Why Ennui Felt Unnecessary in Inside Out 2 and How It Could've Been Improved? Inside Out 2 mainly focuses on Anxiety taking over Riley's mind, with Joy and the core emotions trying to regain control. Ennui, representing boredom, spends most of her time glued to her phone, often ignoring the chaos around her. This limited role made Ennui feel like an unnecessary addition, as she didn't contribute much to the story. Interestingly, Ennui can control the headquarters' console via an app on her phone, highlighting her potential importance. Many viewers felt Ennui could have been more integral to the plot. For example, if Ennui had sided with Joy and the others from the start to challenge Anxiety, it would have allowed her character to stand out and provided more depth to the new emotions introduced in the sequel. @@ethantreadway9478yes and no spoilers btw in the one scene, where Riley is trying to empress Val, she talks about a boy band using sarcasm, which is cased by ennui and I think in another scene, if I remember right, she makes Riley act cool around Val by not caring as much and then again in that one scene with the mom where she does the simple answer of how camp was “good” even though it was nothing short of a disaster, so in some scenes she’s used for comedic relief, while in others she’s actually really useful but the reason she’s on her phone almost the whole movie is bc she’s portrayed as boredom so she doesn’t wanna get up. I mean there was also the Sar-chasm part too. That was integral because the chasm is the reason why all the rejected memories flowed into the lake of beliefs when Joy exploded it at the end. Also ennui was important to convey the vibe of teenagers. Without Ennui Riley wouldn’t have felt like a genuine teenager. Sure they can expand her character in the third sequel, but i think they gave her the perfect amount of attention in this one.

I feel like Ennui wouldn’t do much just by design. Boredom is a pretty sedentary emotion, so it would make sense that anytime something significant was happening to Riley, she would be engaged in whatever it is, and would have no need for boredom. Since we’re watching a movie, they’re obviously not going to show a awful lot of dull moments for Riley or the movie would be boring, so it makes sense that Ennui doesn’t get an awful lot of screen time.

for those of you who are saying that some of the emotions were unnecessary, In my opinion the productors made an amazing job on showing every emotion in there own unique "emotion", i mean anxiety taking the lead was so true about EVERYONE'S LIFE and with envy taking a big part on "controlling" riley by being anxiety's number 2. I do think they could have let embarrassment and ennui to control a bit more, but surely they productors made an amazing way of showing every emotion with the fact that there are NINE of them, in a movie that is only 96 minutes long. fear and disgust, in my opinion added alot (for those of you who said that they were only for the jokes) with the fact that in inside out 1 they barely gave these two a part of the movie (cause it was mostly focused on joy and sadness), and now in inside out 2 they gave EVERY emotion a big part!

Ennui is the reason why joy and others went back to head quarters fastly. Without Ennui's sar-chasm, they wouldn't be able to get there in time. Also if sar-chasm didn't happen, the avalanche would go to where bingbong dies, they'll be forgotten. Without Ennui's sar-chasm, Riley will not find her personality because all those memories the main five throws will not go to the stream. Although I agree, she lacks screentime lol.
