we've seen that multiple times, there are ways to lose your memories in re zero. echidna took subaru's memories from the first tea party, gluttony with his whole authority, etc. we dont know if this is the first time subaru came to the world. he could've come there 400 years earlier and died and thats when satella lost it and gave into her alter ego aka the witch of envy, so now she brought him back and made sure than she never loses him again. but satella doesnt want this, she wants subaru to kill her coz she is a threat to the world in her witch of envy persona

@@sorakirisaki5330 my theory is that at the end of the series, Emilia will help Subaru kill Satella for good. Then Emilia will take the Envy Factor into herself, and with the full power of the authority, take Subaru along with the rest of the 6(8?) Witch Factors with them to the past 400 years ago. They then changed her name into Satella and Flugel and does whatever since the loop has already been closed at that point and it doesn't matter what they do. To Emilia and Subaru, it was as if they looped twice through the entire event of Re:Zero. The first loop as Emilia and Subaru to kill their past selves, then the second loop as Satella and Flugel until they die of old age or be killed by their future selves. But to the rest of the world, it looked as if the Witch Factors mysteriously appeared 400 years ago and suddenly disappeared for good, unaware of the two people containing them in a time loop of 400 years to limit the damage they can do. To clarify: in other fiction, this is a bootstrap paradox and will not be allowed. Subaru can't be his own reason to travel to the past, because then the original source of this reason would come from within the loop itself. Fortunately, this paradox only exists if you bring informations from the future into the past (as informations will lose their origin this way if it loops into itself). Since Satella is known to have patchy memories, we can at least assume that if she were to come from the future, she wouldn't be bringing many "bootstrap-like" informations. We don't know what information Flugel held (assuming he is Subaru in this theory), but considering that the world of Re:Zero has zero prophecies floating around (kind of odd for a world of magic, don't you think?) Then we can safely assume that if Flugel is indeed Subaru, then any information of the future he carried was NOT shared with the rest of the world.

I'm an advocate of the big loop theory. If you look at S01E13 "Self proclaimed knight Natsuki Subaru" and S02E13 "The sounds that make you want to cry" you can notice a parallel between Emilia's discussion with Subaru and Subaru's talk with Satella. Emilia asks Subaru why he does what he does to which Subaru says that she saved him and he is grateful. Emilia is confused because she has no memory of this, as the audience we know that is because it all happened in the first loop of Arc 1, a failed loop that got reset and everyone except Subaru lost their memories. In season 2 Subaru asks Satella why she did what she did, giving him return by death, to which Satella says that loves him and just as he saved her, she wishes for him to be saved. Subaru is confused as he has no memory of this. We can connect the dots, my theory is that Subaru does not remember any of this because it happened in a loop that got reset and only the wielder of return by death, Satella, remembers it. Echidna confirmed that return by death is Satella's power so before she gave it to Subaru (or is using it on Subaru) we can assume she would be able to use it herself. The first episode of the anime is named "The end of the beginning and the beginning of the end" I think we, the audience, did not see the beginning, a time before arc 1, before loop 1: Arc Zero. In short, I think Subaru came to this world, met Satella went on adventures and then 'bad things' happened and Subaru died. Satella used return by death over and over to try and save him, but never succeed because 'bad things' could not be stopped in the present. Satella then decided to rewind time all the way back to 400 year in the past to work to prevent the future from happening. The past was changed and now the present is different, when Subaru gets pulled into this world in episode one he doesn't meet Satella, he meets Emilia. Now I could go on about Flugel, Al and Emilia because most likely they didn't exist originally, why dream Echidna is different from the body inside the tomb, why Otto does not appear in the book of wisdom, what is beyond the seal, what is beyond the great waterfall. But that's beyond this discussion and needs another order of magnitude of speculation.

We have several traits to work with, namely: 1. Witches have extremely different values from humans. When one says "I love you" it is 100% not the same love humans feel for one another 2. Witches very seldom feel things outside of their sin. So far we've seen the most of Echidna and we DO see her feeling pride, embarassment, affection and anger. However, as we can't read her mind, we have no idea if these are genuine emotions, a facsimile she tried to emulate to interact with Subaru, or mere manifestation of her greed in some way. We do however know that every action of hers is motivated by her greed. That is the only certainty here. So while we can't know if Satella feels emotions the way humans, or at least her fellow witch Echidna, do, we do know for sure that beneath (or with) all those "I love you", she always always ALWAYS feel envy. I think what she *thinks* is love (and thus she articulates as such) is actually just a crippling envy. Her desire to keep Subaru alive and happy and be in proximity of him does not stem from love, but rather from envy. She saw someone else doing those and, out of envy, wanted to do those things for Subaru too.

My personal theory is that Emilia is Satella but just at a different stage of her life. There are way too many clues in the story pointing out that Subaru at some point will travel through time itself (and not with RBD) the whole "Subaru is Flugel" theory matches this train of thought. Anyway, my theory goes that, if Subaru will travel to the past, so will Emilia, & that for some reason or another, Emilia will end up travelling even further in the past than Subaru. Alone, afraid, and away from the people she knows, she will try some way to get back to her time, fiddeling with time magic, maybe meeting the witches in the past & finally becoming the witch of envy. Weather this ends up being the set up for Subaru to be actually Flugel & ending up sealing the witch away is a shot in the dark. But its a cool theory in my opinion. Making everything some sort of "Ouroboros" -Subaru meets Emilia in the present -Thet fall in love -They travel through time -They try the impossible to be together again -Emilia ends up becoming Satella in the past, snatching Subaru away from his world. -Subaru leaving clues & allies in the past so that himself in the future has a chance to change things. -Story repeats itself.

Not a theory but most of this has been debunked in the web novel/light novel or by the author. The witches of sin were born with ther witch facter (it passes from mother to child confirmed by the author) Subaru is the sage Flugal that sealed the witch of envy( half in the pleiades watch tower and half in his own body or ode) Emilia is most likely the witch of envy as her mother was sealed inside the door seal in the forest from season 2 and was confirmed to be a daughter of 1 of the witches of sin; the witch sealed in the forest is Minerva the witch of wrath and Emilia's mother so Emilia has the witch facter of wrath as seen in the re:zero movie(I forgot it's name but it's on Crunchyroll) The witch of envy can control Subaru's return by death's check point(she can choose to bring Subaru back to any checkpoints in time)and Subaru can control her shadows as seen in arc 7 of the web novel. Without her Subaru's return by death only goes back by minutes or seconds very weak. Also the witch of envy did not kill the witches of sin alone she had help from Flugal, the witch of greed and many others. Most likely Pandora the witch of vanity rewrote the worlds memories of what really happened. When Subaru met Emilia for the first time and she gave him the wrong name on purpose was to scare him away (it was a self defense mechanism to protect her feelings from experiencing heartbreak later thinking he would run away and abandon her because she's a half witch in every ones eyes) that was their real first meeting as proved by the author. One of the trailers for season 2 showed a mural in a church of their first meeting it is in fact a real church in the world of rezero an it was built by Flugal. The church is also the headquarters of the witch cult aslo created by Flugal to protect the elves as he wanted to make sure Emilia would be safe for when he went back to the very first checkpoint (the moment he entered the rezero world. By the time we see Subaru enter the rezero world in the anime he had already lived in that world for some time and infact had just used return by death after old age his corpse from his time as Flugal was sealed away but not before Pandora stole his witch facters and gave them to the sin archbishops (not she took them from his corpse) Emilia will get her revenge on Pandora in the future most likely getting Pandora's witch facter from her(Emilia will have to witch facters wrath and vanity but not envy as only Subaru has the witch facter of envy) meaning the witch of envy was in name only. The true witch of envy is Subaru (go figure)also known as Flugal a figure considered an equal to the the witches of sin by the witches of sin. Al is the currently missing sin archbishop of envy and knows about Subaru's return by death and is tormented by the witch of envy( he is also colorblind an only sees Emilia's silver hair) confirmed in a side story and in arc 7.

It’s really hard to say. When you add time travel and split personalities including endless death and rebirth no clear answers. Emilia definitely seems to share more than just Satella look. I would even say it’s possible there is a lot going on there. It seems Satella may even be able to possess Emilia. Than you have the fact Satella seems to be very familiar with Subaru. what if Emilia is, in fact, Satella from the future? We know that Emilia is a half-elf with silver hair, and she has a mysterious connection to witchcraft. Yah and also even if she don't want to fully admit it, she deeply love Subaru. What if this isn't the first loop when Subaru arrived in Lugnica? Maybe a lot of things happened in previous loops that led to the current situation, similar to Madoka Magica (for those who have watched it), where a girl travels through time multiple times to save her best friend. Anyway after that I think in this first loop Subaru and Emilia met in other circumstances and for some reasons she will become the Witch of Envy, go back in time, and kill all the witches, maybe for subaru's sake who knows and on her way terrifying all the citizens of the kingdom, naming herself Satella because it was the first name she gave to Subaru. To finaly be sealed by Fügel (for those who don’t know, the anime skipped a detail that Satella was sealed 400 years ago by a man named Fügel, and the Tree of Fügel was named after him; you know, the tree of the White Whale fight). Fugel can also be Subaru or not who knows Anyway then, a lot of things happened, and Emilia/Satella found that the only solution was to restart everything over by depending on Subaru. after that, somehow she summoned him from Japan to restart everything over and prevent her from becoming the Witch of Envy or to free her by killing her. Okay, this misses some logic, but time travel was never logical anyway, like what Eren did. So this is my reasoning about why Satella loves Subaru: because she is Emilia, and that's all. And somehow, that explains why Subaru said, "I'll save you." He unconsciously felt that she was Emilia and needed to be rescued.

I think that somehow either Subaru is One of the Original otherworlders that showed up roughly 400 years ago. Due to the Founding of Sumeragi, Flugel, and The recent title convention of taking the names like Petelguese, Minerva, Satella, Capella, Alderbaran etc. Are names of celestial bodies that only only exist on Earth. The People of ReZero to my knowledge and even the Star Readers from the Novel don't have names for stars, constellations, and such. It was recently revealed in arc 9 that Alderbaran isn't technically an otherworldly. So aside from Subaru any mention of someone who may be an otherworlder came from at least 400 years ago.

Assuming Flugal is / was Subaru, and he passed the Envy factor to himself in Japan from before he was summoned when he died. Then Flugal I.E a Subaru summoned to Re Zero 400 years before current time is whom Satella loves and who loved her. The Subaru we follow is the culmination of Flugals plan to either kill or save Satella by using his unknowing self freshly summoned with the Envy factor from his new start. Satella meanwhile sealed away is watching all of this through their bond and envy factor and is almost like us the audience watching the whole story play out. Knowing Subaru's doged persistence and immediate latching onto Emillia or rather the Emillia he initially met who called herself Satella and we have a alarming can of worms hinting that whatever Flugal's plan is Subaru is following it like programing and Emillia is important to it. Just imagine it, how far would a Subaru with all the knowledge of the witches and factors powers at his disposal go to save his love - Emillia for new Subaru and Satella for the old.

In the past Emilia has an invisible key which she can only see when she was a kid pandora wants her to open a seal door using that key maybe satella is trap in there and if she opens it she will be a vessel of Satella like an Otsutsuki wants to take over boruto's body for example. I'm going to give an interesting spoiler about Emilia along with a theory: It was confirmed by Alec Hoshin that Emilia is older than him, that is, she is 400 years old and lived at the same time as Satella, the two have the same appearance and also have identical ODs, as we saw in arc 6 the authority of gluttony is capable of dividing souls and arcs 7 and 8 addressed the concept of receptacle and reinforced the explanation of how the soul works in Re:Zero, therefore, there is strong evidence that emilia and satella are the same person (despite the current emilia be considered a different person to the OD laguna, just as the sphinx became a second echidna but remained another person), the satella may have split in the past using the authority of gluttony when it collapsed upon absorbing the factor from envy, emilia was "born" in this, emilia would then be a receptacle for the true satella (because as we know the satella is sealed and sharing her body with the witch of envy), if all this is really accomplished, emilia and satella they will merge again at some point.
