I am pretty sure that is not how it works man. If you reach a checkpoint the game saves the time it took you to get there and now starts adding up all the time it takes you on all your lifes starting from the checkpoint. So his time before the checkpoint is also included in that time. If it wasn't, you could get like 1 second world records in 10 minute levels if there is a checkpoint at the end. But you can't.

The tight part @minute 11:00 approx. needed you to stop the bigblue shell closer to the thing that goes down, cause that shell is slow compared to the jump you gotta do. The coolest thing might be to have to do that sword diving in midair to get to the goal. Awesome level (quite crazy) but you got awesome skills to pass it :)
