I completely agree. People who haven't read the book or really don't know much about the source material will judge this first movie and call it "a white saviour story that enforces imperialism" etc... and I'm not sure how the second movie will actually enforce these ideas and will it bring the point across? In "Dune the book" that theme of "don't make heroes" is much more subtle while "Dune Messiah" is much more apparent with it. That's why I think it will be important to have that part of the story adapted so it gets the point across completely and people don't start idolizing Paul and his fanatical horde. Also James McAvoy for The God Emperor.

Seems like the writers of the first movie did their best to foreshadow the real themes of the series. In particular, the scene where Paul is writhing in the tent and fearfully describing potential mass destruction perpetrated by those who follow him. He does not seem excited about the future or the choices he will have to make.

The first movie seemed to me very much putting a question mark on all the narratives of the characters. Showing the nuns as really guiding the narrative, and Paul’s disgust with a war in his name seemed to foreshadow more complexity. I haven’t read the books yet but I thought the movie was beautiful. Hopefully I can read it soon.

Haven't read the books, so maybe I'm completely wrong. But to me, looks more like the protagonist went from not wanting to manipulate the people for an idea that was force into them to wanting to go form Al-Qaeda. Don't know how you can take "white saviour" from that.

I personally wouldn't want a Dune Messiah adaptation without also doing a Children of Dune one. TV show or film, I'm not picky. Just keep Villeneuve involved for all of it. But I think there's too much important stuff in Children to not put it to screen alongside Messiah. And if that somehow launches into a God Emperor of Dune TV series and I get to see a human-sandworm hybrid, I can die happy.

Even the first Dune book's adaptation is in safe hands. "Dune Part I" has PLENTY of signs that Paul isn't and doesn't want to be a "Messiah" (though how much of a "naughty boy" he is won't really be evident until we see a "Dune Messiah" adaptation), something that even a lot of the audience - especially those paying attention - have already picked up on. I think you can safely count on Villeneuve to continue with his trademark "story-telling of ambiguity" in forcing audiences to struggle with the increasing moral ambiguity of Paul's actions in "Part II" and come to their own judgements about them. What I most dislike about Lynch's Dune is how it transforms Herbert's story into an out-and-out hagiography. No chance of that here. For what it's worth, I don't think a trilogy would give a full rendition of the full tragedy of Paul's story arc. For that we need an adaptation of Children of Dune as well. But given the time lapse between "Messiah" and "Children", it's almost certainly something Villeneuve would prefer to leave to another director to do later.

If the movies are successful, the studio not gonna wait a decade. But I highly doubt that Messiah film will be successful. It will be kind of Dune's _Last Jedi_ for casual audiences.

The ending of Messiah made me cry. I think it does complete Paul's character arc even considering the events of Children. In Children, Paul really just acts as a guardian for his son, warning him of the potential dangers, but his own story was already complete. He really did die in that desert.

The ideal plan: Have Villeneuve do Part 1, Part 2, and Messiah, then have him as the head/showrunner (though maybe not the only director. I want to see other movies from him sperate from dune) of 4 different miniseries covering the rest of Frank's books on HBO. Maybe they can dip into Brian Herbert's stuff too, but that depends on how much of that is considered fully canon Unlike GOT, all of the plot has already been completed before all of this would start, so the chances of having another "Season 8 Incident" would be a lot slimmer as long as HBO/Legendary/WB keeps their hands clean That might be a bit too optimistic, though. We'll see

Dune Messiah is a mindblowing and amazing book. First time i finished it I had to reread it right away to experience it properly. Only on my 3rd read did I grasp it all and can confidently say it is as good as the first book. But so are all the other dune books, especially 4 5 which surpass it imo.

Yep, I've only read the first Dune book (so far;) and I already agree. It's clear there's a lot more story to tell. It's a win win. Unlike the poor Hobbit movies that were diluted, like butter spread too thinly, murdering a great, concise story, "Dune" is a freaking brick with tons of potential and should be a studio's wet dream; not some dreaded sand worm.

I know this is old, but I actually hope it isn’t turned into a show. It’s pretty much confirmed they are making Dune Messiah. My opinion really doesn’t mean that much as I have only read the first book, but the idea of it being a show scares me with the lower budget and the fact that Denis is a film maker not a show maker. Not doubting that he could make a good show, I just think he might not want to. Honestly, I’m a Denis fan before I’m a Dune fan, so that’s why that worries me. Not that no one else could do it justice, but I think Denis’s work will be unmatched for a while.

You watch a different sequel of Villeneuve's adaption. Everyone can clearly see how Paul is portrayed bit by bit to become an authoritarian and no one in the film is truly a hero. Chani is probably the only character portrayed as lawfully good at least until the end of the sequel.

*I AGREE STRONGLY...BUT*, Denis Villeneuve already said that he never intended for a franchise but he just wanted Dune to be Dune Trilogy, BUT if the trilogy is successful enough, I would LOVE a tv series...but again, as Denis had said: (I'm paraphrasing) If You Put So Much Passion Into Things, I'll End Up Destroying It. So if HBO adapts children of Dune...I don't think Denis will be involved in that project (but who knows, he loves Dune too much to back out in doing another Dune project)

I absolutely agree with you! I think the first two books work really well as a complete story with a clear overarching theme, and that the next two books relate to each other similarly. A trilogy is perfect for telling the story of Paul Atreides. Let’s just hope it gets made!

Idk about this one Robert, Paul’s journey ends in children not messiah. And then making it a tv serie with what will be at the time big names (the actors), I see it as a tall order money/production wise. Don’t get me wrong I will take whatever Dani can produce but I think ending it in children (which can be two movies easily). And then going into Emperor as a series would be a better way of breaking down the narrative.

Nice video - I'm certainly looking to see Villeneuve round out his Pauliad trilogy w Messiah, which looks all but assured. My ideal would be to then see a second trilogy made up of the next 2 books, w Children as one film and then the next 2 films devoted to Emperor - I think these 4 books comprise a vast social experiment, with Paul's experience in some ways acting as the pilot, and then the full experiment and its conclusions unfold over the course of Children and Emperor, in the form of what Leto II is trying to achieve - I think the question posed is: Is human civilization actually possible, or is it doomed to destroy itself? Paul's evolution takes him to a place where he's able to perceive the vast forces of history at work, and he's unable to control them; Paul's son takes this evolution further and also manages to buy himself enough time and influence to fully enact his restorative vision on a scale that might work - so Herbert is using this vision to offer his reading of how history works, and then he takes another step back and critiques the vision itself, the implications of trying to assert control on this level, whether such an approach is actually beneficial, or whether it simply feeds further into the problem - so for me, the vision of Dune is comprised in those first 4 books, and his remaining 2 are more like a coda to his grand statement - somehow it always feels more satisfying to envision an adaptation fully cinematized, but you may be right that a series might work better for the books after Messiah - plus a series is open-ended, and it would be easier for them to use that format to then continue on to the other books - but it would be grand to see that quartet somehow realized on the big screen

Great thoughts. I'm hoping for something similar. I think Children and beyond are so bonkers, for anything to make sense you'd need to take some time with it. Messiah is what gives Dune its meaning. However, we haven't even seen the Sisterhood series yet (DV is supposedly the director for that first episode). Also, I'm not sure people are really up for seeing the events and ideas of Messiah. They need it though. We have a lot of leaders these days who just need to discredit themselves.

It's a Shakespearian tragedy that also subverts all the tropes set up in book one in a brilliant way. Messiah can't exist without dune, but dune isn't what it is without messiah.

There was a brief period where some animated animated movies were made to help offset the cost of designing the 3d assets for the spinoff show. Barnyard and Jimmy Neutron both did this integration type thing. I've always wondered if live action epics would do this as well. Dune as a trilogy, followed by a series, would finally do that

I think if Denis had been properly supported by WB and given the $ & time he'd have planned drafted and scripted the one book easily into 3 films and the 1st ending with Duke killed just following the novel that is internally split into 3 sections. I feel if HBO did like Game of Thrones using merging books each = a season, like Syfy merged Messiah(1st epi 2hr) & Children of DUNE(2-3epis @ 2hrs each) would work into 3 seasons 6-8 episodes each. Ima big Syfy Children of Dune stan fan, so many viewers to my posted clips state Wowo this looks like Game of Thrones in a fiew throne room like scenes. The whole series cost 20mil alot for then but imagine if it got that&more for each episode & CGI like recent GoT.

When Dennis Villeneuve first announced he was adapting Dune as a two-parter, I had actually assumed the first movie would be 2/3rds of Dune, and the second movie would be the final 3rd with Dune Messiah integrated. I agree that you kind of *need* Messiah to round out the idea of what Dune is about, however not sure how adapting Children onwards would fare...

It would have more meaning and be more representative of what the Dune books are actually about. The initial Dune is just the setup. The rest can be done as an HBO series, but making the final episode of the trilogy the end of Paul Atreides' arc would make a lot of sense.

Completely agree and making dune a series this early on damns it to be too generic. We don’t want to hand it off to some other writers and have another GOT situation
