Why does the Kiel Canal exist?

Some corrections: 1. There are no locks on the Suez canal 2. There is a toll on the Kiel Canal, but yes, it's not that big. 3. The main reason the canal was built was in fact the German Navy. Emperor Wilhelm II. wanted a quick and safe way to get ships from the main navy base in Kiel to the north sea. Commercial traffic was just a nice bonus
