I personally believe in the anti graviton theory. There’s a theory that all gravity is based off a particle known as a graviton, and the superman manipulates these. By projecting a field of them, he defies gravity. And since he’s bending space, he’d also be bending time. Explains how his superspeed works. It’d also enable him to lift heavy objects without the crumbling under his tiny surface area, by altering the mass and weight of them.

There's an older DC story that tells the origin of the Kryptonians and why they are so similar to humans. Basically Ancient Atlantians were really advanced and a space faring people. They colonized Krypton which was similar to Earth, but had significantly higher gravity and the red sun. Long story short, evolution took its place.

I'm pretty sure Kryptonians have different microbiological and physiological make-ups, because if you take a human and put him on the Moon he starts leaping several feet in the non-existent atmosphere, and said human would need to exercise to keep their muscles from becoming limp. Superman doesn't need constant and walks normally without the effect of floating away, so I think Kryptonian muscles and tissue cells are some highly complicated stuff.

It depends on the version of Superman. In the original version (Earth-Two Universe) Kryptonians were people who were at the pinnacle of human development and had superhuman abilities on Krypton, including enhanced speed. Superman inherited those abilities on Earth. Later, they added that yellow sun radiation enhanced his abilities which gave him flight and enhanced senses. In the Earth-One Universe, Kryptonians had no super-powers on Krypton but did have highly advanced science. When Superman came to Earth, the radiation from the Yellow Sun immediately gave him superhuman abilities. However, exposure to red sun radiation rendered Superman powerless while he was exposed to it. When they completely rebooted Superman in 1986 they made some changes to his powers. When he arrived on Earth he had no superpowers and appeared to be a normal human child. It turned out that his body functions as a solar capacitor that stores yellow sun radiation and after a few years his body started to develop superhuman abilities. Soon he developed toughness (he got run over by a bull and didn't get harmed), enhanced senses, strength, and as a late teen he began to fly. However, although he has a vast amount of stored energy it is not unlimited. During the "Final Night" Event (when he was cut off from the Sun energy due to the Sun being covered by a creature named The Sun Eater) after three days he was barely faster than a speeding bullet and it is likely that in a day or two he would have been completely powerless. Concerning his ability to fly, it is due to telekinesis. In addition to flight, it also give him two extra abilities. One is that his body projects a small field around it (within 1/2 of an inch) that causes anything within it to become indestructible. This protects his outfit from damage but not his cape (which often gets damaged). It also has the side effect of preventing him from remaining dirty, any dirt will eventually fall away his body. The other extra ability is tactile telekinesis. It allows Superman to control anything he is physically touching. He noticed that when he is lifting something heavy it doesn't seem to have any weight. It explains how he is able to lift things (like a ship) that would break in two if he was just using super strength. He can relax his tactile telekinesis so he can through things. BTW, Superboy (a clone of Superman and Lex Luthor) initially had only the power of tactile telekinesis. It allowed him to simulate some of Superman's abilities, such as superstrength, flight, and invulnerability. However, Superboy was only invulnerable to physical objects, he was vulnerable to energy attacks such as fire (he was carrying a hero who was on fire and the fire burned him). Concerning Kryptonite, there was no kryptonite on Krypton. When Krypton exploded, the explosion converted some of the material of Krypton into a radioactive mineral, Kryptonite. Superman is vulnerable to its radiation, although he can make a full recovery if it is removed. One significant change they made was that kryptonite is also lethal to humans. Long-term exposure will cause a form of irreversible poisoning in humans. Lex Luthor found this out the hard way when he wore a ring with a kryptonite jewel for months to protect himself from Superman (he was told by his people that it was harmless to humans...they were wrong). Eventually, it cost him his hand, and eventually to save his life they had to clone a new body for him around the non-poisoned flesh that remained (his brain, a portion of his brain stem, and his eyes).

This actually seems very plausible and the most sensible (outside of the idea some have quoted as kryptonians have telekinesis in a way). If they emit their own radiation that explains why they are "solar batteries" and why extreme use of their abilities make them weaker (great example is the death of Superman where doomsday exhausted a lot of superman's absorbed solar energy). I don't think they are controlling their own radiation however, they seem to more be controlling the solar radiation they've absorbed. Same principle as your idea, different source. The control would likely be learned much like we learn to do things on our own like riding a bike. So, imagine this, the Kryptonians evolved from either plant life or from reptiles, that would explain the Solar energy absorption efficiency and why they can at will control the use of the energy

That's a very interesting notion! I like your theory on Kryptonians keeping certain aspects derived from possible evolutionary days as plant life, THAT is very intuitive. Tell me, why do you think Kryptonians are able to discharge nuclear/solar energy? For visionary reasons, it makes sense, but why do you think they'd need to discharge? Doomsday in Batman V Superman, for instance, is constantly generating what seems to be a radiation storm. Do you think this is some form of defense, or perhaps a way of venting out energy that could begin to damage the body?

KLyfe - Science Behind Superheroes I see it as the same principle as a capacitor, it can only store so much electrical energy before it starts to discharge it manually as opposed to when a load is introduced. Even in a specific story they hint at this by having Superman die at the end due to too much solar energy absorbed over time (I believe it was Allstar). They discharge it because it's an enormous amount of energy that while it may seem natural because they can absorb it, truly it is not because it's a stronger energy source than what they have naturally evolved to live with.

Kevin McCaleb actually they were usually exposed to a different wavelength of solar energy. thus the effects a different wavelength would have been originally "unpredictable" to them as they would've had to venture out of there solar system for the results to be found.

Sure, he could fly through the sun unharmed, but that was because his invulnerability became stronger as he absorbed more of the sun's energy by being in direct contact with it. He couldn't "pick up" the sun, for example. However, I remember one Superboy story wherein he was able to scoop out a tiny bit of incendiary stellar mass (the exact details escape me at the moment) and transport it somewhere. The mass was about the size of an old VW Bug. But again, he wasn't stronger than the sun.

You didn't actually explained anything. And Krypton being trillions of years old, that would make Krypton older than the very universe. Here's why and how kryptonians develop those abilities on Earth. Krypton had kryptonite! This exotic xenomineral as seen in the TV show Smallville but also the comics has incredible mutagenic properties. Allowing genes to develop special abilities. It is truth with humans and it's true with kryptonians. Think about it! Would living in a planet with a red dwarf star really grant this immense ability to store solar energy? NO! If anything it would make them susceptible and vulnerable to stronger sources of light. Same as if our sun turned into a F class or a O class star we humans would not only not develop any power but we would also need to live in shielded domes or the risk of getting skin cancer or blind would significantly increase. So a red dward star can't make you into a solar battery! Gravity! As we've seen with our own species. If we were to move from Earth to Mars, and lived there long enough our bone and muscle density would significantly decrease. And if we tried coming back to the Earth it might prove fatal to us. Basically over time any physical advantage we took from the Earth to Mars would be lost. And we see that Kryptonians funny enough without their powers they're as physically capable as humans. So the effects of growing in a higher gravity environment would fade with time. So again kryptonian powers don't come from Krypton's greater gravity. So what can unite all of this aspects into something that could and would grant kryptonians their powers under different stronger types of stars? Kryptonite! As I see it, kryptonite or a variation of it. Was always present on Krypton geological composition. This exotic mineral emitted some sort of radiation, and all life on Krypton evolved exposed to that radiation. So to kryptonian lifeforms it was a natural form of radiation that given its exotic properties, it enabled kryptonian lifeforms to evolve to the sizes and shapes we saw. The size of kryptonian lifeforms goes against the very gravity of Krypton. Krypton as been said to have 33 times the gravity of the Earth and in more recent years those 33 went down to 5 times. Either way such a larger amount of gravity given what we know about evolution, you combine the greater gravity and the weaker amount of solar energy the planet gets from its star and lifeforms could never have evolved to those forms and sizes. So something had to push evolution beyond the natural. And what is there on Krypton that doesn't exists anywhere else? Kryptonite! In most recent years (over a decade) both in the comics, Smallville, and now in Batman V Superman movie, we saw that kryptonite was a natural mineral on Krypton. In the comics and in Smallville TV show it has been showned that kryptonite was actually used to power their civilization. So on Krypton natural raw kryptonite wasn't lethal. But when they gain their powers it suddenly becomes lethal. And that's another very important clue! So to sum it up. Kryptonite acted as a kind of gene booster causing kryptonian genetic material to possess unique exotic properties also. This mineral might have been the result of the planet greater mass. Or something else plus the gravity. And because they lived on a star that could put out 1/10 to 1/100 of our star energy, then their bodies naturally absorbed kryptonite radiation more than it they did sunlight. Once on Earth exposed to a stronger type of solar energy and lacking the kryptonite radiation, their bodies instead draw energy directly from the star nearest to them. Which in turn would explain almost all if not all of a kryptonian powers. This! Is a explanation that actually explains something, even if not everything. And most of all it can't be totally debunked, like yours can.

What's up, Peeps. I am a fan, and yes a comic book Geek and proud of it, as well as a subscriber. I happened onto this video, and since we're speaking here of "scientifically explanations" of Superman's power--- a personal fascination of mine--- I hoped to weigh in on a topic. A lot of time has been given to the extent and or viability of Supe's powers and how he gets them. Scott Naswaunder at *Nerdsync* , a comic-vine and explanation show right here on KZbin posted an interesting video addressing this. On the comments, I added my personal theories about the extent and reasons behind Superman's powers [never _did_ but that "bio electric aura" nonsense] after several years of incidental research. I listed them there and went into some detail, but basically , on top of the 2 reasons above, the Man of Steel's powers most logically stem from: *A)* A more evolved form of muscle cells and tissues, combining both slow twitch AND fast twitch properties. This would naturally be greatly effected by the gravity, as well, meaning a normal Kryptonian in a harsh Krypton like enviornment would STILL be beyond peak human strength and speed and durability, just to be able to move normally in that type of enviornment and create fewer waste chemicals. Transported to an earth enviornment, even without the yellow sun, he'd be arguably thousands of times stronger and more durable. *B)* A cellular structure that more efficiently copies itself, providing advanced healing and highly retarding the rate of cell degradation. This would account for his hieghtened immunity and slowed aging, as well as a quicker cellular regeneration rate. *C)* A chorded or "braided" muscle structure (like that of apes) making them naturally stronger, pund for pound,and more physically durable even _without_ yellow sun energy or gravitational advantages. *D)* Advancedly evolved adaptive antibodies in his immune system, which would destroy invading bacteria and vairuses, as well as give him greater protection from extremes of heat and cold. *E)* Advanced chromosomes that we humans just _don't have_ yet, which make his genetic structure more unique, more highly evolved and also accounts for any organelles in his cell structure which store and convert solar radiation. *F)* The "Photo-nucleic Effect", which writer S. Elliot Maggin coined to explain the _direct_ effect the yellow sun has on Superman's body on a cosmological level, beyond him being a mere "solar capacitor". *G)* A more advanced neuro and synaptic structure; _th is_is what truly accounts for Superman's greater memory, higher functioning senses, and faster nervous system. Could the reason kryptonians produce these gravitons be to combat the harsh gravitational pull of krypton. So to a kryptonian on krypton, the gravitons they produce would only be enough to relieve the pressure of kryptons gravity. But on earth the gravitons superman produces are actually stronger than earths gravitational pull. If that's the case, then Superman would need the ability to not only produce the gravitons, but manipulate them as well, otherwise he wouldn't be able to control direction or speed during flight.

However, a remnant of the genetic code survived in some people as the Metagene. With the right catalyst, a metagene can activate and give an individual superhuman abilities. However, it must be the right catalyst. If an individual has a metagene that will activate when they are at ground zero of a nuclear explosion (see Firestorm), but instead they are exposed to 1,000,000 volts of electricity it would have the same result as a person without the metagene being exposed to 1,000,000 volts of electricity (basically death). There are also some heroes who don't seem to have a metagene but likely do. One of these is The Atom (Ray Palmer). It appears that his power come from his costume, and that seems to be the case since anyone can use his technology to shrink. What sets The Atom apart is that he can stay small for a long as he chooses without danger. But anyone else who uses his technology to shrink will eventually explode unless they return to full size immediately. I think that The Atom has a metagene that staves off the effects of his technology and allows him to safe remain less than full size as long as he chooses. I also have the theory of ambient activation of the metagene. An example of this is with the hero Black Lightning. He started off as a fighter who used a costume that allowed to generate blasts of electricity but eventually developed actual lightning powers. I theorize that Black Lightning had an active metagene that was activated due to long-term usage of electricity-generating technology and gave him the same abilities without the technology. This is why many alien species in the DCU are afraid of humans. In all of the other races each individual is genetically the same as the others. One Dominator is the same as another, one Daxamite is the same as another, and so on. But with humans some humans can develop unique superhuman abilities, something no other species in the DCU is able to do. As an example, The Dominators captured 100 humans and tested them. They figured that maybe one would barely survived their tests, but they were wrong. Eight of them did survive and all of them gained unique superpowers.

In the 1980s reboot they provided an improved explanation for Superman's powers. His powers come from Earth's yellow sun. His body stores the energy which enhances all of his abilities. However, it took him years to store up enough energy for it to begin enhancing his abilities. As a young child he broke his arm, but a few years later he was able to survive being run over by a bull without harm. He soon developed vision powers, and in his late teens he started to be able to fly. Concerning his build, growing up he worked out as a athlete, including being a star football player. It is likely that his body keeps his build due to the energy his body has stored. Concerning flying, it is likely due to Superman having the power of tactile telekenesis. He has the ability to control objects that he touches. It explains why he is able to lift large heavy objects rather than (1) going through them or (2) having them break in half. Superman once noticed that objects seemed almost weightless when he lifted them. It's likely that it gives him the ability to lift his own body to fly. It also generates a small field around his body that makes any material close to his body (like his costume) indestructible but doesn't extend far from his body (his cape isn't protected).

He originally only had tactile telekinesis which allowed him to simulate some of Superman's abilities, mainly superstrength, invulnerability, and flight. However, his invulnerability only extended to physical objects. He was vulnerable to energy attacks. As an example, when he attempted to grab a hot object the heat from the object burned him. Later, he started to developed full kryptonian abilities including full invulnerability.

My cousin collected Batman comics because he thought he could grow up to become Batman. He couldn't be any of the other heroes. Superman is an alien, Atom was a scientist who used white dwarf star matter to create his shrinking teach (and that WDSM wasn't exactly found at the local store), Flash barely survived being hit by lightning energized chemicals (and they never did give a list of those chemicals or their quantities), GL got his ring from an alien (another alien!), etc. He never mentioned Green Arrow... guess GA wasn't cool enough for him. He didn't read Marvel, just DC. But there aren't that many normal human heroes in Marvel for him to grow up to become anyway (just like in DC). They were all bitten by radioactive spiders, or injected with a super-soldier serum and hit with "vita-rays," or born a god or mutant, etc.

Possible explanations for their powers: 1. Super Strength - Result of high gravity, likely from a planet FAR denser than our own. 2. Heat Vision/X-Ray Vision and Super Flare - Byproduct of vestigial night vision capabilities, as well as radiation emission necessary to keep them warm in a cold environment. 3. Super Breath - Byproduct of their augmented strength, which can compress air to such a degree that it can freeze objects on contact. Might even be able to initiate nuclear fusion, but for some reason this doesn't happen. 4. Flight - It is doubtful strength alone would allow life to evolve as it has on Krypton. It is possible that each organism, from multi to single cellular life, possesses organelles designed to allow them to counter the effects of gravity. 5. Super Speed - The ability to warp gravity can, as a side-effect, allow one to have the biological analog to a warp drive. 6. Weakness to Kryptonite - It is possible that kryptonite actually contains vital minerals that allow a Kryptonian to maintain control of their powers. Otherwise, in the world they live in where certain forms of radiation are precious, they would drain themselves of energy. Red sun radiation may have similar effects. One of the reasons they weaken in the presence of the radioactive rocks though is that it has an effect similar to that of the likes of strontium-90, or other vital elements that have been swapped with unstable isotopes. 7. Super Durability - A byproduct of their ability to manipulate the fundamental forces of nature. They can increase the intensity of these forces to harden their bodies from impact. This also extends to objects that they are holding. The planet they live on in order for them to evolve these traits must be EXTREMELY dense (likely a black dwarf considering how plentiful kryptonite is),, as to necessitate a biology that is radically different yet similar to our own. This in mind though, any animals on their planet would also possess similar abilities.

OK please don't take this the wrong way. Kryptonians can't use ANY of their abilities under the influence of red solar radiation. Which means that they wouldn't be able to use their heat vision on Krypton. However you are correct in in your assumption that the radiation emitted from their heat vision is stored up solar radiation. If a Kryptonian expends too much of this solar radiation, i.e. "solar flare" or "super flare", they become powerless for a short duration of time as they would need to replenish their radiation stores. The built up yellow solar radiation would allow for the heat and x-ray visions as well as the emission of gravatons. So in all, you're right. But heat vision wouldn't have been something that they evolved with on Krypton.

Another fun video full of....Here’s just one important point: Krypton could not be “...trillions of years old...” The universe, according to every reputable source, is around 13 - 14 billion years old. Krypton was supposed to be in our universe, perhaps even in our galaxy. So while red dwarf stars may sustain themselves for trillions of years, they are all in the early part of their theoretical “lifespan”. So far as we know, nothing in the universe is anywhere remotely close to trillions of years old.

What his cells do is that they are using sunlight to produce an insanely superior amount of energy it's like how nuclear fusion powers a sun. His body is essentially a star all on it's own it just requires the energy of another star to create energy. If one somehow approaches the speed of light, one would need an infinite amount of energy and thus the mass would become infinite. Since his body is a basically a star on it's own his energy is essentially infinite.
