Sometimes, the language that immigrants bring with them gets locked in time even though, their descendants may continue to speak it. When the Pennsylvania Dutch came from Germany in the mid and late 1800s, they brought their period German and that's what their descendants learned. i had a friend in college who wnet to Germany between high school and his first year of college. He was shocked to fin out how much the language that he spoke had changed. By the way, "Pennsylvania Dutch" doesn't refer to people from Holland or the Netherlands. Somewhere along the way, the "e" got dropped from "Deutsch" (German) as did the "s".

Same with Texas German….a lot of German migrants came to central TExas and still speak German but it’s German form 100 years ago and sounds very antiquated and like ‘Shakespeare but German’ to modern Germans.

I also experience the same phenomenon in Vietnamese. The Vietnamese spoken by the Vietnamese who came to America from South Vietnam Pre-1975 is vastly different from the Vietnamese spoken in Vietnam right now. Just like you said, "locked in time".

I believe wll of this has to do with the fact that Pennsylvania has more English speakers than German. So, their weren't many people to able to affect the old language but it did change in Germany itself as they spoke German primarily so the language evolved. Same goes for the others in this reply section.

I lived in Southern California during elementary and middle school, and the midwest for my high school years. Spanish was taught starting in middle school where I was in California, but by that point many kids already knew some phrases and such as it was very common to speak Spanish around there. However, where I then moved in the midwest, it was a required for elementary students, then became an elective in middle school, and was one of multiple available language electives in high school In a shorter form: it already is a requirement in some places, especially those with more Spanish speakers, but even in some that don't have many speakers

Someone once told me that the reason the founding fathers decided not to make english the official language was because they envisioned American values outlasting any culture, unlike the Roman Empire. and it's supposedly the same reason they decided on a pretty generic name The United States of America, as opposed to being named after a family or ethnic peoples, as was the trend in times of old. so basically, regardless of which language or culture or ethnicity becomes dominant in the future, they will be loyal to the "American way of life" whatever that be in the future

Article 343 of the Constitution of India stated that the official language of the Union is Hindi in Devanagari script, with official use of English to continue for 15 years from 1947. Later, a constitutional amendment, The Official Languages Act, 1963, allowed for the continuation of English alongside Hindi in the Indian government indefinitely until legislation decides to change it. Not only that, but there's no such thing as official language in US because of the 1st amendment and I quote "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." In other words, since the first amendment protects most of your ideas(including speech), you can say almost whatever you want, in that case you can speak in any language you desire. The top 10 popular languages in US are: English, Spanish, Chinese(Mandarin, Cantonese, etc.), Tagalog (Filipino), Vietnamese, French and French Creole, Arabic, Korean, Russian and German.

We need an official language in order to make us one people. Multiple languages divide the people. By having an official language, it would focus and guide everyone to learn that one language. Tagalog and Hindi failed to unite all speakers of other languages since your govt chose the biggest (majority) language as official language. It causes jealousy for other languages. That's why English takes that spot. Only Urdu (Pakistan) and Indonesian can unite all ethnics 'cuz they are lingua franca. In fact the biggest language in Pakistan and Indonesia are Punjabi and Javanese respectively. They are smart choosing small language as lingua franca. Even Malay language in Malaysia failed to unite all races/ethnics since Chinese Malaysian and Indian Malaysia don't really need to speak it.
@thwb4661
@thwb4661 Жыл бұрын
This is funny. It seems Americans do not know that a national language does not mean “suppressing” regional languages and native/ethnic languages of ethnic groups living in a country. I guess that’s their mentality of suppressing people that made them think like that. I mean look at most Asian countries who are multi-lingual and multi-cultural yet they are united by and shared a national identity through a national language. India, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, Russia, they are all multi-lingual countries with a diverse plethora of regional languages and culture yet they are united by a national language. America is either just using this as an excuse or have no idea at all how ethnicity and languages really work due to how faulty their history and society is.

Unlike united states who can't have one official language, indonesia able to solve this issue by creating a new language Indonesian have over 300 known language, but able to have one national language. It's all because in 1928, indonesian agree to create a new nation (not state or country) named Indonesia, and create a new language named Indonesian Language using Riau Malay as it's base with loan words from other local language and foreign language added into it Since this new language born in 1928, the usage of this language widely accepted in the entire nation. Even malaysian using it before indonesia and malaysia got in a war in 1963. After 1963, malaysian using their peninsular malay language and abandoning indonesian language. That's why if you heard how Malaysian Language (formal form), it's sound exactly like Indonesian Language. Because this language created under heavy influence of Indonesian language before 1963 war
