Ignatius was John’s disciple, and he clearly believed in the real presence. Maybe John didn’t make it absolutely clear in his book because he didn’t think he needed to, but he definitely taught his disciples the truth of the Eucharist. “Take note of those who hold heterodox opinions on the grace of Jesus Christ which has come to us, and see how contrary their opinions are to the mind of God. . . . They abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer because they do not confess that the Eucharist is the flesh of our Savior Jesus Christ, flesh which suffered for our sins and which that Father, in his goodness, raised up again. They who deny the gift of God are perishing in their disputes” (Letter to the Smyrnaeans 6:2-7:1 [A.D. 110]).

John made it very clear. The bible, as the INFALLIBLE, word of God has a TRUE meaning. One meaning. Anyone can interpret the bible however they want. However, the meaning of the bible has already been established. The Church gave us the meaning. The Church came before the bible.I don't think the holy spirit had it wrong for 1500 years then decided Luther was the person to straighten out the church. The following short video should clear up any questions one might have about what John means. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKOrhGOkh5KSZs0

@@SoftBreadSoft no but i believe John taught the truth. Do you believe the church was corrupt and in error right from the beginning?
@declare91254 жыл бұрын
Peace be with you, Pastor. Though I disagree with some of your interpretations, I thank you for your sincere and moving thoughts. You tried to explain with an open mind a passage that, I believe, is very doctrinal. (At one point, I felt as if you wanted to say the word “literal,” only that you held back.) I would like to offer 4 reasons why I take literally the words of Jesus in John 6:51-58, and why I believe it refers to the Eucharist: (1) evidence from the words used (2) evidence from context (3) evidence from the difficulties created by a “figurative” or “symbolic” interpretation (4) evidence from the consistent teachings of the early Church Fathers FIRST, evidence of words used. In these passages, John doesn’t just use the classical Greek verb “phago” for human eating. Instead, he uses a word that denotes animal eating, “trogo,” which means to “munch” or “gnaw.” This adds emphasis to the reality of the flesh and blood of Jesus. “Trogo” is used twice here (v. 54, 56-58) and NOWHERE ELSE in the New Testament. The word itself is as graphically literal as eating can get. No wonder the disciples are shocked! Moreover, in verse 55, John uses the Greek word “alethes,” meaning “actual, real, indeed.” Jesus is in effect saying that his flesh is REAL food, and his blood is REAL drink-not symbolic food or symbolic drink. We’re not being true to Jesus if don’t communicate EXACTLY what he meant. SECOND, evidence from context. The disciples were “misunderstanding” him, and yet Jesus made no effort to clarify his words, which would be the case if he was speaking metaphorically or symbolically. Remember that, in other passages, he corrected Nicodemus (Jn 3:3-10) or clarified to the woman at the well what he meant (Jn 4:7-13). And yet here, he doubled down. Despite many of his disciples leaving him, shocked and scandalized (Jn 6:60, 66), he offered no clarification. Please note that this is the only time in all his ministry that Jesus’s disciples left him over a doctrinal issue. THIRD, evidence from the shortcomings of a figurative interpretation. When Jesus says, “I am the light of the world” (Jn 8:12), that makes sense as a metaphor. Just as light gives illumination so does Jesus. A metaphor passes the “Just as” test. When Jesus says “I am the door,” it makes sense as a metaphor. Just as we can enter a door, so can we enter Jesus, enter in salvation. However, when Jesus says “the bread...is my flesh,” the Just-as test makes it literal even more (Just as we can eat bread, so can we eat Jesus’s flesh). And most importantly, the metaphorical or symbolic meaning of the word “Eat my flesh” during Jesus’s time meant to hate, murder, or destroy someone (Ps 14:4, 27:2, 53:4, Zech 11:9), and “Drink my blood” was against God’s law (Gen. 9:4, Lev. 3:17, Deut. 12:23, Acts 15:20). It would make no sense for Jesus to command his disciples to commit sin or violence, which would be the case if he was speaking in metaphor. FOURTH, there is overwhelming historical testimony on the doctrine of the Holy Eucharist. If ever there is disagreement on this passage, or any bible passage for that matter, wouldn’t it be wise to see how the early Christians interpreted it? How they put the doctrine into practice? Yet, at the risk of being accused of bias, I’d rather quote non-Catholic authors. For instance, Protestant scholar Darwell Stone in “A History if the Doctrine of the Holy Eucharist” writes regarding the time of the Ante-Nicene Fathers: “[T]hroughout the writers of the period the identification of the elements with the BODY AND BLOOD of Christ appears to be the ruling idea” (vol. I, p. 54). Anglican scholar JND Kelly in his “Early Christian Doctrines,” aside from quoting Irenaeus and other Church Fathers that the bread and wine are REALLY the Lord’s body and blood, adds that “[T]he writers and liturgies of the period are UNANIMOUS in recognizing it as such.” (pp 196-198, emphasis added). The witness of the early Christians attests to the literalness of Jesus’s words. Peace be with you and God bless.

@de Clare Amen, Amen and Alleluia for someone to speak the Truth here! Also I recently finished reading Scott Hahn’s book "Consuming The Word" where he goes deeper into the context of how the Jews of Jesus’ time and the Church Fathers after would have looked at what Jesus did. He offered his very body and blood as part of the PASSOVER meal which was a celebration of the Hebrew/Jewish people as a sign and sacrament (oath) of the COVENANT between God and His people. In Matthew and Mark Jesus calls his blood the convent. In Luke He calls it the New Covenant and in John Jesus says unless you eat if my body and drink of my blood you do not have life within you. And He said DO THIS in remembrance of me. In other words Jesus was establishing a new sacrament to replace the Old sacrament of the Passover sacrifice of the Lamb with His sacrifice of His Body. And so, as you noted, the Eucharist (Thanksgiving for Jesus sacrifice) is central and primary to both our worship and our salvation (Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life Jn 6:55). The “New Testament” is Jesus NOT the books at the second part of our Bible! When the New Testament is spoken about in the books of the New Testament they always refer to JESUS, not the books! :) This has opened my eyes to the wonder of the Eucharist and our role in continuing to make the oath every Sunday that we want to abide in Him and Him literally in us! Praise God!

The foolish virgins are jews and those judaized. Judah alone was divorced. Jeremiah 18/13 'In that case, Yahweh says this: "Ask now among the nations, who has heard of such things? The virgin of Israel has committed a most vile thing. 14 Does the snow of Lebanon cease from its rocky slopes, or do you abandon the cold waters flowing from afar? 15 Because My people have forgotten Me, they have burned incense to idols and they have caused them to stumble in their ways from the age-old paths, to walk on pathways, not on a highway, 16 to make their land desolate, a perpetual hissing[Matt23/33]; everyone who passes by there will be astonished and shake his head. 17 I will scatter them as if by an east wind before the enemy; I will show them My back and not My face in the day of their calamity." 18 Then they said, 'Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah For the law will not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us strike him with hard words, and let us not give heed to any of his words.' I say Jews and Judaized Matthew 23/29 'Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you found the tombs of the prophets and decorate the memorial tombs of the righteous, 30 and you say, "If we had been around in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets," 31 so that you give witness against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers! 33 Serpents! Progeny of vipers![divorced treacherous sister Judah] How can you escape from the judgment of the Valley of Hinnom?[read Obadiah his word is faithful and true] 34 'On account of this, you understand, I authorize for you prophets and sophisticated men and scribes, and some of them you will murder and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from town to town, 35 so that against you might come all the righteous blood poured out on the Earth, from the blood of the righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the Sanctuary and the altar. 36 Truly I say to you, all these things will come against this race. 37 'Jerusalem, Jerusalem, murdering the prophets and stoning those who have been sent to her! How often I have longed to gather together your children, in the way that a bird gathers together her chicks under the wings, but you have not been willing! 38 See now, your house is being left to you desolate. 39 For I say to you, you will by no means see me from now until you will say: "Exalted is the one coming in the name of the Lord."' In the authority of Yahweh and Jesus Judah, Judah murdering the prophets and stoning those who have been sent to her! In the context of Jeremiah 2/28-37 it is speaking only of Judah! Judah! Verse 28 Judah... Jeremiah 2/32 "Can a virgin forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? Yet My people have forgotten Me, for days without number. 33 Why do you ornament your way to look for love? For this reason you have even taught your ways to wicked women. 34 And on your skirts is found the blood of the lives of helpless innocent people. I have not found it by searching, but it is on all these skirts. 35 Yet you say, 'Because I am innocent, surely His anger will turn from me.' As you will see, I will enter into judgment with you, because you say 'I have not sinned.' John 16/7 'But I speak the truth to you. It is to your advantage that I should go away, for if I do not go away the Counsellor cannot come to you. But if I depart, I will send him to you. 8 'And when he comes, he will make the facts known to the world concerning sin, and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgement: 9 concerning sin, because they[jews/judaized] do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I am going away to my Father and you will behold me no more; 11 and concerning judgement, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. Matthew 25/1 At that point, the Kingdom of the Exalted[Israelites, not divorced Judah] will be likened to ten virgins who, having taken their torches, went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 But five of them were prudent, and five foolish. 3 Those being foolish, having taken their torches, took no oil with them, 4 but the wise took oil in their containers with their torches. 5 'But the bridegroom lingered, and they all became drowsy and went to sleep. 6 But at midnight an uproar arose: "Look, the bridegroom's coming! Come out to meet him." 7 Then all those virgins were woken and they trimmed their torches. 8 But the foolish said to the wise, "Give us some of your oil, because our torches are being snuffed out." 9 'The wise, though, answered, saying, "In case there might not be enough for us and for you, you rather, though, go for yourselves to those who sell and buy." 10 But as they went their way to make the purchase, the bridegroom came, and those ready went in with him to the wedding feast, and the door was shut. 11 'Afterwards the other virgins came as well, saying, "Lord, Lord, open for us." 12 But in answer, he said, "Truly I say to you, I do not know you." 13 Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming. Those saying it's about being rapture ready, who judaized you? Amos 5/18 'Woe to you who long for the day of Yahweh! For what good is the day of Yahweh for you? The day of Yahweh is darkness, and not light; Matthew 24/39 and they did not come to know until the flood[of people] came and wiped everybody out, so also will be the magisterial presence of the Son of Man. 40 'Then two men will be in the field; the one will be taken[killed], and the other will be left.[no cowards will enter the kingdom] 41 Two women [wise & foolish] will be grinding in the mill; one will be taken[killed], and the other will be left [a coward bridegroom denier] 42 'Be watchful, therefore, for you do not have any intuitive knowledge of what time your Lord comes. 43 But know this: that if the master of the house had intuitively known in which watch the thief was coming, he would have been on guard and not allowed his house to be broken into. 44 On account of this, you also must become ready, for the Son of Man comes in an hour you do not expect. 45 'Who, then, is the faithful and wise servant whom his master has made ruler at the head of his household, to give them food in due season? 46 Joyful is that servant whom his master, in his coming, will find doing this. 47 Truly I say to you, he will make him ruler in charge of all his property.[John 16/13-16] Hosea 6/9 And as gangs of robbers lie in wait for a man, so the company of priests murder in the road by consent, for they commit lewdness. Matthew 24/48[foolish virgin judaized] But if that evil servant should say in his heart, "My master delays to come," 49 and should begin to beat the fellow servants [wise virgins], and to eat and drink with the drunkards[to kill the Son of Man, the Son of God Set Apart by the Blood & Oil of Jesus], 50 the master[Son of Man, Bridegroom Set Apart by Jesus] of that servant [wise virgin] will come in a day in which he[foolish virgin] does not expect, and in a hour he[foolish virgin] is not aware of, 51 and he[Bridegroom] will cut him [foolish virgin] in two, and assign his[Judaized foolish virgin] portion with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Jesus prophesying the Son of Man would be anointed by his blood and oil and knew it took two sacrifices for atonement John 6/53 So Jesus said to them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you unless you [kill] eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life in you. [Rev 19/17...'Come and gather yourselves together for the feast of the Mighty God, 18 so that you can eat the flesh of kings and flesh of commanders of a thousand and flesh of the Mighty men.] 54 He[Bridegroom] who feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eonian life, and I will raise him up in the last day.[Because the foolish virgins kill him] 55 For my flesh most truly is food, and my blood most truly is drink. 56 He[Bridegroom] who feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. Psalm 109/18 As He clothed himself with a cursing as with his garment, so let it go like water into his bowels, and like oil into his bones. John 6/57 'As the living Father authorized me, and I live through the Father, the one feeding on me will also live through me. 58 This is that bread come down from Heaven, not comparable to how your fathers ate the manna and died. He who eats this bread[Son of Man/Bridegroom but as a wise virgin who believes and doesn't kill him] will live throughout the eon.

This man misquotes John 6:53 (hopefully accidentally). Jesus said, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.” But the man in the video said, “no life in him.” That’s a big difference. If you want life in you, do what Jesus says. Eat his flesh in the bread of the Eucharist, as Jesus made clear in the last supper and the early Christians did (and Catholics do today). God bless you!

I think Jesus meant it literally, after all, why did thousands of his followers except 12 leave him when he mentioned that? Then he turns to the apostles and says "will you leave also?" How come he didn't tell them it was figurative? I think he meant it literally and the people left because of that. And that's why Jesus didn't go after them.

John 6 25-70 25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” 26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.” 28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” 29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” 30 So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’[c]” 32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.” 35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.” 41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?” 43 “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’[d] Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” 52 Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. Many Disciples Desert Jesus 60 On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?” 61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you? 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! 63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you-they are full of the Spirit[e] and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.” 66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. 67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.” 70 Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!” 71 (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)

Another protestant calling Catholics cannibals (albeit, in a very polite way). Some things will never change. This interpretation of John 6 is a reach. Jesus never preached something so literal as John 6. There was nothing figurative about it. He said the same thing 10 times over in slightly different ways and He let the first protestants on earth walk away when they thought it was too gross. He didn't change His message. He doubled down. Not to mention, how do you reconcile that all the apostles believed in the physical True Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist and passed that on to the early Church? Confusion is from the enemy. This preacher is confused. Jesus made it very clear and simple
@jacobanderson2199 Жыл бұрын
Amen, to add to that statement, Jesus immediately ratifies his literal statement in the versus there after, even to the point of letting disciples leave his following because this teaching. It was hard to accept, but he doesn’t alter it because it disturbs many of his deciples. He even asks the apostles if they want to leave because of this teaching. Jesus spoke literally and that’s why this teaching was hard to except back then and still today for many Christian’s. If he was speaking symbolically or in parable, the teaching would then become very easy to except, but it’s not. This teaching is a test of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.
