As someone who has hunted turkeys, I can confirm they are a pain in the ass and way more clever than they should be, especially the big ol’ toms. Just like with fish, the only reason that Tom is so huge is because he was smart enough to survive that long.

Lots of animals will give up their young to a predator rather than try to fight the predator themselves. It makes perfect sense logically, from a survival aspect. If the mother fights and dies then the baby is about to die anyway from the predator (or a different one) or from starvation / weather exposure, so the species is down two members (one of them being a baby-producer) instead of one, and that's a losing tactic that can make your species go extinct. Whereas if the baby dies but distracts the predator long enough for the mother to escape, she can just go on to have another baby - so the species wins even though it cost a life. There's a good reason why protecting your young is a relatively new thing in nature, and even then it only usually goes so far before the parents give up. It's because it's a risk not usually that beneficial for the survival of a species. Humans are one of the only species on Earth that have taken the protecting your young instinct and taken it to the extreme we see today as "love" and the willingness to actually _die_ for our young, even when the odds are completely and utterly against us in every way. But we can afford to be this way because of the other advantages we've also gained from our evolution (throwing things, excellent communication skills, working together to protect a single young because we're so incredibly social etc) - and of course our sheer numbers. Which most, if not all, other animals just didn't get.
