Ten years after his breakout EP So Far Gone, Drake’s legacy is in a firm yet complicated position. Undeniably, Drake is one of hip-hop’s biggest game-changers ever and has a good chance of becoming the best-selling hip-hop artist of all time. But despite his big status, and in some ways because of this status, the shift in the masses from celebrating Drake to hating on Drake was quick and intense. In particular, we will look at how increasing commercial success, ghostwriting allegations, and constant time in the limelight has changed the popular opinion of Drake from a goofy, non-threatening Canadian hitmaker to one of hip hops most clowned rappers.

Drake is a market genius. He knows how to keep his name relevant. As a fan, I can admit that nowadays he chases trends instead of creating them like he did before. It was a time (2010-15) that didn’t hear any bad or corny verses from Drake. Even if he put out trash; general public is going to eat it up just bc who he is. Drake will most likely go down as the most popular rapper of all time and you can’t hate him for out smarting the game.

You often make videos about “why doesn’t Hip Hop respect” a certain rapper. I would love to see you make a video about “why does Hip Hop respect” certain rappers. Such as Kendrick Lamar, J.Cole, A$AP Rocky, Future, Meek Mill, Nipsey Hussle, Rick Ross, Wiz Khalifa, Kevin Gates & Lil Wayne just to name a few. Your point of views are always spot on & accurate. I feel like he never had a chance from the American hip-hop folks. He was always fighting from the start, they tried the "he is Canadian", "he aint from the hood", then the "ghost writing stuff" allowed the community that was against him to LEVEL UP, LOL. I would do what Drake is doing, if the hiphop/rap community doesn't respect him... I would say fuck em anyway. Go for just being the best artist while keeping a choke hold on the urban culture. Global icon is better anyway.
@resolvexi808

@John Thats not even the main reason. You dont have to be from hardcore streets to make it and be respected in Hip Hop, its the fact hes lied so much throughout his music and doesnt care about the culture and those that got him there at all. He spit over one Dilla beat and after that never mentioned his name again. He cheated with ghost writers and sent his fanbase of dumbass females to attack Meek for speaking the truth. He speaks of women like objects and they still suck up to him. These people just dont understand the anger that brings to those struggling. None of this would matter if he didnt act like he wasnt the best in hip hop, and Put out "Gods plan" as if he cares at all about any of them people. To top it off he only smirks the hate off cause he knows he got money. Thats all these people will ever back him up with, the money and his "character". And Mr blend fuck you, and fuck the 1% taking all the wealth like they deserve it. All that money will be nothing when hes dead and he'll just be remembered for being rich and loving himself. Pac and Biggie will be remembered for being who the fuck they were and not an actor.

@John they dont fuck with him because hes an actor whos trying to portray a hard hip hop mogul whos the "best", when in reality hes just acting and singing words other people helped wrote. And they hate to see someone so inauthentic make more than those whove really struggled and crafted an important message. Drake was cool when he first started out. Just a kid rapping like everyone else does. But he fucked up lying about shit and acting like hes the best then backing off after a beef and claiming to have a Industry killing diss.. And that being from the streets shit aint cool, it's fucking sad. Its all glorified on the radio. White mommas listening to war stories in the car like they should be vibing to it . I hate seeing my city like this, and seeing people who come from it talk about it likes its nothing. Shit needs to change and that aint gonna happen with a hip hop full of drakes and drill rappers. Niggas who use their influence for themselves, and niggas who dont use their Influence for shit!

R18bbit Nope. I’m Canadian and lived in America for 27 years. Just moved back to Canada. You don’t know what systematic poverty is. No such thing in Canada. Show me a community in Canada where there is no high school and the middle school doesn’t have books or supplies? Name a community where they don’t have large grocery stores because there’s too much theft. In Detroit they drive cars through walls of businesses all the time. People do armed robberies for $500 to feed their kids. You can die for $20 in Detroit. There are several classes below Canada’s lowest class in America. A Canadian can’t understand having no healthcare and a job that doesn’t pay enough, with the highest car insurance and worst roads in the country.

Whis I agree. Drake makes some songs where he kills it. He could kill it every song but that’s not where the industry is anymore. When the guy makes trash it’s because that’s what sells. It’s unfortunate, but Drake’s really just doing his job. He’s been around for so long because he stayed relevant, and if staying relevant means eventually making some wack music then that’s on the new generation of “fans” more than the artist. That’s on everyone supporting music just because it’s trendy while sleeping on brilliance.

That was his last dope project as far as I’m concerned, but I think that his style has gone too far into the pop category coupled with the same tired themes of fame, women, and issues he has with other rappers. @@loganleatherman7647 Personally, I think the music lacks the same energy (no pun intended). Additionally, his beat selection has gotten somewhat stale (OVO 40's hazy, ambient style is cool, but hasn't really evolved past NWTS/"If You're Reading This..."). It's hard not to hate if you're used to hating he's gonna be a host if he isn't already one. Drake doesn't do rap or pop or even hip hop he does art even if some claim it's from ghost rappers

Kendrick and J Cole are introvert, geek-pleasing rappers with little to no imagination. They hate Drake for selling so much yet they're quick to point out when Kendrick/Cole get lucky on an album and sell many units. Drake's been doing this consistently. At the end of the day, Cole and Kendrick fans just want his spot. Drake has some talent, and his music sounds good sometimes, sometimes it’s just filler. The thing about Drake is he doesn’t say much of anything we haven’t already heard. He does have a sound, and he’s very good at doing that sound, but I think if another artist tried hard and had a little talent they could make a drake song. I couldn’t say that for Kendrick, or any of the GOATs of Rap.

J Cole has definitely had a bunch of pop joints over the years but again no says nothing about him being pop. I think you missed going into Drake's rep as a wave rider. His whole pull a new artist up can be read as part of that, and people clowned him on the Toronto Raptors super fandom because before that he was riding the Warriors, and the Heat. That feeds into him coming off as inauthentic. Now, that alone isn't enough to sink someone, there are tons of inauthentic rap artists, but he's inauthentic in ways that play into the natural suspicion people have of him already. That's why pusha's dis was so devastating: it felt like exposure of the in-authenticity on multiple levels.

When I was in Europe, I saw this video of Drake, it wasn't even Rap, it was this video, I couldn't even see him or hear him well, I was who this, I was this track even though interesting is not my kind of track, later not knowing that him ( Drake), I saw a a few video's of him, I was like what, this is exactly some of the stuff I studied. So I knew then he was good, checking his issue, which I think is addiction. I was watching other videos and listening to other tracks, so busy with promoting music I liked, then when, I think, he was ten years into the game, and he was still around, plus I saw his acceptance speech I think it was at (AMA, I am not sure, pls when you have the time check that) he was so positive, in life you gotta be positive to get any where. For me personally, Drake the past years since his signing is blank for me. I am excited about the coming years, since in the Rap game, people are ordinarily pawns, they got to come up with what sells to everybody, no matter the demographics, and since the cross over is an insult in the real Rap genre. So yeah, most authentic Rappers are on low income, construction worker, sanitation, admin; labels such fashion, music, public relations etc. My mom always said to me" this world's wealth has already been allocated". So Drake is light-skinned, he's not from the ghetto's of America. I know, what African American men respect in terms of Rap, in my view that era is over. " Hip Hop is dead" ( Nas) I think it died when Tupac and Biggie died. R.I.P. Today I am blessed I can listen to that good music of the 90s.
