What I like is that Judy's biases were not super overt. She was not someone shouting "Yo, I'm racist" from the rooftops. She wasn't even someone who would say "I'm not racist...but...", the way her parents were. She thought of herself as someone progressive, someone open minded, yet she was blind to her own bias.

Yeah,it's interesting because most of her bias were because of trauma and lack of thinking

i really love that character flaw because it’s extremely realistic. there’s so many people out there who believe they’re progressive but as soon as it slightly affects their life or have any presence in it they suddenly start having second thoughts. i love her character development in the movie.

I think we need to see more of that in film. Society doesn't realize that prejudice isn't always an explicit thing, and not everyone who has it is necessarily a bad person. Everyone has bias in some regard whether or not we acknowledge it. I think Judy's case was one of ignorance, rather than malice. I'm just upset that it took a Disney cartoon to explain to people that there's nuance to these things more often than not. I think Zootopia's message was about how perspective can be a real eye opener, and that people are brought together by sympathizing with each other's struggles, which is the first step to change.

Zootopia did a lot for me after a long depression and I was going to see it twice before it finished in the UK. My theory is that zootopia is usually associated with furries and people made a stereotype out of it: "Oh, you're a furry? Then you must like Zootopia smh", which in turn made a great film that happened to have animals, into something negative...

By that logic shouldn't movies like lion King also be considered a furry movie?? Edit: actually now that I think about it, it's probably because zootopia animals are more humanoid. But still, pretty dumb reason for people to hate on a movie.

You hit the nail right in the head by stating how non-musicals are always left in the background in comparison to the big musicals with high replay value. Not only that, but Zootopia didn't get all that much promotion outside of its original 3 year cycle post release the way movies like Moana or Frozen do because well, it's a "difficult" franchise to push in comparison to the princess . Toy Story or Frozen lines. At any rate, I think I'd rather have small circles talking about Zootopia than to have it be downplayed for being "overrated" and "oversaturated" which always happens to the musicals (Frozen, Tangled, Moana, Encanto, etc.). Sadly, because of the entire cop situation in the US, I highly doubt we will be getting Zootopia 2 anytime soon despite it having been in development for several years now.

I wouldn't say Zootopia isn't talked about, but rather overlooked due to the overwhelming popularity of other Disney movies like you mentioned. To this day, there's still an active fanbase writing Zootopia fanfiction and drawing artwork, but I think the enthusiasm might be starting to fade slightly because of how little new content is being made. It's hard to keep fans excited when there's nothing to look forward to other than a Disney+ spinoff series. As a result, there just isn't that much to talk about that hasn't already been said at this point, so the initial hype for the movie has died down since it came out back in 2016.

I know what you're saying and although I've never looked, I've always assumed that movies like Frozen, Tangled, etc have bigger and more active fandoms due to their apparent popularity, but I could be wrong as I feel those movies were aimed at a younger audience and thus the interest could wane sooner. There is however the mould breaker in MLP, but I'm not going anywhere near that ;) Looking forward to Zootopia+ if they can't get around to Z2...

Zootopia is still among the top tier of Disney animated films as far as appreciation goes. It is always in trending on Disney+, excet when they for some reason onlys howed the to trending TV shows and cut out the movies entirely around the time Black Widow came out and for like two months afteward. But when they don't do that, Zootoia is always in trending, AND furthermore, it is one of first two WDAS roeprties to receive a Disney+ show, the first being Big Hero 6. They are not going to give those to anything but top tier or second to tier stuff for awhile. I would say Princessa nd the Frog goes in the second tier, not from myr ankings but how I've seen it. I think there's four tiers, Top Popular, Mid Popular, Sort of Talked About, and Bottom Not Very Much Mentioned. Maybe five tiers actually but still.

I still remember this movie, and I’ll say that it’s the best modern Disney animated movie with such a great message that teaches us that we can all live peacefully together, no matter our race, gender, herbivore, or carnivore. I feel like this movie did a much better job at teaching us about not being racist than what Pocahontas did. And the characters in this movie were so memorable. The only issue I have with this movie is obviously its twist villain “Bellwether” , but regardless, everything else about this movie was so beautiful, phenomenal, and heartwarming :’)💞

Frozen is the best movie period but not because of Elsa, because of Princess Anna of Arendelle, the number one character in all of anything, who Disney disrespected in the so-called sequel and basically marred the franchise going forward. Definitely worst theater moment when Anna literally does something the character would never do, and which the movie you're currently watching itself expressed this. All they had to do was bring in another character, this so-called Samantha, to fill that role, she could've been Elsa's new best friend that Anna was worried she was losing her sister to, and then Samantha saves the day, Elsa is restored, and Elsa and Anna decide to live together in the woods, would've been a nice ending, instead they chose to SEPARATE them and basically be as evil as Disney ever could be, not even understanding why Frozen is popular int he first place. And that Oalf's Frozen Adventure that Frozen haters complained about being in front of Coco? That was written by someroen who isn't Jennfier Lee, who actually UNDERSTANDSA why Frozen is such an amaazing movie. WDAS has somewhat redeemed themselves with Raya and the Last Dragon and Encanto, but the fact that the same studio made the best movie ever and the worst sequel ever for the same franchise is wild.

@@keysburntgucci9016 By being absolutely obvious as the villain and being so simply for the sake of a surprise twist rugpull. Disney has lately been rather indirectly insulting to the intelligence of movie-goers by thinking that having an oh-so sweet and adorable character do an Uno reverse in the last five minutes with no buildup or context is somehow good writing. It's especially obvious when they keep having the secretly character randomly appear and given a tiny bit of focus but ultimately do nothing, making it clear they're being saved up to be the surprise plot-twist big bad evil person.

I think the reason why it isn't talked so much is because how much it relates so much in real life. Despite being talking animals it really is the closest thing to being real life and because of that it kinda makes people uncomfortable talking about it because the problems they had in the movie is the very same problem we deal with in our every day life. To put it simply the movie hits too close to home.

I agree with you. I think it's not as popular as it once was because it is not a musical, and I do like the movie, but the twist at the end was uncalled for. It just happened rather than having points in the movie show that the sheep could have been a twist villain.

@@turbok.o.3324 The twist villain in Toy Story 2 was far better than what Zootopia and Incredibles 2 did. It's very lazy writing that plagued Disney for a while after Frozen came out. It was a dark time when Disney relied on twist villains as a crutch (including Coco).

I personally HATE this movie. It's not just one of the most boring animated films, but also one the worst films by Disney with a predictable and uninteresting story, animation that looks nice yet kind of unoriginal, a cast of forgetably dull characters, and one of the most unlistenable songs for a movie soundtrack.

I think, its lack of visibility is caused by the film itself, it's a moovie that tacle so many social behavior of socity, mostly american (US) socity. And why would people speak about a moovie wicht tacle at times their own social behavior. In a nutshell, despite his kids and bubbly aspect, this moovies is to reel. And speaking about it is saying that this behavior exist and they do. But "people" prefer to evade themselve with music and dream than going all out against other people behavior or their own.

*Another reason:* Disney dropped the ball with marketing. With movies like Frozen and Moana and others: Disney CRAMMED merchandise and relevance down your throat. You couldn't go anywhere without seeing a girl dressed as a princess, a kid without a backpack, or everything else. Disney struck gold with this movie but never exploited its success.

I have another theory regarding Zootopia. A significant portion of the profits from the film was made from Asian countries. Of course I don’t know exactly how much, but by looking up merchandise from Shanghai Disneyland or Tokyo Disney, you can see it definitely has a presence there. Heck, Shanghai is even getting their own Zootopia section of the park. In most other places, Zootopia is sidelined by Disney in favor of other films, typically the princess franchise. If you visit Disney World or Disneyland it is significantly difficult to find any merchandise or a presence of Zootopia at all. I visited in 2019 and all I found at the time was 2 trading pins. Unfortunately I don’t know when Disney is going to realize that we outside of Asia really enjoy Zootopia too!

I think the future of Zootopia will be decided by how the upcoming animated series is received by fans. If it is to be as successful as I hope, then I believe nothing will stop Disney from investing further in this franchise. I love this movie very much and I hope with all my heart to see a sequel in a few years that can introduce new districts and new characters. Furthermore, I would like to see the evolution of Nick and Judy's relationship because they have such chemistry that it would be a real shame not to use it for plot purposes. Those two look too good together!

I totally agree with your point! No one was talking about Encanto until they could stream it again and again, and rehear Brunos song. Most disney musicals have that rewatchability that you can let the movie go in loop in the background while you do chores and stuff. Songs make a movie more memorable in the long run, and being remembered everytime they put a disney playlist to hear.

People talk a lot less about this movie because a lot of Americans found out the hard way that police depts across the US are hugely racist, corrupt and heavily militarized. I specifically like that you pointed out how the message of the movie doesn’t exclusively refer to racism or sexism like most reviewers at the time would be saying all over the place, but that it refers to prejudice as a whole. That prejudice could come from anyone, anywhere, and for any reason and it’ll effect people or whole societies if you let them run amok. You could sort of compare it to Pride and Prejudice in that regard.

Thank you for addressing this problem. It shocks me how successful this film is, but Disney doesn’t bother to treat it like the other Walt Disney Animation Studios films that came before and after. Sure things like Moana or Frozen get more attention because of how easily marketable they are cuz OOH Disney Princess movies, but when you look at stuff like Wreck it Ralph or Big Hero 6. Those aren’t your typical Disney Princess musical movies, yet some how even those have gotten more than Zootopia. They still get more merch to this day than Zootopia, Ralph got a sequel (which was wasted potential and was trash), and Big Hero 6 got a full series. I want Zootopia+ to be the hope and change that Disney will give some love to this franchise again, but with how little it’s being teased or advertised, I’m not even sure anymore. Zootopia’s success and even more so the ongoing issues out in the world that fits Zootopia’s subject matter really well, I think they totally warrant a sequel. There’s so much potential to make the second movie more exciting, fun, emotional, and hard hitting than the first, and I really want Disney to finally do something with it. The excuse that they don’t want it to be “too dark” is total ass when you’ve got so many older and even newer movies that can be even darker. Let Zootopia 2 push the boundaries. This is my favorite movie for many reasons and I really hope more can come from it in the future after Zootopia+…

I think Zootopia was mostly forgotten because it presented a product with rather woke messages, during an age where everything is saturated with wokeness. Despite this trend not being as prevalent in 2016 as it is now, I do remember these points about the movie to be discussed back then. Disney had a very compelling concept, yet felt the need to inject manmade, and often one sided societal issues, into a fantasy metropolis inhabited by anthropomorphic animals. I find that such storylines stike as very preachy and judgemental, as if reprimanding the viewers for a crime they never commited. It is tedious, and sucks all the fun out of it, which is the number one criteria needed for casual Disney/cartoon fans to sit down and watch a movie. To my assessment, people pick up on that, which might explain one of the reasons why Zootopia became quickly overlooked, despite its initial success. Overall, my opinion is that Zootopia was a product of its time and will not age terribly well, but only the future will tell.

Interesting theory. Although, I'd argue that Zootopia hasn't been talked about in recent years because the topic of racism and social bias is still an uncomfortable thing to talk about. I know, crazy idea, considering that social bias and how to overcome them is literally the whole message of the movie, but bear with me for a moment. Think about what's happening these days, with all these social movements like BLM and Ukraine under siege, and how everyone is treating each other in response to these events, at least the vocal few on social media. If racism wasn't an uncomfortable topic then, it definitely is now. Zootopia is truly a masterpiece, taking a message would rather not hear and deliver in a palatable and enjoyable way. I just wish the greatness wasn't overshadowed by the message being difficult to address. It seems that we have to overcome the stigma of talking about social bias before overcoming social bias. Then again, this is just a theory, and I have been wrong before...

Amazing movie! The chances of getting a sequel are pretty low, just because of what is happening in society. With White cops being racist and the whole Black Lives Matter issue, trigger happy cops abusing power and putting their foot on Black people throats. I thought after this movie we were over racism, then here we go again. That this and Black Panther movie will do some good and inspire and cause awareness. Then China manufactures Covid-19 and people become racist to Chinese people for starting the pandemic, then Russia invade Ukraine and now we see Russians as invaders and we get the message that China and Russia are bad, all communist brain washed people. It puts a bad taste and colours people through generalization. So yeah we won't get a Zootopia 2 because it will stir contraversey, I mean 343i even removed a red and blue siren nameplate in Halo Masterchief Collection. We still live in a sick world, with sick people, in a sick society.

Zootopia is and still remains as my FAVORITE disney movie of all time. Like everything you've mentioned, Zootopia has such a great story, amazing visuals, great character development, and the story is honestly really unique. It's weird, but Zootopia is hardly ever marketed like in disney stores which I find strange since they're all animals, it would be easy to make stuffed toys of the characters. Zootopia is great because is doesn't just cater to children, but it does have adult-like humor that is still enjoyable for kids. Such as Nick's tax evasion or the joke about sloths working at the DMV is something adults can relate to. I hope that Zootopia will gain the popularity it deserves, especially since a sequel is now in the works!

I personally can't stand musicals. I find the whole affair completely pointless and a waste of time. Let's relegate what needs to be told on good character writing to a song... Great... I can't be the only one who feels like this, so I doubt Zootopia not being a musical is the reason why it's being forgotten. Toy Story, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Monsters Inc, these aren't musicals either, but they're remembered really well.

Gotta love that editing! Sometimes it nearly felt like what you said was kinda lip synced by the characters on screen. Their actions fit to what was said, and so stuff like you saying Zootopia's soundtrack can't compete to the catchy score's of other titles, while showing Judy taking her breath after a long run. This attention to detail is so cool yet so subtle. But it makes for a really fun watch and is so much better than random scenes stitched together or just playing the same trailer footage over and over again. So chapeau! for going the extra mile here; it's much appreciated :)

I think Zootopia would've done better with a "good vibes" montage somewhere. Just one. Even short. Like, think about the montage between Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver in Treasure Planet-when the two of them go out for a ride on that sloop, it's such good character chemistry with a FIRE soundtrack, y'know? And Zootopia, while funny, didn't have much light-heartedness in it. I might be wrong-it's been a long time since I watched it, after all-but that's how it feels in my memories. The character chemistry is my favorite though, and I forgive many, MANY things for the sake of character chemistry.

I think that Zootopia was famous mainly because of the time and context. But with society's constant change, the message got a bit muddy. For example, many people have noticed that putting "the predators" as a minority and blaming "the prey" for fearing them (because they would literally EAT them in the past) might bring up some... let's say unfortunate conclusions. Like for example, one could equate predators to a certain race group that's usually associated with violence, and say "welp, I'm justified to think this way, because they are the predators, they are violent".

It's an incredible film. One of my favorites ever tbh.. But my theory is this, it has amazing characters, great development, an impactful and inspiring message but maybe just maybe because it was based around taking animals that's why it didn't stand out. Frozen had Olaf, a more original type of character but Idk for sure if that played a role because a film like The Lion King is still so talked about many years later. I also agree with your point about how it not being a musical impacted it's staying power. Musicals now have been selling good.. think of the Sing films so I agree with your point there too. Nonetheless, I just truly love Zootopia. It is a moving film with great animation and very important social messaging.

Random hypothesis, since zootopia has a fraction of the merchandization that Frozen, Toys Story, Cars, the Incredibles, ect had, then 1. Disney is disincentifised from airing it as frequently vs movies which have the potential to increase merch sales 2. We aren't reminded of it because there aren't as many toys/branded cereals floating around to make us go "oh yeah that was a thing that happened"

And We already know from the creators that there were lots of ideas that didn't make it to the final movie - background stories, original plots, some additional characters, jokes, etc. So ofcourse I desperately want to see a Zootopia sequel, but I don't want one if it's just a cash-grab like Toy Story 4 or Frozen 2.

i just assumed it was because disney didn't see is as franchiseable or marketable so they don't even bother bringing it up themselves, especially when you compare it to their merchandising licensing juggernauts like their princesses. Which not only makes big passive revenue but the properties is also super easy to convert into attractions and parks. as well as making it relatively easy for them to turn them into live action in the future so thats some future proving. likely why Raya got some flak from the South East Asian community as it really looked like it was a thinly veiled attempt to cash in on their culture without committing to anything, while theyre hiring almost exclusively east asian to do all the voices, songs, producing and etc. plus the themes of the movie is kinda dark and mature.

They still have active fanbases but there’s nothing to talk about because it’s not got new canon content so eventually there will be nothing to talk about other than fanmade stuff. These things just don’t get talked about once it’s been rinsed dry of content. If Zootopia had a sequel or show, it would be talked about again

While I can see the angle of Zootopia not being a musical, if that really was the case then why isn’t every single kids movie one then? I push back on this because there are other animated kid films that aren’t musicals that are still talked about today like Toy Story, Tarzan, Lilo & Stich, etc. For me, maybe it’s because since the movie focuses on humanoid animals, unfortunately it’s immediately lumped into the furry community. Nothing against them but like it or not there is a stigma and some in the fanbase have taken some things too far.
