Recently it was the 20th anniversary of the death of Biggie Smalls aka Notorious B.I.G. Compared to other genres like Rock, Hip Hop has always struggled keeping the new generation of fans educated about legends. It seems like trap fans only know one Biggie track..."Juicy". The panel discuss:
- why don't kids today know about Biggie Smalls
- who's responsibility is it to educate the youth about hip hop legends
- Is older hip hop too lyrical for youngsters today?
Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

The problem is biggie was very lyrical. The new trap loving generation HATES lyrics, it's like poison to them. there is your answer, any other explaination is a bold face lie.

MR NICEGUY You get it... Hip-hop is the only genre of music where it's okay not to know the history or the greats that kept the music going. In NO other genre of music is it acceptable to not know who the greats are and know their music.

MrZLeroy92 yh and because hip hop has changed so much when you play a biggie song some younger kids I know think biggie was okay and think drakes the best or migos are the best 😂😂 I do like migos but it's not real hip hop I think that in my opinion there are loads of rappers in the uk that rap with lyricism and flow and would be great back in the 90s one right now who in my opinion is the best currently is wretch 32

MR NICEGUY I agree, my daughter's 18 and she has all Biggie's songs in her phone. She loved Pac also, and thinks he's handsome. She was brought up on both their music(of course without the swear words when she was younger)but I think there's lots of younger folks, who, loves both of them.

its all about what are parents played around us, its a blessing having parents who played classics growing up. my dad was a big Tupac shakur fan and everyday go to school letter to my unborn, keep up ya head and many more song that didn't have curse words played when i was in car. as i got older the hard hitting song like hit em up, ambition, under pressure where played around me and really aprricated the music my dad was playing. but on the other hand my mom was playing Biggie's party songs like big poppa, hypnotise and ect, all i can says is i appreciate my parent for giving the chance of experiencing real music because London don't play those type of music. biggie and 2pac are still relevant to me, i still play their music over anything from this generation. i get mad respect when i walk around central playing pac and biggie with my Bluetooth speaker. my generation need to do their research on who set the blueprint for their favourite rappers. i was born June 97 three month after big died it hurts me that ill never have the chance to see either of the GOATS perform in physical form. RIP to all the HIP HOP fallen SOLDIERS. #NEVERFORGOTTEN

biggie aint the goat,,,,he was good but he was very limited in what he rapped about,,,and alot of what he rapped about was negative and glorified the killing of black people and drug dealing. this is why pac gets more love and respect, because he rapped about a wider range of things, and had more depth to his music.

I think it's easy to say this when these people lived through Biggie/Tupac era. I remember getting Dial-Up Internet in 2005 for the first time. I have no older siblings and my dad is 50 years older than me and my mum is 40 years older than me. They weren't listening to Biggie growing up, so neither was I. I heard a lot of Tina Turner, James Brown, Jacksons, Diana Ross growing up. Even if I did know about Biggie growing up, my parents would have most likely told me to turn it off because of the lyrical content. When I was introduced to rap it was Lil Wayne - and yes I went back and listened to all his old stuff. I found out about Biggie's story properly when the Notorious movie came out (they also touched a bit on Pac) however, it didn't intrigue me enough. However, more recently, I've been binge watching Tupac, not because of his music - but because of what he spoke on. Tupac interested me more than Big has ever done, even though I can appreciate Big's classics, he never delivered a message for me. Plus Tupac's music catalogue is much larger than Big's. Another reason for young people knowing Big, Tupac, Eazy-E etc. is because they are no longer with us. Young people know Nas, Jay-Z, Snoop, Ice-Cube, Diddy, etc. who are also from that period too. I bet if they were still alive today more young people would be familiar.

Sad thing is that its only gona get worse. fact is, the internet, while giving new arttists a platform, has created a crowded market thus kids are not appreciating music. also, the fact that music is essentially free doesn't help anyone.

I don't want to be one of those commenters but, I'm 15 and I'm fully aware of biggie and in love with his music. I am a really big lover of hip hop and i made sure to educate myself on the history. However I can agree many my age probably have little clue on rappers of his time regardless of their impact. Maybe they might know of some of their hits. I find it really sad, so i try promote the music because i don't want their work to die

But 20yrs don't have an excuse in my opinion, they grew up with that playing. born in early 2000s majority of people born in my time are really familiar music that came out when we were babies. At least in my area 00s RnB songs are sung by people of my age with no fault in lyrics

Because they listening to that trash of today called music.. also I think everyone is introduced to Tupac or Biggie, if they listen to rap at all. You gonna hear them.. I was brought up listening to Tupac because my mom loved him and then as years past I got introduced to biggie (by Tupac biopic all eyes on me), I wanted to learn about Biggie and I've been in love ever since and he's my favorite out of him and pac. I watched biggie biopic when it came out but I didn't really care for him and I was a 12 year old girl.. I only really listened to female artists.

Some people just like listening to music. It's just a thing everyone enjoys. Not everyone is going to tease arch or look deep in to it cus tbh they don't care. If they like the big hits there's nothing wrong with that. I feel like it's even worse to pretend to like it or know about it. There will be some kids in the next generation who will not know who Michael Jackson is, or care and we will find that weird. People move with the times. A good thing however is that no we have the Internet as a library for past music so we will always be able to look at what was poppin in certain times.

I actually like biggie have a bunch of his songs but he's not GOD ultimately we must realize his lyrics were riddled with negativity. ..drug dealing pimping killing of other black men. ..those are the things that he left behind as a legacy. ...not impressive. ....can't belive you're even debating this. ..doesn't matter if you're nonsense rap is from this generation to that generation look at what we left this generation then wonder why they on some other shit....don't see anyone putting the great brother j or chuck d on a pedestal no wonder they don't respect us (other races and cultures )if you can't play your rap for your little daughter or your grandparents then you need to check yourself
