Still pretty cool to see those old planters still around lot of them end up in the scrape yard

No kidding. I was surprised to find one so close to home. Four row planters seemed to have been saved more in our area that the six rows. I think mainly because they are so handy for planting sweet corn. Surprisingly, that’s what this six row’s job was for the last ten years. So, hopefully it won’t take much to get it in shape.

Now you can combine 3 rows at a time.

You bet! Just think of the increase in efficiency.

The one old planter l still want to try is a IH check planter for sweetcorn just to see if l can cultivate across rows as well as the normal down.
@richfarmer61432 жыл бұрын
@@AirplaneDoctor_ that would be neat! I bet you could. I spose they’d be planted in hills right?
@AirplaneDoctor_2 жыл бұрын
@@richfarmer6143 No, I've only ever seen it done once and they were planted normally, just perfect spacing in all directions.

@@AirplaneDoctor_ that would be cool to see. I haven’t seen any modern videos that had that in it. There was a nice 290 trip planter that had the check chains with it at a sale a few years back that I regret not buying. That would be super cool to look across the field in both directions.

Grease , oil, and good cleaning, it’ll work like a charm .

That’s what I’m hoping. It’s a neat old planter and I like the plate style for their reliability. So, I think its going to be a good fit for the farm.

Great addition! Hope everything works well for ya . We used a four row on the farm. Don't remember the model # but it was a JD
@richfarmer61432 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yeah, JD made a ton of planters. I like them, because they seem to work well, and there’s still a lot of parts out there for them, both new and used.

You will be covering 50 percent more ground with each pass. That's going to speed up your planting.
@richfarmer61432 жыл бұрын
With all that speed, we should have more time to fish, haha!

I have a 290 two-row with the shoe openers -- I'd like to find double-disk openers since I'm transitioning to Regenerative Agriculture techniques (and thus don't need fertilizer bins), but I will probably first try modding with a pair of coulters and weights to cut a slot in the winter rye. Get some grease and oil up the chains and you'll have a good planter. The books are very helpful to have, my book lists cast iron seed plates when most available are lystran plastic and haven't found a cross reference. Your planter may be new enough the manual starts with all the plastic plate codes. I found Lincoln Ag makes replacement seed plates and then there is ebay for used ones as I needed a bigger corn plate than I got with the planter (I plant heirloom corn, double to triple the protein content of the gmo stuff),

I didn’t know they made double disc openers for the 290’s. That would be neat to see. I would really like to see how the modded coulters work in the winter rye. Are you planning to use it like a No-Til planter? Also, thanks for the info. We’ll prob need it before I am done getting it around.

Is this something you wanted in the beginning or did your fans🎉make you get it?
