Thanks again Joel & team! Today was huge for Thunder & I in terms of trust and getting to know his nature. With my newfound confidence in him, he met a pair of dogs he loved (they exchanged face licks) and had a cordial meeting with the Doberman/pit mix he’s been wary of. Much appreciated!

Hey man, you got a great dog there. And he's got a great owner who came to the right place to learn about him. I hope it's false alarm, but the excessive smelling by the other dogs might indicate some health problems, especially because he's neutered. If you have the money, doing some blood tests may come up with something you want to know sooner rather than later.

@@Flippokid thank you so much! Hard to see in the video, but all the dogs were actually licking down there which is funny but typically normal. I honestly think it’s because of his recent bath with his organic/oatmeal based shampoo.🤷🏽‍♂️

Not all dogs are geared to having friends. I had two huskies over a 25 year period who, aside from having each other for about five years, never spent time around other dogs. They were excellent passing other dogs on walks, no aggression, but it never occurred to me to try to make them have friends. They were with the family 95% of the time and seemed to have pretty full lives. Back then I don't think doggy daycare and dog parks were even a thing, at least where I lived. My advice is to try to give your dog friends if you can, but don't feel too guilty if you can't. Just make sure they're a big part of the family.

What a handsome boy, he and his owner are going to have a very good life together. I have a cattle dog/Aussie mix who is completely uninterested in other dogs outside her home pack. She is not aggressive towards strange dogs, just tolerates a sniff from one on a walk and is ready to move on. I think Joel’s advice about finding a couple of doggie friends is just right for this lovely boy.

“Not a dog park dog.” Some dogs aren’t cut out to mingle comfortably with an ever-changing cast of characters. He would do well with a few close doggy friends, mostly female, and would probably become playful with them. Respect his introverted nature without isolating him. Great owner! Joel, your analysis and guidance are always spot-on. Thunder’s a champ.

Dogs are smart and sensitive. Giving them lots of praise will make them feel happy and secure. When your dog does something good, praise him a little too loudly. This will make your dog feel affectionate, which will fill his heart and help him grow up healthy. It is also important to enjoy walks with your dog. A walk is an important opportunity to experience many things together with your dog. Talk to your dog, give him treats while walking, make eye contact, etc., and deepen your relationship with your dog by communicating with him.🐶🐶🐕🐕

i was at a swedish dog park a week ago, and some dogs were humping away at other dogs. One dog went after my dog and my dog told him off 30 times and i waited for the owners to do something, my dog tried to leave but was followed and came to me so i had to step in and remove the other dog.. the owners were just like "uhhhhh thats just dog behaviour". which pissed me off cause thats not OK. and my dog goes along great with all dogs tho he speaks alot when playing with males, with females he is nicer and lets them take the wheel. but i usualy tell him calm or quiet, if hes being 2 much. My dog is also great with unsure and "unstable" dogs, cause i forced it on him. if we meet and gonna say hello to a unsure/unstable dog he just lies down and lets the dog mellow out before iniziating play.

Hey Joel! I love your channel and the wealth of knowledge that you are bestowing upon us. You truly are one of a kind and your dog training should be shared with the world. You mention at the end of every video to like, comment and subscribe - you clearly have a bit of an understanding of the KZbin algorithm and how to increase activity for your videos. I'd really recommend you take some time to consider the way that you title your videos - at the moment it seems like they are titled for the people that are already subscribed. Remember that most videos get accessed through the search bar, and to be honest I can't really see anyone typing the tile of this (or most of your other videos) video into their search bar to find this video. If you gave your video a title that would be more likely to be searched (say something like 'How to read dog body language' or 'Joel Beckman shows how to introduce your dog to other dogs' , I feel that your content would get even more viewership. A lot of big KZbinrs change the titles of their videos when they get less engagement - being searched for really helps. Keep up the great work!
@BDTraining

Those are great suggestions. Do you think the title or the thumbnail is more important to word it that way? Or Both?
@tehrafa1206
@tehrafa1206 2 жыл бұрын
@@BDTraining I'd say both. First your video has to come up on someone's list via searching. Then they have to want to click on it (that's where the thumbnail comes in). Many bigger channels (and smaller channels wanting to grow) also use 'tags' on their videos that help for the algorithm too - things that your videos are similar to or include. Think instagram hashtags, but for youtube. Stuff like #dogtraining , #dogaggression #puppytraining #Beckman (the name carries a lot of weight, particularly as the channel grows and people search for your name in particular)
@tinyali7704
@tinyali7704 2 жыл бұрын
@@BDTraining I’d keep thinking “newspaper headline” for the thumbnail wording (like this vid) & play the algorithm name game in the title like @terafa mentioned. (Maybe even check google’s “search term report” for most used dog training searches) As a sub, I’d love to see a bigger emphasis on the playlist section! It’ll make it easier to navigate for the long term fans, but also keep everyone on the channel longer by having similar videos grouped up with the one they’ve chosen. Bonus points for making it easier for you to track which topics could use more/less coverage. P.S. can’t wait for that wheel to spin on scent work. That’s next for Thunder after we proof more basic commands/ ween him off of treats

To me, Thunder seemed to be REALLY sensitive to correction, almost to a fault. A minor correction and he sat, then was very reluctant to get up and approach. Yes, he's a big/powerful beast of a dog, but looks to be a gentle giant. If he'll learn how to play, I'm thinking that'll help him a LOT. A year and a half in a shelter is like solitary confinement for a dog. And the poor guy has the stigma of being a pitty, his facial expressions aren't clearly visible due to his black coat/face, ends up at a shelter after becoming an adult, left feeling abandoned. Who knows what his formative years were like. He's a GOOD boy though.

This was good. Question on how to go about helping our dog meet and be friends with other dogs, safety, and how to help her leave it with other aggressive dogs on walks. We have a 4 year old Dutch Shepard mix rescue who was dumped by previous owners. She now walks better on leash thanks to your loose leash videos -Thank you! Tho she still wants to walk out front. She is very reactivate when other dogs bark and growl at her. Her attitude changes immediately and she behaves like she's saying "bring it!" . Otherwise with dogs that are calm, she isn't very reactivate which has improved greatly since using your loose leash training techniques. She still exihibts dominance (jump on other dog) when meeting other dogs for example with our friends dogs when trying to get her opportunities to be friends with another dog.

I’m not a fan of dog parks or meeting strange dogs! I take classes, obedience & advanced obedience, Therapy dog classes & I invite the dogs to my house that I feel is going to be a good experience! I have 3 Bullmastiff’s & I have no problem walking them all together! Just my views!

My dog has always been nervous but was always social and never any issues and if was nervous he would run off but when turned 3 he stopped running away and instead would go for the dog so had to start putting on lead and now he goes for any dog that gets in his face . It’s just a total nightmare

I almost didn’t watch this video but I’m so glad I did because this is literally my dog (thunder is definitely better behaved lol). He loves people and female dogs but can be really bold and challenging with male dogs

I love seeing Maesha (I know I probably spelled it wrong) She is such a beautiful dog. Is she a purebred ridgeback? Or is she mixed with a vizsla? She is so fun to watch, such a happy go lucky dog.

I'd say the one difference with my dog would be up close he growls at males we tried to introduce him with a doodle through our fenced yard and very growling and tense behavior

Hey Joel, I have a year and 2 month old male un-neutered cane corso. He is super great so far with every dog he’s met but he’s super rough and playful and it’s gotten him hurt at dog parks so I’ve stopped taking him. He has never growled or reacted aggressively to a dog attacking him or correcting him in his life. I’m aware he’s getting older and I need to continue to socialize him and watch his behavior so I’ve started setting up play dates with specific dogs. My main question is this. Pretty much every time he meets a dog he greets them with a play bow either before or after sniffing. I mean I can’t remember I time he hasn’t done that, is that a good sign? From what I’ve learned in different training classes and videos usually play bows are a good sign. I honestly just want some clarification on what it means when he does this. He’s also a very confident dog and is very bold and in your face ( he’s 120 lbs) so sometimes it trips dogs out. He also plays a lot with his paws, by throwing them in other dogs faces and jumping on them ( not really a mount but idk really it’s usually like he jumps up and off and play bows in a matter of seconds) just trying to understand his body language. Would love a quick response! God bless.

Joel... My dog is very nice and never barks or growls at dogs at the dog park. He has started to get into the smelling phase and humping phase and loves smelling butts and privates. But he doesn't know how to play... He is very timid and jumps back a bit if another dog runs up on him everything. He play bows with us, not with dogs. He likes to run after dogs. But is scared and fearful if another dog runs after him

Meisha is a pretty stunning dog, what breed do we think she is? A large Viszla? Maybe a cross of some kind? Ridgeback?

is it normal for the gentle leader and Halti comparable to be notorious for slipping off the snout? My female Akita is like an escape artist with them on. I turn my back for 3 seconds and when I look again, it's dangling from the neck. I have tightened it up to where there is almost no slack in the neck.

So glad the owner adopted this good boy!! EXCELLENT OWNER ! ....So many Piities get euthanized in California shelters...especially adults..but young ones too..and its WRONG! ..Question........Would him trying to mount dogs , if he was off leash in a dog park,..not cause another dog to want to start a fight tho??? Thats when I've seen it happen the most....dogs not wanting to be mounted........Thunder may have been used for breeding..if he was intact until he was 4 & neutered at the shelter .....so that may be why he thinks that's an ok thing to do?....My intact male Bouvier ( who only has met females at the breeders) tried to mount a neutered male who he had just met recently.here at the farm......if I hadn't caught it....I know it would have definately been a fight...He had met him on a couple of occasions previously.. so I trusted them both off leash together.....now not so much .... GREAT video explaining body language!! Please KEEP THEM COMING !!😊

Do you think the dog would "come out of his shell" and play if he spent a bunch of time in a safe pack environment? Seems odd that he is so reserved in terms of physical communication w other dogs... esp given his breed. I get the idea he would do well to hang out with a Brandon Fouche pack for a while?

It depends on their history and how they grew up. If they've been attacked or not, had friends before or not.. dogs are new to him so it seems like he needs to you let him know there's nothing to be afraid of and use position reinforcement with treats if you see behavior you want

My female Aptb behave the same way. I am still worried about her meeting a really aggressive dog, will she impose herself, make the other one back down? In my neighborhood there are lot of dogs let out by the owners without muzzle /leach, since she doesn't react much to the barking I'm the one chasing them and she then get in the thing, without barking... Am I needlessly worrying?

Whats the deal with lip licks? 🤔 My Amstaff does that too, not only when meeting dogs, it looks just the same (to me) when there's rabbits, deer or something else i guess she would like to hunt... My trainer said its a calming signal, but it doesnt look like that to me...

Millan says it can be a sign of anxiety or a sign they they are prepping for a bite but it all depends 🤔. I'm always looking at that in my dogs too. They lick before they yawn sometimes also

"He likes females." "He's a humper." Well he was an unaltered male for 5 years of his life. Of course he likes females and is a humper 😂 There's no way to know if his old owners used him as a stud. He's a good looking dog. I wouldn't be surprised.
