Why doesn't Export to Excel work with Power BI Row-Level Security (RLS)???

Encountered this issue more than 1 year back and raised an issue with support team. I was told that this is by design and they cannot do anything about it. It took a toll on us to convince the client that we cannot test RLS exported data.

Okay. But the RLS doesn't work if using excel you connect to the power BI data model in the cloud (RLS already definied). All users with Power BI Pro and orles set up correctly. Any solution? Thanks in advance

Thank you for video. But when wee are trying to test as a role I could see Analyze in excel as greyed out , normally i see it as enabled. Is this expected?

Q: this behaviour of the test as role functionality is by design the same also today...but in my case i would like to understand why my very complex RLS is not working properly and i can't login with the destination user (the john doe of your example), is there any workaround to export tables as they are viewed by the final user? I have to make a comparison between with and without RLS to retrieve the differences to investigate. (Forgive my bad english) thank u

Hey , Added row level security for the PBI , but as a user/ viewer who has restricted access i want to download the raw data is there any way the restricted user can download the raw data with respect to that row filter?

Hey I have built something similar but not a graph,but a matrix I would like to export the matrix without changing the format is there any possibility, I failed to get one solution from community. Format issues : Stepped layout getting jumbled up, data moving from vertical to horizontal uff so many to mention.

Does this work the same for the Underlying data? I have a report that is shared with multiple users that want to access the underlying data but I need to keep RLS in place.

Hello Patrick, Can't we use Drill Through button with RLS ? i have some idea but can't implement it. Please brainstorm on this topic and make a Video if possible. Problem : I got 10 buttons one 1 page and want to enable buttons based on RLS (user email Id) and then those buttons take you to different pages.

This video saved me so much work! Thank you! I was baffled why it seemed like users could export all the data from the dataset until I found this video. My only issue is that I'm not able to test through a 'private' browswer window at my work, due to security and not being able to authenticate as someone else. The only way I've found to test and be sure that the export is working with RLS to grant a colleague access to the app and to one of the roles and have them screen share with me while I watch them export. Is there another way or no? Thanks again.

Great job. Hi I have a question here. My manager has asked me to integrate alexa or google assistant in power bi app in my phone. What they want is if they ask a question using Q&A from report result which I will get that should be in voice. Ex. If Ask over the phone “ what is my this month sales amount?” result should be in speech only. Can you help.

Hello, Patrick. Really great alert. I'm little confused when export option is available to the end user using App. What is the requirements in order to use the export to excel? In my example the subscription is Premium, I am Pro user and can export. If the end-users have Free subscription, can they export using App on Ipad from example or they will need a Pro license. Thanks!

My questions are: "can we fix this so it exports the data as per the impersonation occurring on the visual?" followed by "when do you think this will be implemented?" hopefully ending with a comment of "okay, looking forward to that, thanks". Great video too! :P

My guess is never. This issue is only when you are viewing as and the intent is for the consumption of the report and to validate that RLS is indeed working. When an actual user is viewing, everything will work as expected.

Hi Patrick, I am currently making a finance report with RLS and have just found this issue. Do you know if there is something in the works for the "Test As Role" feature to get an upgrade for Exports? Our finance team wanted to use this to ensure the correct values were being applied to particular users before we go live. Great work by the way!
