovers. The happiness of those who plant lovers cherish - that’s the most important thing for them (us). We don’t expect love from our plants. (Though I’m sure they recognise our loving presence and our caring hands:) That’s the difference. Plant lovers can love and give without any other gratification than well-being of those who they love. That’s the purest form of altruism. And of course, altruists are happy making their plants happy.

The "inherent" attraction, appreciation, and admiration of things in nature is our spirit, our soul's, recognition of our Father's hand of creation and our desire to replicate or be immersed in these things are our soul's longing to be with Him again. Even those who do not believe, or even deny His existence, experience this. It's not the creation but the Creator that our spirits see and want to be "in touch" with. Merry Christmas my friends and may God continue to bless you with His revelations of Himself. Matthew 1:21 "She will give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins. " ✝️🇺🇲🙏👍
