As a 30yr old black man. I can say I love both heavy metal and rap! I grew up on Tupac, Biggie and Slipknot, SOAD and Korn. I feel like both genres are similar to each other. The deep feelings and dark emotions in metal music is echoed in rap. You gotta listen closer. And as a rapper, I got a lot of my inspiration from Corey Taylor. Music has no color and if you discount a whole genre becuase a certain "color" people listen to it. Then you are truly missing out

I flipped for Rocky George and the ST sound. The video had " you can't bring me down" on it. Even as a little kid I could tell he was a top tier melodic ass kicker on the 6 strjng. I want to write/ create a book about guys like Rocky, dudes so good who never became household names because they had integrity and played music that was closer to the heart than to the FM radio dial. When it comes to Goth Rock.. O.Children has a black guy as their vocalist.. I've exceeded past the point where people won't like me for "rebelling" of what's expected of me. I don't really get problems.. once in a while or blue moon, but for the most part I'm 5'5, 145 pounds, kind of feminine and masculine at the same time, but more fem than masc. I look a little bit like both female and male to, so maybe that's why it's easier for me, and I'm "attractive" and I look "Innocent" until they here my banshee screams. My favorite band is Archspire. I’m black and I love metal. Growing up listening to Terrence Hobbs was inspirational. Especially since most metal groups I liked didn’t have black guys in so when I heard terrence playing And absolutely destroying it gave me more confidence to just be myself and not give a fuck what people thought of me. I honestly can say that’s guys like Terrence Hobbs, bad brains, mike smith, and other guys gave me a pair of balls that I probably wouldn’t have had otherwise. Just great musicians regardless of their race.

I know a few metalheads in my community. A few of them are Black. One thing I heard from a friend of mine is that it's not something that's encouraged in the community. Hip Hop is just there... sadly... even the shitty artists. Everywhere you go, people just rather listen to Hip Hop. To me it was never about it being black, brown or white, I just liked the music. Because Funk was killed by the music industry, (still pisses me off) rock was was removed from our black brothers. Pop was what they were pushed into and rap was their breakout. Rap wasn't new. Hell, folk and country music did it for centuries, but kids on the streets took it, with new beat voice rhythms and broke out. I never liked rap music but I have killer respect for it. I really wished I could have went back in time to give those kids a bass guitar. I'd rater that on my streets than the over distorted fake bass that ruins.

Metal was very close to punk rock at the beginning. It was socially conscious, it could get political. I think the main thing that is going against metal is harsh vocals and what’s being said in the lyrics. Not every one can relate to Hammersmashed face, or Angel of Death. Hip Hop is more lyrical and touches on topics that everyone who grew up in that street environment can relate to. While it has developed at times into flexing wealth, that is something the culture still can appreciate, because the guy bragging came up from nothing and is now wearing Gucci and flying on private jets. While as a 16 year old who didn’t fit in, I found a release in metal. It’s kind of like it was made for me because I was an outcast. I was able to channel my rage through music. I grew up in a suburb and I didn’t like the same things as everyone else. I wanted to stand out in some way and metal was a catalyst.

Black bands go under the radar alot. Punk definitely has more of a black history to it than Metal, still love Metal, as a Gay black & Latino mixed man, the anger I feel from that experience can only be Quenched with Extreme music, and Metal provides me with that mental release often and has been so so so healing. Pain is a universal human experience, and even tho we don’t all go through it the same, humans share severe intensity for their own lived experiences, and even though white privilege is definitely real, individual issues like abuse, and feeling outcasted bare real human experience. Also my intro to Metal, namely Death Metal(found other subgenres on my own) came from exposure too my black girl cousin who moved back to Cali from the Florida scene. But Metal is in my heart & soul. Gay dudes are usually hella upset that (no hate or judgement) that pop divas don’t do that for me. So I’ve felt outcasted by even them. Just for liking Metal & Punk, but yea I’ma love metal forever, 31 and still go’n strong.

We're out here. We've been out here the whole time. I come from an entire family of Black metalheads/Blues heads. I was given a guitar by my Blues-playing uncle when I was 10 and the only place to go was heavy. I think modern capitalism sells Hip Hop to everyone as the one genuinely Black cultural signifier on planet Earth and a lot of us got brainwashed through that and environmental programming. There are big Metal scenes and bands in Botswana, South Africa, Morocco, Kenya and pretty much all over Africa. We are just as complex and diverse as anyone else and we do many things. Metal Music is certainly one of those things. The record industry never granted us chairs at the table like they did everyone else, so we are seldom talked about as fans and musicians but I do see that changing as of late now that the record industry is dead as hell. In the end the fans get what they want, and I don't think most of them care what our melanin content is.

Their are many bands that are black or at least have one or two black members. The biggest problem in my opinion is that a lot of Black people don’t know their history. They don’t know our relationship to rock and roll, which hard rock and metal are branches off of that tree. Also, by the time Jimi Hendrix came along around ‘67, a black person making rock music was an anomaly. That was only a little over a decade removed from Chuck Berry! So to a lot of us rock and its offshoots are considered white folks music. I don’t feel like that, I know what’s up. But to a lot of Black people we’re not supposed to listen to or play rock/metal.

I'm glad to see more diversity at shows. I work in a black majority community and I've had conversations about music with friends at work about music and in particular why more black folks aren't into metal. I think the biggest problem is people pushing this belief that this music belongs to these people and that music belongs to those people. The same divisive shit we always hear. I think more black folks would appreciate rock and metal if it weren't for that. After all, rock music, at its core, is protest music. It's music made by people who look at the world we live in and say "yo, this fucked up." I also think that rock and metal can be a way for black folks to talk about social issues to a large, predominately white audience.

Not all bands but some bands have a toxic gate keeping fanbase. It's gatekeepers,Cultural Differences, and maybe not having friends who are into Heavy Metal that keeps the Black Heavy MetalHead fanbase low. I've met tons of Black Metal Heads in ,Nu-Metal,a few Death Metal, Grunge and some in Punk but Glamour Rock and Old Heavy Metal you would have to be introduced through mainstream or An Old Heavy Metalhead since it was predominantly white and springs from European/White American 70s, 80s culture. I only got introduce to Glamour and Old Heavy Metal from having a white parent who grow up in the 80s. If not I probably would have just in interest in my generations metal and mainstream ones like Megadeth, Metallica,Black Sabbath.

I have an even BETTER question? How. Do. We. KNOW. whether Black people like metal or not? Given there are at least several hundred million plus Black people on this planet, it's kind of silly to think that there wouldn't be Black people into metal or some other form of alt-rock. Let's face it, we aren't exactly the image people automatically think of as metalheads, lol. No one can tell what I'm listening to when they see me, but I'm sure most would assume it's rap/hip hop. I used to joke with my ex that the cops would bust me if they saw one of my phone playlists with Kamelot, Helloween, Maiden and Symphony X on it because they'd think I stole the phone. Even Black folks who call metal "white boy music" are probably listening to Motley Crue on the down low, lol. The internet has made it easier for us to find and connect with other Black metalheads and bands with Black musicians, but as a 57 year old Black metal chick, trust we've ALWAYS been here. If anything, it's the INDUSTRY that's done everything to shut us out and erase our presence. They're the problem.
