They probably know Ellen, but maybe not as Dory until finding dory came out. But Tom Holland and Chris Pratt are superheroes and faces that kids know from the Marvel movies. Story style I think. 1. No big loveable goofy cast of side characters. The mom, her boyfriend, her boyfriend's police co-worker, restaurant owner, pixies, and everyone else is not as memorable as the side characters of films like Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc., or Toy Story. 2. Onward is also not as funny as usual. Not as funny as Brave even. Brave has moments that nail comedic timing over it (even Wall-E, the mostly-silent film does.) 3. Age. I think Pixar tries to skew for all ages, and I'm not saying Onwards doesn't do that, but it feels like Pixar can translate big, mature ideas into stories for younger kids (let's say 8 and under) and will include jokes for those age groups. Even Brave goes to make her little brothers/dad work for the younger kids of the audience, so they have characters too. "My brother had to be my replacement dad" is a fine theme, but it was handled in more of a YA/young adult way. Pixar films tackle mature stuff too, like I said. But it uses visuals/simplicity to wrap those huge concepts into a translate-able story for kids. Wall-E talks about the end of the world because of climate change but does it in a way that a five-year old can also understand, and Coco can teach any age group about death/mourning/remembering loved ones--while my guess is Onwards is more of a 10 and up theme concept. It's not quite *as* young. I think this movie was more influenced by How to Train Your Dragon. The way they approached the quest and writing the main character reminded me of it more than any Pixar films. You can even easily picture Barley Lightfoot cracking jokes with Snotlot and Tufnut (his design is close.) And Ian and Hiccup studying fantasy books together.

This whole debacle is reminding me of a documentary I watched in one of my college art classes, called "Who the %$!? is Jackson Pollock?" where a lady found a painting at a garage sale, had a friend tell her it could be worth literal MILLIONS, and then proceeded to be totally shut down and mocked and denied by many art collectors. Evn after she brought in FORENSIC SCIENTISTS to PROVE that it was 100% without a shadow of a doubt a Jackson Pollock. Their excuse? "Well it doesn't FEEL like a Pollock piece." They went on to say something along the lines of "All this 'science' can't really prove the process which an artist undergoes to truly put themselves into their work" or some absolute BS like that. The problem with "High Art" is the tendency for those who consume and critique it to become...Well, pretty damn pretentious. And I get it, Pixar IS more or less a form of "high art", at least in the animation industry. It climbed to the peak of expectations and now the wide majority of Pixar fans feel they are more or less entitled to play the part of critics. But sometimes, guys...You just gotta learn to take yourself off this pedestal and learn to enjoy a damn movie. Otherwise your cynicism could keep you from missing out on the obviously good content right in front of your face. (That being said I agree Good Dinosaur was absolute garbage, not because it didn't "feel" like a Pixar film but because it had an objectively bad story and a bad history of production Hell. Brave probably would've been much better if, y'know, Brother Bear didn't already happen years ago.)

I thought it felt more cynical than other premises. Like something from Dreamworks. Pixar is pretty optimistic in most of its premises, but this one seems like a Dorkly thumbnail. “There USED to be magic, but technology ruined it. LOOOOL!!” It’ll still be good, but it’s not a parody concept that I’d expect from the whimsical Pixar.
@amemelia5 жыл бұрын
@@stealthlock6634 I wouldnt say Pixar is optimistic like how their work has deep and emotional connections like how UP is about mourning and loss, and how walle is about destruction of the earth, or how coco is about the murder and misrepresentation of a family member
@stealthlock66345 жыл бұрын
amelia Pixar has some dark themes, yeah, but their premises and morals are always optimistic. Riley grows up learning that Sadness is important. Humans return to earth and bring it back to livable conditions. Mr. Fredrickson adopts Russel and Doug and Kevin gets to stay with her babies. Coco remembers her father and he is brought back into the family, while the murderer gets his justice. Their premises are optimistic, too. They don’t start with a feeling of cynical disappointment and dry humor, but of childlike wonder. Feelings alive in your head! A robot who came to life! A house that floats using balloons! An adventure in the afterlife! This is the first movie to go like, “Once upon a time there was magic and fantasy....and then it DIED. We killed it with mortgages, boiiiiis!” The Pegasi being pests drives home the unfamiliar cynicism further.
@amemelia5 жыл бұрын
@@stealthlock6634 but it starts with the destruction of something and THEN the good change towards the end. They start with a problem and end with a solution/ change
@stealthlock66345 жыл бұрын
amelia That’s stories in general tho. Establish a world, what’s broken about that world, and then we follow the story as the world gets fixed. Conflict resolution. Every story needs a conflict. To be fair, I think Wall-E comes the closest to being as cynical as this movie. Not just the absurd, depressing trash skyscrapers, but also the blubbery humans talking on FaceTime about how bored they are. Its premise is pretty dark right away. Onward is the second Pixar movie I can think of where the conflict is not with the character (discriminated rat, grieving old man, missing son) but with the state of the entire established world. In that respect, it is VERY Pixar.

Soul looks a lot better than Onward. The footage they showed at D23 got me excited.
@hassassinator88585 жыл бұрын
I feel like Onward has potential to be really good... but that Soul will still likely be better. And they showed Soul footage at D23?! Why did nobody tell me that? Did you have to sign an NDA or something?
@JuliaDelbel5 жыл бұрын
@@hassassinator8858 We didn't have to sign an NDA but they made us put all electronics in sealed bags after turning them off. I thought the Soul footage was good but it seems like it might be a little too much like Inside Out so far, especially only 5 years later. But with additional footage it might not seem that way anymore. And Onward was actually my favorite out of everything we saw at that panel.
@MegaSoulHero5 жыл бұрын
Julia Delbel - Even after the footage they showed of Onward, I still wasn’t really sold on it, but I’m hoping I’ll still enjoy it. However, Raya and the Last Dragon was my favorite thing at that panel.
@JuliaDelbel5 жыл бұрын
@@MegaSoulHero Raya looked good too. I hope I don't jinx things by saying this but both Pixar and Disney animation were firing on all cylinders at that panel and I think they're really going to show up with these next few movies.
@Kettterer5 жыл бұрын
@@JuliaDelbel After all, it is directed by Pete Docter, the Inside Out director. It seems like that is his more modern theme in filmmaking.
@gracewatson70155 жыл бұрын
I personally think it’s because of the setting. Because we get “real world” films like Inside Out and Toy Story set in a modern world (obviously with fantasy elements) but run by humans. We also get fully fantasy worlds such as Monsters Inc. and Cars (set in anthropomorphic-type worlds with things we recognise today) not run by humans - even if they do make an appearance. With Onward it’s almost a crossover. You get this human world which is extremely modern run by not humans. In Monsters Inc., yes they had cars they drove, but they didn’t look like our own and there were just differences in our worlds but in Onward it’s very modern. The other part is that the characters from Onward are really human like. They’re not scary, but they fall in that uncanny valley class of being almost human, but not quite, which is why I think this film seems not quite Pixar-y. Rather, Dreamworks-y because of similar patterns like in Shrek. I hope yall understand what I’m saying!xoxo

Honestly I think Onwards gonna be up there with Coco here are my reasons 1. Tom Holland & Chris Pratt seem to enjoy their roles as these characters which makes me more intrigued by them 2. I LOVE fantasy movies which is one of the many reason why I love Disney and Pixar & this is 100% a fantasy film 3. Animation looks BEAUTIFUL Also I think people are a bit suspicious about this film is cuz not a lot was shown to us still, I mean we know a little bit like why the brothers are leaving, why Ian (Tom Holland) has a staff in a teaser pic & the brothers might be able to bring back their father and I bet it’s gonna be VERRY EMOTIONAL once they do it.

I’m actually really looking forward to onward, and I think the concept is really cool. Lee Unkrich co-directed Finding Nemo with Andrew Stanton, so it’s not surprising that he did well with TS3 and Coco. He’s also, like you said, a major player in Pixar, he’s just not at the forefront. But I’m sure we’ll see a lot more from him in the future.

A while ago I saw a video that talked about how Pixar characters are usually dealing with feeling obsolete, where Disney does more of the dream chasing, and you can really see that in Wreck-it Ralph and Toy Story and the like. (which is why Ralph feels more Pixar to me haha). So Pixar focuses on change and learning to grow with that change (Inside Out), and Disney is about chasing your dreams.

Honestly, the way the characters are designed is very similar to the way their designed in Home. Especially in the way skin and hair is textured. The same goes for the texturing of the the environment.

I think Onward feels the way it does because they're hiding something big from us. You have to remember that what we've seen so far is only snippets of the movie, and there's way more to come. Plus, some of the lines still have a pixar-y vibe, like "I'm going to meet Dad-?", point is, there's some distinctively Pixar things in the trailer, but not everything feels like Pixar because we don't know how it'll tie into the story yet.
