You are one of the best communicators on here imo...first channel I've watched in a while where I don't fastforward through the boring bits...I use delay's all the time, never really thought about using them consciously like this...most of the time it's throw it on and play with it till it sounds right...I only use that math for reverb times...you make me realise there's so much I DON'T think about that I maybe should start paying more attention to.

Thank you so much Jeremy. Super glad I could help you think from a different angle. But by the same token there's no 'wrong' way to do art (despite what bad habits school ingrained into us). As long as you're making music and having fun that's all that matters! I'm just one of those types that likes to uncover the science behind it all I suppose.

I stumbled upon your channel a few days ago and I couldn't be happier. You are without a doubt an excellent communicator and you have a way of conveying information in a way that makes it very easy for others to understand, I also love that you dig into the subtleties of things and break it down so that people can see it in a different way or just see it (in case they have missed it before). Your way of teaching reminds me a little of Rick Snoman, another amazing guy. Anyway, thank you so much for what you do. ❤

I have kicks from all over the place. When you've been doing it for 15 years they all just go in a folder haha. I've got lots of packs and swapped and shared some with other producers and engineers. If you saw my first live stream I go over how I use the plugin XO by XLN to pick my kicks by ear. because of that I don't usually end up knowing which kick I used!

@@Bthelick First of all, thank you for answering me. And I feel you, I really understand the "Oh, that's a kick, where's the kick folder..." and drop it there... But, in this case, WOW. Of course, it's not the first kick in your videos that made me open my eyes a bit wider... ...and yes, I can't afford XO program and I got the Waves one when it was released... ...almost free (less than 10 bucks, as I can remember). But I rarely use it. Anyway, I'll try to grab one from the video and try to mimic it on Kick 2... ...but it seems to me that, from the start, it has some kind of "stereo-izing" trick there... Thanx a lot for the tips!!!!!! ...and, Oh, BTW, I'm a little bit older than House "Chicago Traxx" (and MasterMix 5, DJ International, so, when you turned those delays off, sometimes I must confess that I like it... :-))) Maybe those delays would be part of a track's "variable"... Thanx once again...
@Bthelick
@Bthelick Жыл бұрын
Yeah I suppose the point I was trying to make was just to pick by ear. If it had a stereo effect that was purely by accident, I normally mono kicks. Nice to hear you're an OG! Yeah those days were certainly dry only having 1 or 2 sends available for the whole track, and something that would varied on the fly for interest. It's definitely got it's own vibe which is still legit.

@Bthelick
@Bthelick Жыл бұрын
You don't 'have' to use any particular type. Over time you'll get a feel for the subtle differences but in general you either need real space, or just 'wetness'. Real space is more common on real sounds as real sounds can sound alien when not in a real space (our ears and the way we balance irl is based on wall reflections) . In general real space moves sounds away from you (like pushing them into a room) and fake-verb usually adds length to sound. Changing timbre and groove. The only other thing you need to listen for is the context of the track, busy tracks need far less reverb , shorter reverb, or even none at all. Long reverbs take up space and soften/chill out a sound (generally) . I don't usually have any rules for length I've always adjusted by ear, but I'm at the stage where i know what I'm looking for before I start. Just keep experimenting, tweaking, having fun and learning you'll pick it up eventually. Oh and of course; reference more!

Question: How to handle swing patterns and a 1/16 delay. Do not get my head around this issue, because the repetitions are not landing on the grid and/or swing positions. Result is always a messy groove.
@Bthelick
@Bthelick Ай бұрын
yes great question! any odd number delay will not line up with a swung groove. you can get around this by making a rack from 2 separate delays. for 1/16th you leave a normal 8th delay in there, then for the 2nd 'line' in parallel, have a single 1/16th tap and then another normal 8th delay. you can then offset the 2nd line in time with ANOTHER single tap delay but set to milliseconds for the swing amount. IF that doesn't make sense let me know I'll make a video and give away the rack.

Hi, I’m really getting a lot from your videos. I am struggling with the placement of MIDI notes to create dotted notes. Ableton doesn’t have an option to set the grid to dotted. Your hybrid bass/leads is evading me too because of this. Really need some further help. You are filling a huge creative gap in YT content and it is appreciated.
@Bthelick
@Bthelick Жыл бұрын
Hey no problem. Dotted isn't a different timing like triplets, it still occurs on the straight grid (meaning not triplet grid) "Dotted" means just the listed note length + 1 half. So a dotted 8th is an 8th plus half-an-8th (a 16th) , in other words = 3x16ths. So on a 16th grid a dotted 8th is drawn as 3 16ths apart.

Question, why is groove/ shuffle never discussed with delays?
@Bthelick
@Bthelick Жыл бұрын
Great question. Most delays don't account for it. It would mean having irregular timed repeats on dotted or 16th repeats otherwise the fixed distances in normal delays will fall out of time. Someone should make one eh! You can achieve it with programmable tap delays like chow matrix but I'm not aware of any that can follow swing automatically.
