The director literally said he didn’t have to do much research on Mexican culture because he already knew what he needed to know. It is so utterly disrespectful for ALL Latin America. It’s a french man’s view on latinos. And the fact that most of the cast doesn’t even speak good enough Spanish is laughable. If this film steals the Oscar from I’m Still Here, we Brazilians will lose our sh*t hahah

This movie was met with a lot of controversy from critics and the general audience in Mexico because of how poorly done it was. This covered a topic that is very sensitive and personal to a lot of Mexicans and it was done in the most disrespectful and alienating way possible. Its like if some Germans made a movie about school gun violence in the US without doing any research. Emilia Perez went from being a Mexican man with native features, into a white woman with a Spaniard accent. The Spanish dialogue sounded like they google translated English phrases, and so much of it was bizarre and unwatchable. In an interview in Mexico, the French director had the audacity to say he made no research on the country because he said he already knew everything he needed to know. This was a movie from the point of view of a clueless French man who gives no shits about the country he is trying to portray and it is very obvious from watching this. There is already some amazing stories about transgender Mexican people out now, and we dont need this arrogant and unqualified Frenchman to tell their stories.

What are you talking about, ITS A MOVIE, a French one, the story is good, The music is good, as a Mexican, it's stupid that Mexicans get mad that the movie got "Mexico" wrong. When literally one of the most watched shows in Mexico is "La Rosa de Guadalupe". It's obviously made by foreign director with a foreign vision, and portraits a better story than most of the actual cinema in Mexico that tries to be similar to American movies. Like the whole "This is disrespectful" discourse is more about getting attention, pura pinche indignación chafa.

Can you IMAGINE if a Mexican director made a movie about Edith Piaf? French people would set all their cars on fire.

I just find the level of accolades to be quite annoying when there are trans filmmakers who made important and meaningful films this year like I Saw the TV Glow. The discourse reminds me of Crash 20 years ago during awards season.

Imagine if a Mexican director decides to make a movie about the USA with only Mexican cast playing US american characters, filmed it entirely in CDMX, and then the director says that they didn't find the need to research much about the USA because the already knew everything about it. AND! let's pretend the cast director says they couldn't find US actors good enough to play the parts so decided to go with mexicans and other latinos instead and the director says that they went to visit locations in the US but decided that the streets of the country they would like to portray were not ideal for making the film works, so they film everything in Polanco, Roma an Condesa. See????? Get it????

The mass hysteria of the year and the wrath of the Gods! the fire in LA is the cinema gods reacting to this film winning so many awards... and OVER SO MANY GREAT FILMS!.. It´s an all over the place mess of a movie.. It´s experimentalism(with a good premisse! ruined) in its worst, arrogant way... Like "Let´s just put up some unconventional pseudo-smart inventive cinematic stuff (and will be a musical because we want and we get more nominations!), fuck Mexico, fuck spanish language, fuck real movies done in it´s own countries.. and we´re done!"" ..The only award it deserves is suporting actress..... but Netflix did buy it and make the biggest campaign ever so The award goes to.. "Wicked," is the typical musical movie. "West Side Story." A typical musical movie. Cats? Another typical musical movie. Memorable for all the wrong reasons... A musical about a cartel leader transitioning to womanhood, both to escape justice and the idea of what a typical macho cartel leader stereotype should be is *not* your typical musical movie. This is what makes Emilia Pérez so atypical--and by extension, audacious--to the minds of the typical Westerner/American moviegoers, myself included.
@BenFriedman9162 ай бұрын
I will give you that the format in which this film communicates these ideas is not typical. I thought the story itself was straightforward. Cartel member gets out of the life and tries to hide detection and live a peaceful life, only for their past to rear its head. The story felt predictable even if the mode of telling the story was unique.
@carloscordero669527 күн бұрын
The aesthetic is atypical, but the movie itself is a chatgpt request for top most stereotypes of Mexico. The themes were not treated with respect, you try to redeem the irredeemable (a drug lord), and the script just sounds like it was translated from French to Spanish without any regard for the nuances of Spanish... and the whole Selena Gomez thing...

I don't know if it would have been possible for me to say anything about this film after just leaving the theater. It took days to allow the details to be absorbed into the entirety of the film. Then the characters, the music, the editing, the cinematography -- all having their impact. I suspect it was different for me as I saw it in a movie house -- where it should be seen and experienced. This is the kind of film with impact -- the films of the late 60s and early 70s. Films like BlowUp or Five Easy Pieces or The Wild Bunch. Anything by Kubrick Like 2001 or A Clockwork Orange, or Hitchcock's Notorious, or Sidney Lumet's Dog Day Afternoon. Pick a Greek Tragedy -- ANY Greek Tragedy -- or Shakespeare's Hamlet, or Richard III. LA LA Land, Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, Etc, Etc...Please take the time to step back and examine where this film resides in the context of 21th Century Film. Maybe until after the Oscars...

Thanks for the Annette shout out. This film has good technicals but the story is all over the place. That said, some people screaming like this a the worst film of the year or purposely offensive are living in a bubble. There are people purposely misgendering the lead actress and starting a campaign that she is “stealing” a women’s award slot. There are people who will not even bother to watch this even if it were great. Can we concentrate on the fact there are real haters out there.

Zoe Saldana was the lead no doubt. I liked the move but the nominations were reversed for political reasons.

Neither deserves an Oscar tbh, or even a Golden Globe.They should give them some sort of Lgbt cinema award if they wanted to, though I'm sure I've seen better lgbt-themed movies this year.The acting in this movie is atrocious. Those two barely hold their head above the atrocious script, Saldana especially. But there are so many superior performances by actresses this year, including some (like Lily Rose Depp and Nicole Kidman) who weren't nominated at all.
@zemlidrakona2915Күн бұрын
@@kostantza1 It's all subjective. I disliked Moonlight and I thought LA LA LAND was great, but they gave it to Moonlight. Why should I worry about that? I can still like LA LA LAND just the same. I don't understand why so many get upset about the Oscars. It doesn't really effect them.
@kostantza1Күн бұрын
@@zemlidrakona2915 People do have a natural aversion to hypocrisy, especially when it's so blatant. When Oscars were first among equals, there was plausible deniability about their motivations. La La Land and Moonlight are still high production, well-acted, solidly directed movies. In the case of Emilia Perez, I'd say the fact that they don't even take the pains to keep up appearances is what rubs people the wrong way. As well as that it's an openly insulting movie, whereas Hollywood has been plastering itself as a beacon of progress 🤮.When they don't even take the pains to deceive you, you can tell they're absolutely contemptuous of you, the viewer. Has nothing to do with enjoying the actual movies or not.I won't stop considering Nosferatu the superior movie of the year just because they snubbed it,and even if it wasn't, I'd love it all the same.
@zemlidrakona2915Күн бұрын
@ You just spouted a bunch of subjective statements to try to make a point. None of what you said is a fact, it's just your opinion, just like I have mine. Moonlight had very little story, but the worst part is the 3 versions of the main character did not seem to mesh at all. I much preferred Emilia Perez which had a real story. Also what collective "Hollywood" thinks or doesn't, has no bearing on the quality of the movie. You don't have to like it, but that should have nothing to do with whether someone else likes or dislikes it. That being said, I actually don't care if it wins or loses, but the amount of consternation it's generating is insane, especially since a lot of it is coming from people that didn't even see it. I'm assuming you saw it, right?

The "film" is not satire or trying to be a sarcastic way of portraying things otherwise it would have mattered. It shows the corruption, the worshipping of non spectacular individuals just because of their fanbase. It's ugly, it's cartoonish .

Just because something is melodramatic doesn’t mean its Mexican. Theres so much cultural nuance you need to inform yourself with when doing a story from a different culture, and its obvious that no such care was taken in the making of this film.
