Since electric mountain bikes hit the scene, they've faced a lot of criticism. The most common thing being said was that eBikes are for lazy people, but Steve Jones says otherwise! He believes eMTB riding is just as demanding as regular mountain biking. Steve sees the motor as a bonus that adds excitement to your ride!

They are for people "you" choose weather to be lazy. Bottom line it's your input that effects how much of a workout you get EMTB or MTB. While there is a bit more to it one can work just as hard weather on a MTB, full power, mid assist or light. Also ur age isn't the factor people think it is. Truth is that guy in turbo might be fitter stronger and three times your age or not! Also your MTB might cost more than your EMTB

The huge difference is, an eMTB allows for a much, much larger range of "limits". In other words, if you were to ride a normal mountain bike and you go up a hill, you might hit your limit, have to get off and push and be frustrated. With an eMTB, you just add power and you get up the hill, still hitting your limit. It's friggin awesome for people like me at age 58. And I noticed over time, because I'm having fun and am out on my eMTB a crap-ton more often, my limit is going up i.e. I'm getting physically fitter. It's just win-win-win-win with me and my eMTB.

70 here and couldn’t agree more, traded my MTB for eMTB about 3 years ago due to lots of “steep” areas where I ride. I now ride more often & dont have to dismount so I get a much better workout. We do have some of our local county parks prohibiting e-bikes due to some abuse but hopefully that will change as those Abusers are weeded out and us “more seasoned” riders can enjoy the trails as we did when we were younger

Started mountain biking 2 years ago at 65 years old. I knew about ebikes and thought I would get one when I turned 75. Last summer, I got an incredible deal on a new YT Decoy 29 that I could not pass up. The YT ebike has become my main bike. My nearly new Pivot Switchblade hangs in the garage far too much. The ebike lets me ride with my sons and keep up. I've also progressed much further that I ever thought I would since I can hit so much more trail without worrying if I have the strength to make it back to the parking lot.

Did a 2 hour jumps sesh on my 26kg eeb yesterday and my HR peaked at 164bpm and averaged 134bpm and I used 1900 calories. I then did a quick loop of my local woods as still had over half of my 630wh battery left. That was hard work slipping and sliding in the mud and lifting the bike over fallen trees from the storms. I didn’t see one ☝️ I say 1 manual full sus mtb apart from a semi-pro XC rider who asked to follow me down a sketchy track and fair play to him, he stuck to my wheel and was thankful for the safe lines I offered. So, I’m nearer to 60 than 50 years old and he was a young chap yet we both left our egos at home and in our chosen ways, got out of our warm, comfy houses and got muddy. Isn’t that what it’s all about? 🤟😜

I noticed something after literally the very first trail ride after getting my Kenevo. I spent the usual 2 hours or so in the saddle, burnt off the usual 1000 or so calories, but the difference was I'd gone 30 miles rather than the usual 12-15 miles! So same time, same effort but over twice the distance. So in terms of effort and energy burnt for any given length of time is exactly the same. You just go further! I see the same at bike parks, I smash out as many laps as I can in the 3 hours or so my body lasts for, but I end up doing double the number of laps. If anything, after a bike park session I'm more knackered because I've gone faster and harder than i used to and my upper body is way more achy.

I'm 71. I live at 6500 ft in Utah where our trails start at 7000' and climb, relentlessly to almost 10000'. I'll go out on my mountain bike and I'll be at 90+% max HR for 45 minutes on a long ride. I can't continue to do that, so last summer I bought a Giant Elite 3. I can ride the same rides now at 70% max HR in less time. Of course it's easier! That's why I bought it and it's wonderful. Last summer I went on a long ride with my 32 year old son who is in fantastic shape. 20 miles in, he said, "man, I'm smoked" to which I responded, "Yeah, me too". He said, "really?" to which I honestly responded, "no, I feel pretty fresh, actually". Just enjoy it, it doesn't have to be harder.

I don't have ebike because I'm lazy. Lazy to remember to charge it, lazy to deal with extra component wear, lazy to wrestle the extra wegith to get it out of and back home... I'm also lazy to be bothered by what other people ride and are faster because of it 😁 Everyone should ride what makes them happy.

Its not lazy, it means you can cover more ground, whilst still physically exerting, leg only = 10 km ebike = 25-30 km with similar effort. Refering to trail or commuting, mtb riding is more intense, ebike or not, different challenge as explained in this video. Nice subject well done.

Lucky enough to own a MTB and an EBike - I use both, MTB for fitness and better riding performance, e bike for solo power hours, rest days when my legs are tired and just hilarious amounts of descending in my local woods. They’re around 30m in elevation and I’ll do nearly 700 metres in just over an hour 😂 I have done a Scotland trip on the eeb where me and a pal rode mostly in eco with trail being a treat for those punchy climbs, was great did hours each day with a stop at lunch to charge the bikes at the van 🤘 top work Steve! - final note the upper body gets a serious work out on the eeb however I honestly don’t think it’s anywhere near as close when it comes to heart rates, climb a steep hill in eco then go on a normal bike and the normal bike will feel like you’ve got an anchor attached. Then I will admit I’ve had mechanical issues with my motor. I feel not many people talk about it but it’s expensive if you’re outside of warranty and unlike a normal bike you can’t simply fix it yourself.

I have never heard a EMTB rider complain or judge an analogue mountain biker. Usually quite the opposite . I and my mates respect them. I don’t understand all the judgement on the trails and in conversation. I have worked in the cycling industry for over 30 years. I can clearly remember buying my first mountain bike in 1988. I went into the bike shop and said I want a bike to ride the trails. THATS ALL I ASKED FOR. It wasn’t about which bike would give me a work out. That wasn’t why I was there. I lived in the desert and wanted to explore it. Now to my surprise it was really hard. However I was young with lots of free time , didn’t own a car and got in shape and it got easier. I was always hard but I progressed. I didn’t ride for 10 plus years and didn’t want to because it wasn’t fun anymore. In 2018 I got a EMTB. Wow a game changer I now ride 2-3 times a week , lost 30 pounds, and did it all in turbo mode. I guess I’ve always been a cheater or haven’t ever gotten a work out on any bicycle. There is so much more to riding a bicycle then how much effort it requires. There is community , mental health benefits , exploring the great outdoors , and challenging yourself for progression. If a EMTB gets you on a bicycle, or back on a bicycle, that is awesome, you do you. Welcome to the fun side, enjoy the E-GRIN and enjoy.

When my mate got his first emtb I thought it wasnt for me, but didint cuss him out over it. Then I got 3x slipped discs in my back and wanted something that would help me get out while not worrying that I wouldnt make it back because I'd taken a turn for the worse in recovery. It was easily the best choice I ever made, not just with the road to recovery but in the way I thought about riding and exercise. I still own an analogue bike obviously and use that for local weekday rides, but when I want a big change in scenery the emtb is life-changing for me. I might be an outlier but I only ever use eco mode (unless there is silly hill or for the lols) and i've been riding more than I ever did before. If I pass analogue people on hills, I always slow down/wont be a prick etc and usually its fine, but you're always going to get the giga-bros 'oh with a batt tho yeah' (usually the roadie types on a day off - sorry any normal roadies catching a stray there but its true in my experience). TL:DR only people that comment IRL are bellends. Do what you want to do and as long as you're sharing the riding space like a normal dude who GAF.

No exercise? My Turbo Levi helped me lose over 100 pounds. On the flat I would typically manage 10 mph. Kind of boring. With assist I ride 15-20 mph. Much more fun. The last statement is right, you ride at your limit. And as I am in my 70’s, if I pass my limit I can limp home slowly with full assist. It’s a blast! And quite a workout! The dropper seat also helps the arthritis, but that’s another discussion!

100%. I just had a little time to squeeze in a ride and did 10.9 miles in 1 hour 9 mins (funny right?) and it was pinning it the entire time. Every trail. Speed the entire ride (well except when I passed people). It takes the boring bs out of mountain biking. Even the ride out- just a long boring climb- turbo mode and hammer. If you are a speed addict emtbs are the way to go. It is a different thing altogether. And the best part- because I knew I could get out super quick, I was able to stay out on the trails longer. And this was a ride I probably could not have done on a regular mtb bc I had just lifted legs heavy and was recovering. And when done- was able to go into the office with none of the after ride exhaustion.

I’m 100% agree but I also think that trying to argue which is type of bike is more hard work missed the point. Life is too short to care what other people ride. I’m in my early 40s. I’m healthy yet I still a choose to ride an eMTB only. Sometimes I push myself hard on it and other days I cruise a little. As a result I ride way more often and my skills have progressed faster (on average) than most of my friends that stayed on normal bikes. For my case an eMTB is the best option but I can’t deny that for others a normal bike is better. Let’s all ride what we want. Having said that of course eMTB hatred on the trails is very real.

Motocross is the most physically demanding sport in the world, yet people think you just sit down and twist the grip. Some people hit max heart rate just on the start gate. The best thing about my ebike is that I can get in a better, more demanding work out than the analog but can do it all again the next day without my body feeling like I was in a UFC fight.

I feel that on flatter stuff, due to the extra speed and effort required to throw a much heavier e-bike bike around the corners at a much higher trail speed, that you end up getting more of an 'all body' workout than you do on an MTB. The myth that e-bikes are lazy, is utter BS! Also, why no 4K video option?? 1080 video is a bit 2015 isn't it?

I do have issues with the lardy arses on them. But you do get a work out without question, these are heavy machines to haul around. Riders are surprised what a workout you get on an e bike. Go to any well known off pistes nowadays. E Bikes are the majority, anyone who likes climbing is a liar! Oh, I'm 65 so I'm definitely allowed one.

Ebbs have their place for some. Granted. Although i don’t see much difference in turning up on a KTM 450exe and riding mtb trails and making similar claims as to how they compare with mtb. EBikes are a separate thing to normal cycling. They just appear similar.

Steeper, Faster, Further, way more intense. Is how an ex dirtbiker and current mt biker rides an EMTB. Its addicting. And SO much fun! I am very sure we owe no excuses or explanations to the trolls who repeatedly call out EMTB riding as something for a blue hair. Those who troll EMTB riders will troll, they wont stop, they need to get a rise out of you and put you on the back foot. Screw em. .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................. And yeah, I ride manual road bikes quite a bit, we have had a small invasion of 70 to 80 year old people show up on E gravel bikes they use as roadbikes. They slow the pack down, it slows the whole ride down. I dont like waiting for an E bike to play catch up, not much. So there are different sides to the coin. But they keep showing up. Some e gravel bikes only go 20 mph, while the pack would be doing 23 or faster, we have to slow down and go into auto mode idling along. Then we hit a big climb and they dont seem able to pedal hard enough to make the e bike go up a hill very well. So we wait. My EMTB is a trail bike, period. I ride it with other EMTB's. It IS a blast! The only way to deal with an E troll, is to not answer, they really need to raise your hackles.

Really to me, an EMTB is just another bike in the quiver. I dont specifically ride E. I get at least 110 miles a week in winter on pedal bikes, road ,gravel, emtb, amish mt bike..............and KTM 890 goes out today, and a DR650 all tricked out. Bikes are all fun, every one of them. When a group ride comes up for EMTB I am flat out on it all day. But roadrides go every day in groups near me. A real roadbiker has way more patience than I do for going in a straight line on flat ground all day staring at the wheel ahead of them, that is more or less all they know. Then if the group does a climb its a desperate pecking order as the climbers go to the front. Little people are faster up hills. Endless competition.

As long as people get out and enjoy nobody should complain, but there are two things to consider. first one is pretty serious, you see now truckloads of beginners at places where only people who trained real hard managed to get. It really is a concerned in national parks, reserved etc, just too many people. emtb are motorized Vehicles and ultimately will have to be regulated, bikers on muscular are now paying the price because non bikers dont make the difference. second is, it is completely delusional to think that the effort is even remotely close to riding a traditional trail/enduro bike uphill. The data on your smartwatch are just numbers and mean close to nothing on the trail. I occasionally rent ebikes on Holidays and even eco mode is just mind blowing. I personally do find ebikes amazing, and will most probably own one someday, but it is a different sport and if people keep switching at this rate we will loose access to many places

The term e-bike should reference those bikes with throttles, cargo bikes, step thru frames, hub motor bikes, or any bike that is not focused on serious off road riding. The mentality of these riders is that they want to spend the least amount of effort to go for a ride. EMTBs require effort, but you can add more effort. You can session more trail features. You can do more laps and have more fun. In summary, e-bikers focus on the least effort, and EMTB riders have the option of doing MORE during their rides.

@@embn iv had a Carrara E vengeance rear motor for a few years before replacing the motor and battery ect for a yose aftermarket system as an upgrade . The original suntour system was decent for my needs but the new yose motor is much more powerful. Iv used it for commuting and for days out on bike trails (like the taff trail ect) . Recently purchased a full suspension E bike with the ep6 and yeah was expecting alot more power than the suntour&yose biased on the huge price difference and stats.But I completely understand they are two different set ups. the cheap yose rear motor gets me up the long hill on the way to work with less effort than the ep6 . I'm guessing it's down to the sensors , the more sophisticated ep6 requires force to increase power accordingly while the yose simply need slight turn of the pedals and the motor is at full power . Come the summer I'll start using the full suspension bike on terrain more suited to its construction and see how it performs .
@embn

The power outputted is based on cadence, your watts and wheel speed with the more sophisticated systems like you said! This isn't necessarily a bad thing because it allows for a more natural feeling ride (makes it feel like you're super strong, rather than being pushed along). Let us know how it goes out on the trails! 🤙

Yes, e bikes are lazy. I ride, a lot. The days on the ebikes to not come anywhere close to the same level of exertion as the real bike. Comparing my Garmin activity there is no real comparison. Attempting to justify that 'ebikes aren't lazy' is like calling computer nerds 'e-athletes' (that's a bit harsh). I'm not saying that you don't have to be in good shape to ride either way but my friends who own and ride e bikes vs the real thing are out of shape in comparison.

E-mtbs are way easier. Whoever is saying different is because they don’t push hard while riding an analog mtb. I have both and I’m spent when I’m done riding my analog however, I can ride twice as long on my eMTB and while I feel like I worked out, the feeling is more like I rode a road bike. Maybe the people that say is just as hard are really out of shape and they lollygag on their analog or they are saying this to other people to justify something. Either way is not as hard.

I think the point is (and the purpose of this video presumably) - that yes of course if you ride the same trail at the same pace, it's going to be [potentially] easier on an eMTB... But that fundamentally an eMTB allows you to ride either that same trail at a different pace (ie. you get more of, or at least a different, workout) or can now ride more challenging terrain that you would end up pushing up on a non-assisted bike?
@DinoAlberini
@DinoAlberini 4 ай бұрын
E-bikes are assisted motorcycles, their riders erogate much less power than bicycle riders. If you put an average e-biker and an average non assisted biker side by side, the latter would smoke the former in any bike related competition including the ones on e-bikes. E-bikes are tourism, not sports.
