Nikon's are made to be handled by astronauts (flagship bodies). So the chances of seeing a Sony or Canon body is very unlikely in the foreseeable future. That also includes the lenses Nikon creates which are better for astronauts to handle (because they actually make input). List of mods Nasa made for the Z9 Firmware: Nikon and NASA collaborated to create custom firmware that accounts for the lunar environment, including cosmic radiation, noise reduction, and other factors. Electrical components: The camera's electrical components were modified to minimize issues caused by radiation. Thermal blanket: NASA created a thermal blanket to protect the camera from dust and extreme temperatures. Grip: NASA engineers developed a custom grip with modified buttons for easier handling by astronauts wearing thick gloves. Lenses: Nikkor Z lenses were modified for the mission. File naming: The file naming sequence was adjusted. Default settings: Default camera settings were tweaked. In-camera communication: In-camera communication control was modified to account for an astronaut's workflow. Shutter shield: Shutter shield tweaks were made. HDR: Enhanced HDR functionality was added.

Nikon are still the best pure photography cameras and lenses, pretty simple. Surely not the pinnacle of the recent hybrid craze.

Nasa will not use Hasselblad cameras from now on cause DJI bought Hasselblad and the USA has a law where no government agencies can use products from Chinese companies. That is why Nasa is not using Hasselblad cameras anymore. Great video as usual!!!

NASA isn't the only government agency to shoot with Nikon... Canadian and United States military shoot with Nikon and Nikon even sponsors a ton of airshows. Plus several police forces use Nikon cameras. Plus Disney has a contract with Nikon to supply all their cameras at both Disneyland and Disneyworld

apollo 15 was one of the longest moon missions. it landed on the moon. everything from apollo 11 and on landed on the moon. they are using nearly stock nikons on the ISS which endure heavy radiation exposure and still keep working. nearly every kind of government org uses nikon in some way so this sotry really comes as no surprise!

Don't forget in the early 2010s, it was very logical for NASA to choose the D3 and D3s series for the ISS crew, as it had the best ISO performance at the time.

Nikon's moved away from F mount now but I bet you it's still a lot easier to adapt all their existing Nikon/Nikkor gear to new Nikon cameras. Especially as their working with Nikon. I'd imagine Sony or Canon would stipulate that Nasa would have to buy such such a number of lenses and etc and without any of the experience Nikon has making/adapting stuff for outer space

You'd think people would know that Nikon makes glass for other brands 😅 Also Nikon sensors are from Sony. The short reason is they've had the contract for decades, they literally make the best glass especially for scientific purposes.

@@LizziePeirce I’m aware that you worked with them. I work with them constantly. Including at this specific moment. But still it’s very annoying and misleading. If they chose a Sony camera you would have never “done research” to why they chose Sony. But I will be completely honest. I understand that Nikon goes to bigger creators because they want their brand out there but I don’t understand why they continue to send stuff to people that do things like this in their spare time. But that’s the end of my rant.

Curious if you would have thought “why _____” insert other brand like sony or canon, if nasa was taking their camera to moon. Was it just curiosity or sometype of negative connotation associated with Nikon? If I had to pick a rugged camera for NASA it would be the Z9. There’s literally no hybrid camera that’s better for both photo and video in my opinion.

Omg almost forgot. Probably a small reason to the avg. person but, Nikon actually has the best organization of files. Their filing system is top notch. With Nasa taking probably north of 8 million images by now to archive. I think Sony still has terrible filing. If I'm not mistaken so does Canon and a few others. Also, now that they build the GPS in the body, as well as another small thing, but the internal clock is very good. Especially in past camera bodies when compared to any other brand. I'd assume 99% of NASA image files, are Nikon. People think 2mp files are a waste, but not when you're in space trying to send files back quickly with the same quality as a full size jpeg/raw. The NASA photographers have talked about this b/c they need to work. Being in front of a computer screen processing raw files is not something they look forward to doing. They'll send the Raw files back to Earth, but many times the NASA images we all see are barely touched.

Great video. I'm a Nikon guy. Went from Sony to Canon to Nikon, and I love it more than the others. Reading some of the comments, I have to agree with some of them. Just got the feeling you felt annoyed talking about them. If they are great cameras, then not sure why you don't do more content on them. You did business with them, but it did not go well, and that is why you never really do content about them? 🤔 Anyways! Love your content will continue to always watch.

"Okay we have just enough weight headroom for the rocks we've gathered and, of course, the cameras. These are historical artifacts, we have one for the Smithsonian, and one we promised to send back to Hasselblad." I found a rock that that looks like a Stegosaurus! "Okay, well... we'll ditch the camera for Hasselblad. They can borrow the other one." This rock'll probably skip real good across a pond. "Right. Ditch the cameras."

Like all government agencies they go with the lowest bidder or whoever gives the largest kickback to the congress members in their home state. No other reason and to think there is makes you foolish. Oh and BTW they originally used Hassleblads back when they cared about using the best of everything.

i’ve been taking photos for 40 years 20 years as a pro, and yet never developed (SWIDT?) nor cultivated this fancrapschtick and puerile mentality about any one particular brand. I just love using cameras. I have favourites but they’re not brand related , ie I have a favourite Nikon. I have a favourite Canon I have a favourite Olympus and I have a favourite Pentax and a favourite Fujifilm, a Sigma, a Kodak vintage, and I keep them because they are useful. Even if I could choose one camera to rule them all it wouldn’t be because of the brand it would be because of what the camera does + because of how it would be useful to my desired result. Every camera has idiosyncratic qualities. My first digital camera was a Nikon and then a Canon. It could just as easily have been the reverse. It’s just the Nikon came along at the right price. I still use both to this day, and never could figure why people make camps and talk sht 😂
