I’ll be honest this was useless. Terms like screen don’t help the lay person. You actually never got the reason why.

It would be nice if we could see "the Screen"

Yup, what the heck is a screen?

The noise actually comes from you as our bodies are electromagnetically conductive. When you touch the pole pieces or the not-yet-connected screen wire, you extend the electromagnetic interference your body has absorbed very close to the circuit and the noise gets way louder as it gets picked up more easily by the circuit. That "screen" you mention in the video is actually a second ground wire that goes braided around the hot and ground wires of the pickup to shield them from electromagnetic interference, but most importantly it is attached to the backplate of the pickup where the pole pieces touch. By grounding that screen, you now have grounded the pole pieces so any interference will go to ground instead getting picked up by the coil. The pole pieces will still pick up the signal produced by the strings which distort their magnetic field much more severely.
