I quit Duolingo after 250 days, and found it ineffective and a waste of time. I reveal why, and share what helped me make better progress & faster.

You are so spot on about the streak..I also aim at not losing a streak and actually not concentrating on learning.

I got bored of doing lessons in Duolingo but the stories are fun and engaging so I just use google translate to skip modules and just go back and do stories on legendary lately and focus more on youtube french videos and playing on a french server in an online game.

I don't have much experience with Duolingo. I have dabbled in it a little bit with Japanese and with French. It couldn't hold my interest, though, I found it took up too much time for little progress and it was too far removed from real language use. Currently I'm learning French reading Easy Readers, French Comics and watching KZbin videos spoken in French. I find it so much more efficient and effective.

I agree - great point that Duolingo is too far removed from real language use. Some phrases can be helpful, but there's also many strange ones out there :D Glad to hear you've found french content that works for you. Keep up the great work!

Been on Duolingo more than 1600 days doing french , russian, chinese and German but I haven't learned anything, it's hard cos sometimes there's no time. My native is Spanish but courses are better in English

I'm using it, and it is fine. Learn by doing is actually a valid method that we use in classroom learning.

It's not doing tho It's a puzzle the language doesn't matter replace with colours and it will be same

Duolingo is helpful for learning vocabulary and getting a basic understanding of the grammar. I have ADHD, and very the things you say are “addictive” in the way Duolingo is designed are exactly the things that I find most helpful in keeping me engaged. You act like they’re trying to trick people into studying more, as if they’re being nefarious by trying to make language learning engaging and fun. You’re right, it’s no substitute for immersion, but that’s because there _is_ no substitute for immersion.

I am so sorry to say, I disagree with you. Duo lingo will never make you fluent in a language but used with other resources I have found it excellent. My vocabulary has increased amazingly. I would advise people to forget the leagues and concentrate on working through the lessons.

I agree duolingo should not be the only use. Couldn't speak a word of Spanish, only seem to translate it. Trying to focus on Japanese with as much audio input as possible from shows and practise writing things down. I stopped learning Spanish because of losing my streak so can definitely have a negative influence. 408 days streak, please forgive me duo

roses are red, violets are blue, wait.. you uninstalled duolingo? he's coming for you! too bad oh, and btw I would recommend you to literally forget about the streak and ranks, despite their being "fun", it's always good to remember why you are even doing this in the first place. When I have too much on my mind, get tired and I can't satisfy enough with the progress (since one lessons a day is nearly nothing) I usually just do a month break just to return with way more motivation later c: have a good day everyone

Duolingo is good for practicing😊😊. You should use other material-method too. But there isn't any other method which is enough in itself. Use Duolingo as an addition.😊

Streaks, XP and leaderboards are not what makes you fluent. Constant interaction with the language is. Unfortunately, Duo doesn't reward you for watching a whole series or talking with people in your TL.

So at the end of your vid you said you'd like to her my thoughts... I would suggest to change your title and add a MAY. So, like "why Duoling may not work & what to do instead". I don't think anywhere in their literature they say they can be the ONLY source for you to learn another language. Duo is just a tool. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that this is for beginners. I 100% agree with you. Sitting in a class, is not the only avenue one should seek to learn a language. You just get to the point where you need more. In addition to Duo, I watch movies in the languages I'm trying to learn, listen to music, youtube channels, easy reading in the language, etc. So, would I be able to learn a language just by watching movies, or going to a class, or reading books. Probably not. I agree, it can be adictive and by itself not as effective as a combination of other resources. However, going to extend to say that Doulingo doesn't work amounts to say Duolingo is useless. So, before you make statements like this, I would invite you to first bounce your ideas with other people that may have a different perspective. Just with the intention to be more fair when you make judgement calls. You, youtubers, have a moral obligation to those who watch your channel. Just a suggestion. BTW, I love how you say Duo-r lingo-r. Have a great day!
