An easy answer Why we take Hamas figures seriously. 1. They don't. The premise is a lie. Actually the media always say they are quoting Hamas. 2. Hamas are the only body counting. Israel has already admitted to not knowing how many civilians are dead, they only count the terrorists. 3. Hamas figures in the many past conflicts have been broadly accurate after the dust settles, even being accepted by Israel. 4. Israel forbids independent observers, like the media or aid organisations to enter and verify the numbers. So it would be reasonable to quote Hamas at this stage. Hamas might be terrorists, but Israel has convicted terrorists in its government, and have been called an illegal occupation for decades now. Under the eyes of the international community, the Israeli government is a rogue state breaking laws and committing war crimes. To believe them would be just as silly, given that they are worse than Hamas, and not even counting the numbers!

The normal death rates, even in the UK is 1.2%, so in Gaza with lower standards of health 25,000 deaths in a population of 2.2 million would be normal over 9 months without any deaths from conflict. After adding the 9,000 "Hamas militants" killed in conflict that means remarkably few innocent Gazans have actually died. Hamas makes no distinction between all deaths but certainly the Red Cross, and its presenter, should. Also "children" is defined by anyone under 18 where Hamas used 15-18 year olds in their war with Israel.
