Not scary, just technically easier. From and engineering and material science point of view, it's just a whole hell of a lot easier keeping 14.7 psi of pressure inside of a space capsule than it is to keep 15,750 psi outside of a diving bell. And that's when people are involved. Take humans out of the equation and robotic craft to the moon don't need any atmospheric containment at all. Robotic craft to the bottom of the ocean, however, **STILL** need to keep all that water pressure out. For more than half a century, exploring the moon has been significantly easier than exploring the bottom of the ocean. Just because it is further away really had very little to do with it. it is only recently, in the last decade or two that deep water craft capable of those depths have started becoming available. And even then, far more spacecraft exist today than bathyspheres or DSVs. (I know, that alone sounds really weird.)

The pressure doesn't explain in the slightest their morphology and appearance. There are animals with similar shapes in the shallower areas where the pressure is much less. Piranhas are similar in many respects to anglerfish and yet they live in completely different pressures. Also, the reason for the bioluminescence of the anglerfish due to a symbiotic relationship with bacteria is not very convincing. Seems to me that they simply offer any explanation rather than no explanation. This way people have "knowledge". Knowledge is not based on speculation.

i can't really answer that question at the end, the reason being is because of how i view both space and the bottom of the ocean, i think both would be awesome however the way i view the ocean with us being down there is pretty much the Bioshock's city of Rapture, space on the other hand has been influenced by anime and manga since the early 2000s and the most recent one being Sidonia no Kishi in which the earth is attacked by aliens and mankind only managed to survive by colonizing meteors to stay out of their way and modifying human genetics to be able to use photosynthesis(yes, it's silly, but still awesome and i love the soundtrack), so i can't pick one over the other

The moon - barren land full of rocks. Ocean floor - variety of different unknown species, and maybe even abiotic material that can only be formed and found there. Sure low gravity sound fun an all, but it get boring after a while, especially if that’s the only thing.Plus the ocean floor would be like almost the same. Kindave.

i know that this is a very old comment but has the area is very secluded which means that the individuals that live there are very different from the ones we are used to so the species rarelly go exctint (because they arent affected by lack of food due to our fishing for example) such as the frilled shark so we kinda have evidence that sustains that theory hope i could clear things out for you

Would I want to go to the bottom of the abyss or the surface of the moon? The bottom of the ocean abyss might yield a lot of money if you know what to look for. Sunken ships would be the first thing to explore, if you know it's never been touched because of the sheer depth then there could be gold or silver still sitting in the cargo. If you're going deeper than anyone else has gone there is also the possibility of analyzing new rock structures and canyons, which might have quartz veins and loose gold nuggets just lying all over the place/lodged in cracks etc. Have a pressure nozzle on your submersible that can spray all that loose sediment out of the way. Lots of people already dredge Alaska's coast, because of the glacial activity carving through the land and into the ocean. All that gold doesn't just sit up there, there's no way, it must be pushed deeper by the current over time all the way to the bottom.

2 questions: I don't get why an eel shape is better at withstanding pressure than something like a ray. Could someone help? You say the pressure at the bottom of the ocean is 600x that of earth. Is the pressure an organism feels from the up/down axis the same as it feels on it's sides?

That is interesteng. There is some really wierd stuff down there. I think those fish are ugly. When I try to think of the prettiest fish, what comes to my mind is the squirrel fish. It is colorful and adorable. Ironicly it does have a deep water relative, called the flashlight fish. They don't look too bad for a deep sea fish. I am surprized you talked about the reproductive habits of angler fish. O_o I think I would rather go to the deep sea than go to the moon. I have an obsession with animals, and the moon is too dead for my taste.
