The whole bait and switch thing they did with the Scott Pilgrim anime was abhorrent and should be considered illegal. Yeah the creator said it was different from the comics/movie but not everyone follows or pays attention to creators' social medias. It's very slimy to advertise it as a complete adaptation of the comics/movie and then when it comes out, it's all different. That's false advertising and it's ILLEGAL to false advertise.

I honestly think the Netflix executives don’t realize what doomed circle they created. Shows get cancelled all the time -> people stop starting to watch smaller, less known shows bc they will get canceled anyway -> show doesn’t meet the numbers -> gets cancelled …. I for myself can genuinely say that my Netflix consumption has gone down A LOT due to this. I rarely just go and start to watch random shows, bc I don’t want to get invested in them. But even big titles like Shadow& Bone don’t seem to be safe so ….. guess those will slowly die down too

That's not why they're getting cancelled. We're doing this because we know they get cancelled. They get cancelled because their system is built on new subscribers and their first watches, they also look at media so how much promo a show gives for new subscribers, not how well a show has done. A show can get Emmys and be popular and will still get cut.

Netflix lost me when they renewed The Society for a S2, only for them to cancel it 2 weeks away from filming s2. While their crew was already setting up things in Massachusetts, and the cast had their flights booked. They found out online that Netflix canceled them. Netflix blamed Covid. YET, Outer Banks got to film their S2 2 months later. We would have waited to film The Society. Netflix screwed the entire cast and crew and their fans on that one. And I'll NEVER be over it. Lockwood and Co was brilliant. I literally bought all 5 books after seeing just 3 episodes, and after finishing both the books and the series I found an event with Jonathan Stroud (the author) in my country and bought tickets. Such a fantastic story, it was devastating to find out it was cancelled - especially since the show would have needed only 3 seasons max to cover all the books. It's like they forget audiences GROW over time. Nobody watched Succession season 1 when it came out, but fast forward 3 years and everyone's talking about it! They need to give these shows a chance! And I'm still salty over Anne with an E being cancelled, one of the best shows in the past decade.

With Lockwood and Co and Shadow & Bone, we have an incredible fandom and cast and making one or two incomplete seasons just to pull the plug is devastating. Netflix's cancellation model is really annoying for consumers too. there's a constant pressure to watch something as soon as it comes out, or risk it simply being cancelled. If your job or life doesn't allow you a ton of time to watch stuff, you have to be selective, and sometimes that means waiting until you hear some buzz around a show, and you simply CAN'T do that with Netflix cause by the time there's buzz, the show's fate has been decided.
@flamemasterelan
@flamemasterelan Жыл бұрын
That's not a Netflix thing, that's a media thing. Of course you have to watch something when it comes out. It was the same way with watching shows on network TV, where you (or more specifically, people who signed up for the Nielsen ratings program) would have to tune in week-to-week to their shows, or else risk their ratings drop, which could mean cancellation. If anything, the current subscription model is more forgiving, since you can watch your shows outside of the "prime time" broadcasting block and there's a window of time that they're watching the show, instead of just "the night it premiered," like it used to be. The Netflix model obviously has its issues, as Alex said. Dropping all 8 episodes in one night is great if your show is Stranger Things and you become a smash hit. But it doesn't allow you the chance to really build buzz or a following. Even Netflix has started to see that by now, based on how they delayed the final 2-ish episodes of the latest season of Stranger Things so they could have a few weeks of people talking about the reveal 3/4 of the way through.

The fact that there are a handful of media websites saying that Netflix is claiming that a reason they cancelled "Shadow & Bone" was because of the strikes was what I immediately thought when the WGA and SAG were striking. The real reason is because they are reducing spending on projects to adopt a model similar to TV, a lot of competition and lifestyle shows that don't require writing, acting or special effects that cost $$$. It's ridiculous - and to know that they're going to open brick & mortar locations (physical stores) for Netflix experiences is moronic!

Also, they completely rushed through the story told in the books and completely nose dived away from them. They pulled a Percy Jackson. I’ve read the books, and was so extremely optimistic from the first season. One season, one book, and they only missed some worldbuilding aspects that they didn’t explain and started focusing a little more on side characters. Cool, cool, I can vibe with this. But then they rushed books 2 and 3 into one season, so they didn’t properly explore either, ruined the ending to the books, and sidelined the main characters. So they ruined the story, themes, worldbuilding, pacing, and had no where left to go other than their own “creative vision”.

There is a twisted truth to that statement though, even if it's disingenuous. Technically the strikes did affect the show due delaying productions for months. I think most of us are doing it for the crows spin off, because it has a huge fandom, but it can't happen without seasin 3, a season that was supposed to have the six of crows plot which is hugely popular and best rated in the YA book community. Season 2 might have been rushed and totally different from the books, but it doesn't mean the show doesn't deserve a second chance. They did everything right with the Crows.

Lockwood and Co is actually a 5-book series. I am a huge fan but had no idea that the show even released until I accidentally discovered it on Netflix (and then binged). The acting was amazing, especially because it was the actor of lock woods first time acting, the story was great and enticing , the special effects were so good and the mysteries were all there but very subtle. Ultimately though it wasn't strong enough to justify 2 more seasons (the show was planned as a trilogy). Damn shame as it was SO well made. It was everything what Lock & Key should've been but never could become. Felt so bad for Ruby (actress that played Lucy) because she turned down her role on Bridgerton and recasted her for this show only to end up like this. Her character on Bridgerton was at some point going to be a lead (probably), but she made a risky bet and didn't pay off.

It didn't even have a chance, especially since it was released a week before "Wednesday" and there's no way to compete with that show That being said, I cancelled my prescription shortly after they cancelled 1899. Back then I also watched the first season of Shadow and Bone because I liked the books and I feel incredibly bad for all the fans right now. Same shit different year

I have heard Netflix have an algorithm which calculate the ratings over the first 3 episodes, if they fail to reach a target, the series is cancelled. If the BBC did this years ago, Only Fools & Horses, the most successful British comedy series ever, would not have survived a second season, as the first suffered poor rating. The problem is, for one thing, shows take a while to develop, and people may not be aware of them initially, plus, no one wants to invest in a Netflix series, because they don't want to be left on a cliffhanger, when the show is cancelled. The most stupid thing is, a lot of shows Netflix bill as trending, and must watch, are shows they have cancelled.

Lockwood and Co cancellation literally broke my heart. I have been a huge fan of the books and was eagerly awaiting the show. And it was one of the best book adaptations I've seen in recent times, you can see the respect for the source material shining through in the show. And they've improved upon it as well. They've removed some of the annoying elements in the books and replaced it with better ones in the show. To have it cancelled after one season, citing low viewership of all things (when we all know that it has good numbers) was just the most gut wrenching thing to me as a book fan.

I discovered Lockwood & Co. this week! For those who are wondering, it’s basically Sherlock Holmes as a teenage ghost hunter. And I just happened to stumble across it. I had no idea that it even existed - and I was confident that it’d get a second season. It’s not on the same level as the BBC Sherlock Holmes (seasons one and two), but it’s a solid watch. It’s fun, a bit campy, and the premise is surprisingly unique. I personally like it better than Stranger Things. It’s also MUCH better than most of the mediocre garbage on Netflix.

That and the fact it got absolutely NO promotion. I only found it because I occasionally check there ‘coming soon’ tab and spotted it, thought it looked interesting and let the trailer play.
