There was an old fanmade story about how the Iron Hands dealt with Lucius. The first instant was a Captain taking a Thunder Hammer to his knee, hobbling him and putting him out of the fight for a while. So it became doctrine that whenever the Iron Hands faced the guy, they would just disable him. Even the White Scars and Space Wolves did this. From chasing him around on a bike to a dreadnaught just dropping it's massive weight on him and pinning him to the ground. Don't need to kill him to defeat him.

There was one instance where Slaanesh had to resurrect Lucius himself, this was due to the fact that a Raven Guard Champion killed Lucius and took absolutely NO Pride in killing him. It could have been the guy who placed the landmine. But he was either dead or hated his job. Could have been the commander who ordered the landmine, but he was probably dead. Could have been the guy who pulled the landmine off the transport, but he probably hated his job. It was Slaanesh bending the rules of the magic a bit. They would have settled on someone sooner or later. It just settled on Tobias because he was probably the closest to the Lucius. Someone would have been viable sooner or later.

What annoys me about Lucius is that his resurrection gimmick at first glance seems really interesting, but then you find out about the obvious rules patch to it which both effectively removes the twist and guarantees that he can't interact with some factions on a meaningful level. Lucius encountering Necrons or Tyranids should be thrilling, as he knows they can possibly kill him for good and has to act accordingly. Instead Lucius will never lose to Necrons or Tyranids because that would mean a C'tan or the Hive Mind will turn into Lucius and no writer would EVER get the green light on that. Edit: I didn't even know about the time someone genuinely killed him without pride but Slaanesh brought him back anyways. That's... that's just not even trying any more. That's the kid on the playground with his everything-proof shield.

The resurrection that happened after Lucius was killed by someone not taking pride in the act was the point of no return for me. The rule is there so that if GW decide to kill him off, they have a way to do so. It would be like if in the Return of the King, when the Witch King of Angmar says "No man can kill me" and Éowyn took off her melmet, shouted "suck my nonexistant dick!" and fatally stabbed him, but instead of dying he just stood there and said "Was that it"? It would feel like a cop-out, and it is. I can get twisting some of the thing around, like someone not having pride in killing Lucius, but taking pride in their service to the Big E, and that being enough. Or perhaps, Lucius is killed and his killer doesn't feel pride in the act now, but perhaps years down the line does, and that is enough. Slaanesh just booping Lucius back is a terrible Deus Ex Machina, and turns an interesting curse into a literal plot armor.

Thing is, all the chosen champions of the Chaos gods are like that. Kharne has died multiple times. Khorne just brings him back. Off the top of my head I can't remember if Ahriman or Typhos have actually died, but if they did it's a pretty sure bet their god would bring them back. Typhos is practically a walking corpse in the first place so it's barely a stretch there and Tzeentch would likely bring Ahriman back just because he enjoys messing with him and using him in various plots. Beyond that pretty much all daemonic characters are un-killable except but like 0.0000000000000000000000000000000001% of of the 40k universe, at least in the permanent sense. And that's probably way too few zeroes. And now dead Primarchs are coming back as well. Where warp fuckery is in any way involved, it does seem that death is not necessarily permanent. Also if GW needs to sell models it's not permanent.

The landmine story could work if it was slightly rewritten. Imagine if the manufactorum Tobias worked in was on a planet currently under assault by the Emperor’s Children led by Lucius. Imagine Tobias is an overseer who prides himself on skilled and smooth work. After a major battle, members of the PDF come through the city proclaiming the defeat and flight of the Chaos Heretics. The commander of the PDF comes to speak with Tobias personally. He’s confused, but happy to receive the commander. Tobias is told that the victory was due to his contribution specifically. Confused, he asks how and why - and is told the enemy leader died due to a careless moment of stepping on one of the landmines Tobias produced and saw placed on the battlefield. He experiences a moment of pure dumbstruck wonder…and then a rush of pride that he had a role in defeating an enemy commander with his labor for the Emperor and His Imperium. And that’s the moment he hears Lucius speak into his mind for the first time.

One of my favorite bits of obscure fan fiction/homebrew is Hive Fleet Banshee, a very small (by Tyrannid standards) hive fleet that is the hypothetical answer to the question, “what would happen if Lucius the Eternal was eaten by Nids?” In a nutshell, he’s kinda/sorta “possessed” a single hive ship and it’s contingent of bugs, he is in constant pain from his soul being fragmented into the millions of Nids that now make up his “body”, and he finds this new form entirely disgusting and un-fabulous. And yes, I love this concept *entirely* because it’s a (slightly) plausible way to make Lucius, a character I really dislike, suffer eternally.

He'd be controlling a million+ bodies at the same time as well, a good way to effectively neutralize him as a threat. After all he is not the Nid Hivemind, nor is he even a psyker as far as I know. Not a single one having enough of him in it to allow any sort of effective control.

In my opinion, the reason other villains who are more powerful are not as hated is because other villains have more straight forward abilities. Lucius' ability boils down to "the rules of the universe literally won't let him lose a fight. No matter how badly he performs, he will always win in the end". It's the literary equivalent to activating a "gotcha" stratagem at the end of a 40k match to win instead of winning through strategy and being the better player.

My issue with Lucius is that when there is no fear of him dying (or anyone with a plot armour as thick as that) it never changes the outcome of said character. Lucius gets defeated = He survives, Lucius defeats his opponent = He survives. This creates really one dimensional character and as soon as you read something like "One hulking man stepped over the felled blast door. His armour was ordained by the souls he once fought, it was Lucius." You instantly know what will happen to him if it comes to battle. It is really hard to get excited about a villain who, even when they die, they win.

Tbf Slaanesh making Lucius immortal was cheating the system in the first place to get his champion back when he lost. So obviously Slaanesh is going to bend the rules as far as he wants or disregard them entirely - after all, Slaanesh is a Chaos God, they don't *do* integrity or consistency.
@NeiasaurusCreations

@@spiritvdc5109Issue is that it kinda kills off any enjoyment of lucis as a character. Because a character that can literally NEVER die, whos rules are inconsistent to the extreme, and a character that even when they lose, they still win is just...Boring? Because now there's a loophole that even if he dies, if the ammunition he's killed with is made by a worker who takes pride in that, he'll come back, basically ensures there is NO way to kill him. Which is a serious problem. Because a character that has no stakes, has no real interest to them. The best villians are ones that know failures and successes. My boy angron is an example of this. Dude fails, a LOT, but he also gets his moments. So when angron roars, people take note. And angron is a demon primarch, but has less OP immortality than lucis... Ain't that just a peach?

I like that the resurrection rules basically guarantee that if/when he is permanently killed, it's going to be the most ignominious way that it could possibly happen in. He either dies to something random and unexpected independent of his skill, but without the added benefit of "The mine maker took pride in his work." Like getting hit by a shell fired by someone that's not happy to be fighting for the imperium in an army with no general and with a shell that JUST SO HAPPENED to be crafted on a heretic world that would be more disappointed than glad their shell got sent to the imperium, in a chain of dissatisfied circumstances that would seem like they were intentionally planned that way if anyone looked at it too closely. OR He keeps doing so well that Slaneesh just gets bored and yoinks all the power out of him. There's no glorious ending here for him. He either dies unimpressively to a foe that couldn't care less that he exists or that they even managed to kill him, or he gets replaced for some other champion who happens to be fresher than he is. Even if he's more skilled.

There was a story that made Lucius a bit more sympathetic as a character. The story is called The Reflection Crack'd. He finds out that Fulgrim is not really Fulgrim and he has dreams that grip him with fear. He sees the changes in the other men within his legion and recalls the horrors of Istvaan, and seems to regret following Fulgrim down the path of what is essentially damnation. It's a good story and humanizes the character, I think.

That's a great story. I feel like it gets underrated because people get put off by the scene where they try to torture the demon out of Fulgrim. Torture scenes are like curry that way.

I think the biggest issue with Lucius for me is that Chaos is supposed to a self-destructive path, but it's seemingly only a boon for Lucius to get away with anything. He can't lose, because if he loses, he wins. Erebus, the "Hand of Destiny", is despised by all, even (and especially) by the traitors he helped make. He's a disposable pawn of Chaos that has nothing, and whose pride will see him inevitably abandoned by the very gods he's served all this time. Much the same with Lorgar- his piety and service are tools, and under Chaos, he's a shadow of what the Emperor intended- a laughingstock that can only hide away from Corvus and scribble on inane rantings that none of the other Chaos factions give the slightest shit about. Mortarion, Angron, and Fulgrim are shadows of themselves, lost to their worst aspects. Mortarion is a pathetic hypocrite, who didn't even truly get to chose his own path. Angron is just a mindless madman who has to be corralled like cattle to get anything meaningful done, and Fulgrim's vanity has lead to him and his chapter to lose any dignity they once had. Those that fell to Chaos lost things that were meaningful to them. Not just generic loss of soul or self- though that is included- they lose so much more, and often by their own hand. But Lucius? He's won the Chaos boon lottery. If he dies, he comes back. Is there any pain or torment to this? Not really, and certainly not enough for a man who already mutilated himself for pride. Does he lose anything, or have to overcome anything to resurrect through the body he takes over? No. There's no struggle at all for him to come back. Hell, he'll resurrect through the MANUFACTURER of a landmine that killed him- not because the man knew it killed Lucius, but simply because the man took pride in working hard. Lucius curse takes nothing from him. It changes nothing about him. He gets to be 'the best swordsman', and though he has to 'seek out more dangerous foes', there is zero risk to him whatsoever. If he beats them, he wins. If he loses, he'll resurrect effortlessly through his opponent, killing them, and thus, by losing, winning. There's no cost. No risk. No effort. Slaanesh just gave them a free win card for every scenario, and Lucius has lost nothing of personal value to himself in the process. It's boring and stupid, and undermines what makes Chaos compelling- Chaos should always be a two-edged sword, a monkey's paw that collects its cost with interest.

Lucius' resurrection is kinda iffy for me. Someone who legitimately took pride in defeating him in 1-v-1 combat being the source of his resurrection is one thing, but a guy who took pride in his job building landmines being the source of his resurrection is a bit out there for me.Mind you, I found it funny that Lucius kinda losing his cool when he found out that his death was caused by something so mundane as stepping on a landmine was hilarious for me. If I had written his lore, then I'd write it as anyone wounded by the Laer blade, as it holds a small portion of his soul and it infects you with a portion of his psychic essence, would be the source of his resurrection. That could lead to things like a combatant he slashed with the blade, or a guardsman who picked up the blade and accidentally cut themselves, or a Slaaneshi cultist taking the blade and using it to stage an attack so they can wound hem, even if only a scratch with the blade. That could lead to so many situations where he has the chance to best an opponent, but instead just gives them a small cut and lets them get away, and slowly over time they're driven by increasingly insane obsessions to be the best at whatever they do and slowly driven to greater and greater acts of excess until they're driven into the worship of Slaanesh and servitude under him as part of his war band or as a cultist.

It really should be the person who struck the blow that gets cursed and they need to know they killed him. Cuz it leads to weird things like the landline incident, is the factory worker cursed? Is the guy who put the mine down cursed if he felt the smallest hint of pride. It just feels a little too overtuned.

I think that another Chaos character who also has kind a bad reputation is Abaddon. Mostly as the "armless" had lost more crusades than he won, and thus is considered a failure.

Eternally tormented by whispers from those who have defeated him; yet never able to challenge them to a redemptive rematch. Compounded by the fact that his core value is perfection… Wes you sold me on what I considered to be the biggest eye roll of a villain in 40k. I’m impressed. You have a gift. Please do eisenhorn (it even better his retinue). Please. Edit: 16:20 that horn looks like a d*ck

It's still an eye roll villain because of how absurd the plot armour is. Characters like that exist to get killed using a loophole in their power, yet the landmine and kill without pride examples show that the power isn't as specific as they want you to believe, and is more like "fuck you, i win regardless of what happens". Lose the fight, win and have him resurrect while killing you, circumvent the resurrection and have him come back through a deus ex machina asspull anyway... It makes no difference. There are zero stakes in anything he's involved in, because the moment he appears in a situation you know he will win

I think we can ALL agree, Lucius’ best duel was when Loken busted his face open in the training cages. Lesson learned he even tells Loken “You won’t get me next time”. Also the internal battle with the spirit inside the Lair Blade was awesome. Pre-mental breakdown I think he got the most hate because he is damn good if not the best, but he learns and never repeats the same mistake. He talks a big talk, but then walks even bigger. Also, the moment he betrays Saul Tarvitz in the Coral City was absolutely thrilling. I think that was the moment his pride got the best of him. He was pissy because he was put planetside to secretly face exterminatus. I thought his trying to negotiate with Arabus was a larger scheme to get his revenge for being thrown away.

I think Fulfrim’s unappeal for me is the lack of failure. If a character can’t fail to achieve what they are after then there are no stakes. Fulgrims goal is to become the best duelist by fighting the best and stealing their skill if they defeat them. So there’s no way to fail for him. Therefore no stakes

My issue with Lucius is especially with the land mine story. Because it takes away the story of who kills Lucius to "What kills him". This opens the door of "Is it the person killing Lucius or is it the weapon". I've seen some people write about how it wasn't the guardsman who was cursed, because being a guardsman he was probably already dead, but then if you look at Nykonna Sharrowkyn, the loophole there would be that maybe someone somewhere had created the weapons Nykonna Sharrowkyn used, and he took pride in his work. Then there's the comments about using the Emperor's sword or Anathame blade might be able to kill Lucius for good, but I feel with the writing of 40k we're getting, there'd be another loophole.

Lucius is able to constantly reincarnate within the body of any being that manages to kill him, effectively making him immortal. So long as the killer takes some measure of satisfaction from the victory over Lucius, this will result in the victor's body transforming and their soul becoming trapped in Lucius' suit of power armour. So if a necron killed him he couldn't resurrect as a necron has no feels of satisfaction?????????

I think it’s more than that because pretty much all the major Chaos Characters in 40K have managed to survived the past 10 thousand years, but Lucius is especially hated because he wins through cheating and exploits, and it’s not even in a tactical or clever way that shows off Lucius’ tactical mindset or cleverness. He’s not competent enough to be a badass, but he can simultaneously never be realistically challenged to make him an interesting character. Also he’s not even a particular fun type of Slaaneshi character, he doesn’t have the showmanship of someone like Sigvald the Magnificent from Fantasy.
