My dog is called Otto too, he’s a bold miniature schnauzer with almost 2 and half years old. He is neutered and has some fear of big loud trucks, he does not like children but has never been physically aggressive to them, but he is loud, very vocal and often barks at strangers and has some leash reactivity as well… I can control it better then my family but I failed on eliminating it. He’s very nice though… very loving dog, playfull and funny. Sometimes I find it hard to understand his body language, I find it mostly dominant or tense, and how to react on it specially with him not being a big strong dog. I don’t understand how much physical I can get with corrections in order to correct bad behavior without making him fearful or agressive. Although I’m brazilian I would love to get a chance to meet you Joel. I really like your videos they help me understand dogs better every time I see them, keep up with the awesome work, cheers.

@@MeganMackinYikes! That sounds stressful. If they haven’t figured it out yet, I’d recommend that you pick one (ideally the one bigger or who seems most likely to come out on top) and feed that one first, give treats first, let it be the first one through the door. Any opportunity that you can find to show preference and reinforce the hierarchy, take it. I’ve heard that can help minimize challenges.

My own theory is that Prince let him get away with all of that, because he managed to detect what you stated later on in the video: "We've seen zero 'aggression', just a lot of dominance posturing." It's possible that Prince has learned by now that dominant dogs per se aren't the problematic ones, but aggressive ones are just never to be tolerated - I've seen him react very quickly to ones that tried to bite him through muzzles and such, but with this one it's just: "Eh...I get where this dog's coming from and it isn't that bad." For some reason or another yeah, it's not just Prince but all the other dogs that are for some reason okay with his brand of dominance. It's aggression they just immediately dislike, and rightfully so. For dominance they probably refer to their master as to what's expected or wanted, but yeah, it's still weird how quickly they all just accepted him despite it.

My friend is a dog trainer which has always had very well behaved great danes. One time he just bought a female puppy and we went with his older dog to a party. We met a bulldog which started barking furiously at the bigger dane and pulling on the leash. My friend's dog simply stood still and watched him. Enter the scene the small puppy, which goes straight walking at the bulldog and... Places his paw on top of his head. He stopped barking and by the end of the night the bulldog was doing the "drag me if you can" trick laying on the ground and weeping cause he didn't want to leave his new friends 😂😂😂

It just looks like Prince liked him and treated him like a little bro, just like any of us could vibe with the right person even if they lightly busted balls right off the bat. He seemed perky and his head shake was full body and playful after that first jump off. My dogs give sharp head shakes when announcing they are done and annoyed, and there will definitely be at least an open mouth (prince kept his firmly closed) and no play bowing. Even the way he trotted off later looked like Prince was inviting him to chase play for sure, and the inside the ear lick is what my girls do with a new puppy.

This video was so interesting to me because my girls do this to each other EVERY day. They are same age females and I understand that is potentially the most insecure combo, but I didn’t know the up on each other is bad. Honestly, every single day at least once, they’re up on each other in their play, they bite necks, play throw down and hump (always the same placement). But they seem to love their routine.. we’ve had 2 fights in 2 years (they’re 4). I’m not going to stop them at this point because they’re good with each other, but I didn’t know this getting up was bad
@krystal6137
@krystal6137 Жыл бұрын
In your case it’s not necessarily a bad thing because the dogs know each other and as long as they take turns being “dominant” during a play session it is absolutely normal dog play behavior to jump or hump. The problem with Otto jumping is that he jumps on every dog immediately upon meeting them for the first time which many dogs consider rude and on top of that he shows no interest in playing whatsoever- he just looks for the next opportunity to dominate them again. If allowed to continue this behavior when meeting a new dog he will eventually jump up on the wrong dog and it will turn into an aggressive incident. Otto is giving off major puppy vibes so the other dogs are being gentle with him and letting him get away with it but that grace won’t last forever. I would much rather see Otto learn to communicate with other dogs and learn to play and make friends than him constantly feeling he has to be the top dog no matter what. It’s up to the humans to teach him what is unacceptable, I’m guessing he was either a singleton and didn’t have a chance to play with any litter mates or that he was separated from his mother and other dogs early in life.

I've seen a lot of the same behaviors in my own dog (German shepherd). I got him at about 10 months old and I've had him for about 2½ years now. His previous family got him as a puppy and did *nothing* with him. He only ever met the other dog in the house and they didn't do any training. He was an insane ball of energy that wouldn't listen to anyone. They gave him to me because I started working with him and he started behaving better. There were still a lot of issues even after having him for 2 years that the methods I'd been trying (treats, etc) just weren't fixing. I've made more progress with him in the 6 months I've been watching your videos than I made in the whole 2 years prior. He's meeting people and not barking at them. He's walking loose leash (when I want him to; leash attaches to the head collar for walks, and the chest harness is for when I want him to pull). I've even gotten him meeting dogs now. He used to have a major problem with the (unaltered male) neighbor dog, but now they're getting together without fights (I was extremely tense when he ran over there and they were meeting face to face with neither muzzle nor leash). The biggest things is he has such anxiety. He starts drooling, whining, and pooping. He can poop before we leave the house, but going for a car ride, as much as he loves it, will cause him to poop. And I can't even pick it up because it's runny. Going on walks, I can walk him and our rottweiler side by with me, loose leash. Husband walks with us and he's got the rottie, and my dog loses his mind. Drooling, whining, going back to pulling, mincing his steps when I've done corrections and he's obviously conflicted between wanting to what he wants and paying attention to me. I probably walk twice as much as my husband because I end up doing a correction and turning around to walk the other direction until he's with me again. When he met with the neighbor dog that first time, he drooled so much the other dog looked like he'd had a bath. He also pooped 4 times, getting progressively runnier. I wish I had some clue how to help him. It kinda reminds me of the video with the dog you said has ADHD. I don't think it's behavior that can be corrected, but I don't know how to help him either. I really wish I could get your input, but a trip to California is out of the question.

Maybe you could try some canned pumpkin mixed with his food to bulk up his stool and Benadryl can slow gastric emptying as well as help a little with anxiety. I’m thinking if you try those before you know he will be in a stressful situation he can slowly acclimate his body to deal with the stress in other ways besides giving him diarrhea so eventually you won’t have to do the pumpkin and Benadryl. Both are considered safe for most dogs in proper doses but always consult your veterinarian regarding your dogs personal health.

The other body signal for the dominance was the height that dog carried his tail at. When he first met each dog and tried to dominate them, his tail was held almost straight up like a flagpole. After corrections or when he was calmer, his tail was coming flat off his back, horizontal to the ground. It’s a quick sign, from a distance, that I notice to judge a dog’s excitement and dominance level when out for a walk or at a dog park.
@Catbooks
@Catbooks Жыл бұрын
I thought this was an interesting comment, and wondered if I'd missed his tail height so watched it again. He doesn't change the height of his tail, when he meets dogs or after he's corrected. The vast majority of the time he's got it at 3/4s of the way up, his tail always slowly wagging in a relaxed way. I'll bet this is a piece of the puzzle why Prince and the other dogs thought he was fine. Kind of like the equivalent of a young oafish guy who bumps into people with a loose grin. No malice, so no threat and hey, kind of likeable! I do the same, watching tail position and its tension or looseness when gauging other dogs. It's helpful information.

I think you're spot-on, it was a combination of Prince knowing this dog is young, and just liking him, so Prince felt no need to correct him. I'm dealing with a similar situation with a young lab, and my dog is similar to Prince. Same thing, my dog likes him and wants to play with him, but the lab is now becoming dominant in exactly the same way this dog is. My dog will correct him when he goes too far (baring teeth, growling, barking and going after him), but the lab will only back off for a few seconds before doing it again. My dog won't escalate beyond that with him, because he likes him and knows he's young. The lab is now dominant and too much, but not aggressive and there's no ill intent. I intervene, partly because my dog has osteoarthritis in his elbow and I don't want him getting hurt, but the lab's owner is unfortunately clueless, and my dog won't escalate. I asked the lab's owner if he minded if I corrected, explaining about the osteoarthritis, and he said no, but I can tell he doesn't like it. But he doesn't know how to correct his dog himself. He will occasionally say in a conversational tone "Don't do that," but the dog has no idea what that means, he's inconsistent, and doesn't understand timing, either. The owner's go-to is avoidance, putting his dog on leash, which teaches him nothing, and so the problem continues. One day his dog is going to meet up with a dog that isn't balanced and forgiving, and it won't be pretty.
@hanksimon1023
@hanksimon1023 Жыл бұрын
I think you're right. If the Lab is a 'puppy' under 10 months old, then an adult may not correct him enough, and you'll have to protect your senior. But, it is simple enough to do, by putting the Lab on leash and asking him to Sit (Time -out) for about 30 seconds. If he will Sit off-leash that's OK. But, you want a brief time-out, to help him learn when he is playing too roughly or energetically. I have an 80 lb Lab mix that loves to run. I used the method above to help teach him to self-handicap more appropriately with dogs not as strong as him. He can now play actively and safely with most dogs, including a 10 lb. Chihuahua/ Dachshund mix!
@Catbooks
@Catbooks Жыл бұрын
@@hanksimon1023 The problem is the young lab isn't my dog. If he were, I know exactly what I'd do: Let them interact while lab is on leash, give leash and verbal corrections when he does it, praise/treat when he interacts or plays appropriately. When he's got it on leash, let him trail the leash and repeat if/when necessary. Consistently. Remove leash, repeat as needed with verbal correction. Really the same thing Joel did in this video, except he didn't get to the point of letting this dog off leash. But I can't do this because he's not my dog. Good work though with your dog.

My American Bulldog needs some training. 1. She won't move off the bed or lounge when told to and tries resisting even when pushing her off, she is extremly stubborn. How can I train her to move off when told to? 2. Another issue is we definitely think she was abused as a puppy before we got her. She gets worried when anybody speaks in a stern voice or for instance if someone watches sport and speaks in a negative tone about it. How can we get her more comfortable around people speaking in that tone of voice? 3. She is scared of any new objects and can get spooked by them, a plastic bag moving in the wind or if something fell off a table. How could we get her to not be as scared by this, I suspect they threw things at her. We are training her using your methods for walking which is going well as she used to pull, she also doesn't jump and is extremely well behaved at home. She is a super easy dog to look after, just wanna make her an excellent dog and those are the things she mainly has issues with. Otherwise im just getting her more socialized with other dogs to build her confidence up some more. She is extremely sooky or extremely happy I think its just her personality. The only other thing I can think of is I think she just breathes heavy and gets stressed easily if in trouble. Should that be something to be concerned about?

HA! Yeah right. The treats don't exist anymore, I don't exist anymore (in his mind). There is no treat high value enough to get my dog's attention when he's locked onto another dog. You can see the excitement level go to an 11 and you have to do something surprising/shocking to knock him out of that level of intensity.

If the dog is less than 10 months old, he may still have a puppy license to 'misbehave'. Puppies will nip to play, and may learn to hump as play. Given how Prince was reacting, I think Prince would have snarked him or corrected him, if he went too far. I trust Prince not to eat him, given how relaxed the interaction was. Aggressive playfulness sounds like the appropriate set of words. That first bit looked like he tried to hug Prince.😅 It feels like, as a person, if a baby or unknown toddler runs up to you and hugs you vs if an unknown adult runs up and hugs you. In one case, we get all gushy and squishy-maybe concerned because ‘where tf are the kid’s parents?’ and in the other, we’re probably considering violence or other forms of self preservation/protection.

But it goes back in forth.but if say his name he'll stop, he trs with my old pit/weimaraner mix too. When ruby gets feed up he pins him. So think this help when training rascal earlier. I feel like this was a situation of as if a kid comes up to you squaring up and is like 'you wanna fight??? you wanna fight? Look how tough I am' but they're scrawny and run away from you if you actually move in their direction so you just find it adorable and are like 'yeah yeah ok kiddo you are tough :)' and that was how the other dogs viewed Otto

Thank you for your videos! I wish I would’ve seen your videos earlier. We rescued an amstaff from the street at -20 °C, he wasn’t trained to walk on the leash, he was very dominant like this dog in the video, and because he was also young like a year and couple of months old, other dogs didn’t think of his pushiness as an aggression. The best thing we did for him is to meet and socialize with every dog we met, plus basic obedience, plus training commands. He became more calm, confident dog.

These videos are SO helpful to understand canine behavior! My girls don't really like to play with other dogs; they're not aggressive but they will snip at dogs who won't stop sniffing their butts, they don't like it lol. It can make me nervous, my ACD can be protective/unpredictable.

He's a charming dog. Prince didn't see it as threat and liked him because he knew it was a dog version of a "bro hug". He's one of those guys that like to go in for the hug after the handshake. 😂😂 He's a confident young one that loves to initiate the play.

In the video he doesn't show the dominant behavior towards the biggest Dog. Just at the same size or smaller dogs. He approaches these dogs playfully, like puppies approach each other. He smiles a lot. It's sort of a game prompt with dominant elements. I think If the dog were older, things might have turned out differently. He shows respect and more mature behavior towards the largest dog. Some dogs mature more slowly as others. There could be a mastiff in him. The Mastiff is a late developer.

i think this dog learned playing with other dogs wrong. i fostered a dog like this but he would also open his belly a lot too, he just wanted to have fun :) body language is dangerous because other dogs might react badly to this behavior, good correction. this behavior problem happens often when pup has no mother or siblings with them when they are young, so they never get corrected.

When I first saw one this trainer's videos I got the impression that he knew what he was doing but now I see it's mostly his dogs training the other dogs. With this specific video, the problematic dog didn't truly learn not to jump on any of the other dogs and the corrections weren't being applied properly even by the trainer. At the end, the trainer is trying to convince the clients that they "[should be] very happy" says it all.

Being a rescue if i had to guess id go w your initial hypothesis. Although he big that dog is super young. Id guess about under a year year and a half tops. And while that first interaction seems hyper dominant i honestly think hes just playing 100%. And prince probably knows that. Theres no threat, puppy playing. And also what ive gotten from strays or rescues is that theyve spent time w so many diff dogs that they have GREAT social skills and are excellent at reading the temperament of other dogs. So the puppy knows 5 secs in that prince is a great dog, prince knows the puppy is friendly so they're just playing rough right away. Actually super nice to see :) Watching the rest of it ive also seen some alpha dogs be super lenient w specific young males bc they see them as a potential partner. Like street dogs form pairs or trios of alphas, kinda like lion coalitions, for survival and dominance. Now obviously in a house dog park scenario that behaviour needs to be corrected but, i think prince instinctively sees the potential and acts accordingly. Also the puppy has super learned how to approach and show himself to alphas. The other dogs are nice bc they already recognize him as a future alpha. Sorry about the long text. Wonderful dog , agreed :)

Seems like they accepted his dominance because he's still a puppy to them despite his size. My dog will put up with rough play from bigger dogs that he's just met if they're still young, but if they're obviously older than him he's got zero tolerance and warns them off immediately.
