Ford conveniently leaves out the fact that the Bronco nameplate was discontinued in 1996 and went unused for decades until the new version of the Bronco came out a number of years ago.

Something Ford tried to control was used parts. Some years ago they were trying to start Ford only junkyards. It didn't work out for them. Insurance companies also don't like it when body shops make more money than the insurance companies want to allow. An estimate written for new factory parts gives the shops a chance to make extra money by using used parts. So much so that insurance companies write cheaper estimates because they write them using used and after market parts. Happy Motoring.

Regarding the safety point: if the chassis, which is the component crash-tested, remains unchanged, no additional testing is required. Modifying or changing body panels does not constitute an alteration to the chassis. For example, see Alpina and BMW. Additionally, the interior of the Vintage Bronco appears identical to my wife’s 2023 Badlands Bronco, with the airbags still located in their factory positions. Therefore, I don’t believe Ford’s safety argument has a strong foundation.
@quademasters24915 сағат бұрын
I don't agree. Any changes can have unintended side effects, like the hood going into the windshield instead of crumpling up like the OEM one was designed to do. That said, if the owner buys a new Bronco and they then bolt these parts on, I see no legal issues. You can mod your own car. On the other hand, if this company is modding Bronco's and selling them on as new vehicles, they're just asking for trouble. I imagine Alpina has to crash some of their modded cars to make sure they still meet any safety standards.
@IHC_235 сағат бұрын
@quademasters249 If you visit NHTSA.gov and search for Alpina in the ratings section, you’ll see that all of their cars since 2011 are listed as 'Not Rated' across the board. This is because Alpina vehicles are often exempt from individual crash testing. As low-volume manufacturers working primarily as coachbuilders, they do not modify the main structure of the vehicles, so additional crash testing is not required. As for the concern about body panels being unsafe, I understand your point. While body panels themselves are not subject to crash testing, there are certification processes that ensure they meet 'OEM compliance' standards. If Vintage Broncos can demonstrate that their body panels conform to these standards, Ford should back down. They probably won’t, but they should.

I don't consider it a resto-mod. A resto-mod would be to install a modern drivetrain into an old Bronco. This is straight up modding. Like ricers. These people build body kits to bolt onto modern Bronco's.

After a car manufacturer sells a car to a customer or reseller it is not their property anymore. If you repair, modify or resell a product you are allowed to call that product by its name. Common logic and morality. I hope the retro modding company throws the book at Ford! Also the US needs to change their legal system so that huge companies cant make this form of shenanigans towards their customers and the modding community.

Ford is still feeling the pain from the Pinto and the Bronco II vehicles and the lawsuits that resulted. But, if the large number of very, very lightly used 21st century Broncos I'm seeing on used car lots is any indication of "Ford Tough" I'd probably feel just as comfortable and safe in one of the Vintage Broncos products as I would the "real" Broncos Ford keeps churning out.

Those pvc pipe tool holders are cool. Edit: Vintage Broncos should definitely get sued for claiming that their cars have all those safety certifications. I think Ford would be within their rights to sue for copyright infringement or something along those lines, but I think VB should be allowed to buy, modify, and resell whatever they want. Just without using Ford's branding and claiming to have certifications they don't.

If Vintage Broncos had the customer provide a new Bronco and charged for the restyling service and related parts Ford would have no standing because they would not be selling vehicles but a styling service. By selling vehicles and invoking the Bronco name they get into murky legal waters.

I think has a lot to do with the name of the company, paired with the fact that they're using Ford's safety ratings on their vehicles. Vintage Broncos is playing a dangerous game that could affect a whole industry. They need to completely get rid of the safety promo, and change their name to something else and they'll be fine.

Replacing body panels does not mean it has to be retested for crashing, if that were so body shops would all have to close, they use panels and shells made by anyone and Ford doesn't complain about that, the problem here is Ford knows they dropped the ball on this one, they should have been producing what people want, a 70s styled bronco with modern equipment, modern EFI engines, air-bags, and modern infotainment consoles built into dash boards,

I own an older Ford and have become singularly unimpressed by Ford in recent years. For example, the original Ford Lightning pickups were great! Factory rodded pickups for those who don't know. Now with the RIDICULOUS government mandated EVs, Ford has ruined the Lightning pickups. Further undermining themselves, Ford going after little guys who understand their vintage products better than the current Ford leadership does only adds fuel to the fire, hypothetically speaking, for me to look elsewhere for my next vehicle.

This is technically not an accurate video. They're not going after restomodding in general, they're going after a company that was using the _trademarked_ Bronco name without permission. You might notice that the company changed their name to Vintage Modern and has loaded their site with disclaimers saying to "not call their vehicles 'Broncos' anymore", this tells me it's probably going to be settled out of court. That being said, the reason why this is only _technically_ not accurate is because Ford has made some misleading statements about the case, claiming that it's over the resale of modded vehicles and not just a trademark issue, but you can't actually sue over that at all and if they tried to it'd just get dismissed. There's no legal basis to sue mod and restoration shops for simply reselling modified vehicles - if there was, Hennessy and RUF would have already been sued out of existence. Still, it is true that Ford is aiming for a LOT more than they can actually legally get. Do I think that Ford is completely in the right for this? No. Honestly, I would have tried to resolve the issue before escalating to a legal dispute in the first place. But I don't think Vintage Modern is completely clean here either. Point is, it's good to dig in deeper when stuff like this happens, there's usually more to it than the sensationalized headline of "big company does shit thing to small company".

This has nothing to do with restomoding. But I guess I fell for the clickbait. If it was about restomoding they would sue Icon and others. This has to do with how this one business is selling modified new vehicles and could have easily avoided it without making certain claims and so forth. Vintage Broncos is making claims that could get Ford sued and to protect themselves they have to take action here. It has nothing to do with any 'you own nothing and be happy' schemes. The Ford Pinto was a media hit job and a myth. Anyone who has done any reading up on it knows how the media misrepresented things such as calculations the federal government required Ford and other automakers to do.
