Elon Musk, Facebook, MIT, and a 16-year-old inventor are in the race to read minds with computers. Currently, researchers can detect brainwaves and track electromagnetic pulses within the neurons in our brains. Will this technology completely change humanity and what it means to be human?
Big players like Elon Musk and Facebook have teased their entrance into a market that's expected to reach $1.72B by 2022. New research is pouring out of universities like Massachusetts Institute of Technology and The University of California in San Francisco.

It is a technology that must happen if we are to survive the coming of AI but we cannot, must not, allow it to be a tool of the corporate and governmental control structure. Sarif was right about one thing. It's in our nature to want to rise above our limits. Think about it. We were cold, so we harnessed fire. We were weak, so we invented tools. Every time we met an obstacle, we used creativity and ingenuity to overcome it. The cycle is inevitable. In the past, we've had to compensate for weaknesses, finding quick solutions that only benefit a few. But what if we never need to feel weak or morally conflicted again? What if the path Sarif wants us to take enables us to hold on to higher values with more stability? One thing is obvious. For the first time in history, we have a chance to steal fire from the gods. To turn away from it now - to stop pursing a future in which technology and biology combine, leading to the promise of a Singularity - would mean to deny the very essence of who we are. No doubt the road to get there will be bumpy, hurting some people along the way. But won't achieving the dream be worth it? We can become the gods we've always been striving to be. We might as well get good at it. - Deus Ex Human Revolution

I believe it can be fully achieved at zero risk without any surgery and no batteries... just like how prosthetic limbs have perfectly worked without any side effects which will involve visual (or audio cues) to achieve the correct focus. Technology has reached much further than most people can comprehend at the current moment, therefore... it's not that "we" are not paying full attention... there's just not enough information reported because it will require at least 2 hours to cover the topic enough.

This will be one of the critical, defining technologies of the 21st century. The human brain is an enormously powerful organic computer, but severely limited by weak output. The amount of data transferred by speaking or typing is very low. A direct high bandwidth IO between the brain and computer systems may be one of the few things that can let us keep up with AI. Regardless of the potential ways to abuse the tech, we're going to be in a very bad place in the second half of the century if AGI works and this doesn't. It may be the difference between working with AI or being replaced by AI.

I wonder how a device like this would work for indecisive people like myself. Any Ideas? Cause like, I'll be using my phone and playing music, then switch to like an article; however, in terms of what I'm actually thinking, I'll easily toss around far far more activities in prior to actually settling & partaking in a single one (and still tend to change my mind soon after...) I'm sure it's a matter of some clever scripting... ...just suuper luper anxious to know exactly how!

That will NEVER happen . To actually read thoughts , no way. That’s what makes us such unique creatures. NO ONE even knows what exactly consciousness is yet and where it is “stored” ... great work , but reading brain waves will never answer our personal thoughts On top of that, if they did actually do that , it should be goddamn illegal . Even if it’s something as simple as the mind thinking it wants music on , it doesn’t matter , it’s dangerous and it will get in the hands of the wrong people , like everything does ...

@TheWorldStageGeopolitics

Roman Klimenko there is a HUGE difference. A decade ago, I definitely knew and would have bet money that computers/ electronics would advance enough to the level of beating someone in chess. It’s a computer that can easily be programmed to learn the game of chess and learn all the moves systematically, that’s basically the point of a computer hence why there smarter than any mathematician on the planet... Anyone with a brain knew that computers will eventually be smarter than humans (the evolution of technology was occurring right in front of us), but intelligence and consciousness are two completely different animals... Building a computer to figure out our thoughts is on a whole new level. And since we can’t even figure out what consciousness is yet, how is anyone expecting us to teach a computer to learn about it . That’s what makes the human species so magical - which is our conscious world
