video games shouldn't be in the "traditional" olympics. e-sports should create their own "e-olympics" where every competitive game can be played by the best players of each country. imagine the money it will produce just from the sheer number of viewers.

Yeah same with Chess or Go, I feel like Olympics should only be for physical sports. I would be totally down for an e-olympics featuring Overwatch, CSGO, Rocket League, Lol, Dota 2 and other games too.

Jason Mason One of the biggest debates concerning eSports is whether competitive video gaming can be defined as a sport. The definition of sport has been attempted many times, and a universal definition has not been determined (Perks, 1999). Rather than a definitive academic definition, people refer to the Oxford English Dictionary (n.d.) definition, “An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment” (para. 1). The definition of sport needs to be discussed to ensure that eSports can be defined as a sport.

I'm totally indifferent, Olympics need gaming because the appeal of the Olympics is dwindling. The problem is, is that it brings in private enterprise into a sporting category. Sure there's branding but no-one owns 'Basketball', no one owns 'Baseball' but DotA is owned and operated by Valve. I don't know, just seems a little off.

I don´t think that would be an issue at all. In fact, being optimistic, the owners of those games that could potentially be broadcasted in the Olympics will be more than happy to allow this, since it enhances their game popularity, solidifies its fan base and fuels the steady growth of their business. In the worst case scenario, they will ask for royalties maybe, but I don´t think that´s a feasible possibility since the ones who will be more interested in getting into Olympics are the game owners themselves.

Anthony Clark Can you name a single ultra famous cricket player? Probably not. But they’ll go down in history just the same as someone like Brady. It’s the same with eSports- if you don’t care for it, you won’t care for it. You obviously enjoy football to some degree, and it’s mainstream enough that most people have heard of the most famous players in it. eSports isn’t nearly as mainstream, and the 30+ year olds of today didn’t and probably won’t ever care for it, that’s why they won’t know them. Not because of any sort of lack of achievement. Zero, winning 53 tournaments straight, setting probably the most impressive run achieved in the history of eSports. Faker, probably the single most terrifying LoL player to touch the keyboard. Daigo, the initiator of moment 37 (the Daigo parry), one of the most hype and technically absurd to pull off comebacks of all time. But honestly? I’m wasting my time trying to tell you this. If you don’t care, and don’t care to change that? Some rando on youtube won’t change your mind. Anyways, have a good one👍🏻
@kingdudethe2nd
@kingdudethe2nd 6 жыл бұрын
Anthony Clark it goes reverse too. athletes train all day to become the best at sports. To be a top gamer, you have to train all day to be the best. Reaction time, muscle memory, knowledge of the whole game, and enemy team analyzation are all required to be good. Anyone can pick up a controller and be good at a game. Same with sports. But in both, its nearly impossible to immediately be the best in the world. And chess, poker, and billiards are considered sports. Why not video games?

I don't think there's the need to try and push esports into the olympics. The world is catching on that esports is a thing (and has been for several years now). It's only a matter of time until the olympics realize how much money there is in eports and will beg to include popular games.
@YoJazzHey
@YoJazzHey 6 жыл бұрын
There were talks about having it in the olympics, but I’m conflicted with the idea. On one hand, I would love to see it on the olympics to showcase that being the best doesn’t have to be a physical attribute, it can also showcase the mental aptitude of people and Video Games does challenge your reaction time, strategy, tactics and awareness. On the other hand, I’d rather have the olympics focus on their own thing as a physical competition and esports would have something else that challenges the mental capabilities of a person. Maybe bring in the chess and poker players too.

Well 2024 is approximately 6 years away (saying 6 and not 7 cause we're at the end of 2017). Pretty sure in 6 years esports have already overtaken every single sport there is maybe except football, since it's still the most popular sport in the world by far. So I'd say the chances of esports showing up in the 2024 Olympics is pretty high. Specially games like LoL or Dota 2 which even have a viewing angle very similar to real sports. However, I doubt CSGO would show up since it's darker and more violent and we all know this "violence in videogames" narrative isn't over yet and they'd say it's unacceptable for those military shooter games to be in the Olympics because blah blah blah...

People here, including the speaker, miss out one thing. If Esports are in the Olympics, the esports players will not only be fighting for their clubs anymore. They are fighting for their nations. Plus, people should think about the definition of Sport before they say Esports should be in the Olympics or not. Modern sports and Olympics appeared because of the industrial revolution. People started to get richer and looked for entertainment. So rich people started sponsoring athletes and sports became a thing. Some people may misunderstand sports require physical exertion. But physical exertion is only required because technology -wasnt as advanced in the early 20th century. That's why we see a lot of track and field sports are dying because they are too boring to watch. If the sport is too boring to watch, big companies won't even bother to sponsor those athletes. If those athletes have no sponsorship, they can hardly earn a living. If they can hardly earn a living, they will quit. If the people quit, the sport itself will disappear, despite its intense physical exertion. Therefore, as all smart people can see, sports itself only evolves around entertainment, and then business from sponsorship. If one particular sport is too boring, it won't even exist, despite its intense physical exertion. So, physical exertion is only, at most, a peripheral requirement for sport. Like the video said, Esports are much more entertaining for teenagers and the business itself is only growing larger and larger, If Esport is not sport, then what is?

Anything which is boring can become popular if it's done in an impossible way. When someone scores a goal in an impossible way,it creates emotion,dopamine and not just entertainment. Similar is the situation in e sports. It is emotional,not just entertaining. The reason for doing impossible is the evolution of games from Pacman to Dota2. Clearly, you can see the difference. Both are entertaining but dota 2 carries emotion because of some of the impossible things that pros do.

I have been avid gamer my entire life (42 years.) I like to watch esport istead of regular sports. But I don't think esport should be included in the olympics. It's a bad match, and IMO, will only hurt the reputation of both. Something as traditional as the olympics shouldn't be modernized too much, it will take away whatever charm it has yet to lose.

While I do enjoy video games and eSports, I feel like having eSports at the olympics wouldn't really work. The Olympics are about trying to bring different countries together via friendly competition, but gaming really is more about empowering the individual, and so having teams based on national borders doesn't feel like it makes much sense. Gaming is so different, that I think gaming would be better off with its own version of the olympics. Think about it, you could have a bunch of different events in it. You could have competitions for competitive games, but you could also include speedrunning competitions and game jams. Being it the olympics would bring eSports into the mainstream, but eSports and the Olympics are two completely different things, great in their own ways.

I had the chance to go Pro for a few months in PUBG until I realised how much time it was consuming. How much stress and pressure it was to have many different leagues/tournaments every week while also having a lot of team practice. Keeping the team spirit up and get the communications right. Coming up with new strategies in real time and analyse the enemies. PUBG is not even as competitive as other games like CS:GO. Thats why I have a lot of respect for the veterans.

I really do not think that esports should be in the Olympics. The Olympics are more of a celebration of what humans can do physically then anything else. Esports just like chess is more about your mental state then your physical state. When I think of Olympic sports I think of seeing someone run faster then any other human, lift more then anyone, jump so far that you could swear they have wings. This does not apply to more mental sports and I do not see why people want to shoe horn esports into that. They are already getting recognized and even if they wouldnt be we all would still be watching them. Let the Olympics be the Olympics and if anything make a super event that would celebrate all sports that are more about the your mental state then the physical one.

Do you think basketball or volleyball are right for the Olympics? Success in these sports does not require physical superiority. They are games with a set of rules, and being the best at the game requires teamwork and skill. The only real difference between these and esports is a computer, but computers are a vital part of many current Olympic sports, so why not let them regulate the rules?

I learned how to look at people's point of view from Warcraft, I learned and started my interest in war history through Battlefield series, I made a lot more good friends in Dota than those assholes I met in real life. You are basically the one riding a bicycle while others are using a rocket.

The problem with team sports in the Olympics in general is that you are getting the best players, but they don't necessarily work well as a team together. Video Games like CSGO, LoL and Dota are team games meant for people who work together on a daily basis. You can't throw Hen1, Pasha, ScreaM, KennyS and Skadoodle together and expect them to beat a CSGO pro team, because while they may all be Tier 1 players, they aren't a team. Don't get me wrong they would perform well, but not to their full potential.

I feel like the weird thing would be that they won't really see much of a difference in skill level than their international tournaments. These tournaments already have the best players vsing each other. I feel like it would be redundant to have both an international competition and be in the Olympics. Also because esports is so recent they'll probably have those that were in international tournaments in their roster as they can't really train a new team solely for Olympics from scratch.
@kartikk7346

UrFriendXD The upside for esports being accepted into the Olympics is recognition. More nations will accept it as a sports. More universities will open up scholarships. More publicity for the various games. Besides Esports can made a regular at the Olympics. It would be like let's say athletics. An umbrella of various disciplines which here would be LoL, StarCraft, DoTA, CSGO, FIFA, etc. So while we might get the most competitive games, it will be a platform for the community to leapfrog onto the international scene.

Okay, but I would say that the online streaming numbers for Superbowl viewership are largely irrelevant, as the primary market for the NFL would be TV viewers. At any rate, insinuating that the LoL finals were 9x larger than the Superbowl is either misleading or negligent. Do like the video's message overall but I think he missed the mark a bit on a couple of the points, or at least didn't explain them with as much background as well as I'd like :)

I was wondering the same thing. This is a unfair comparison as the Superbowl's viewership is mainly from broadcast TV, not digital. Zightz well you may be right considering the fact that events like shooting do exist in the Olympics but that leads us to another problem, videogames are usually owned by companies and aren't in the public domain so a certain esport would exist only as long as the company runs the game, which means that the Olympics can never add in any esport (except maybe electronic chess lul) thanks to videogames being owned privately.

I’d love to see Esports have its own sort of sporting event, in which like the Olympics, many different games and events held tournaments in a similar fashion to the Olympics. I think truly making it an Olympic sport wouldn’t work. One reason being that the biggest esports in the world are team based, and require great synergy in order for teams to be effective. Such as in Overwatch, where not being compatible with your team can make winning almost impossible at the top level. And also games like dota and CSGO have violent themes throughout the whole game. And as we’ve seen in the past not everyone takes kindly to the idea of violent gaming. These reasons and I’m sure more I’m not smart enough to comprehend would make it very difficult for games in an Olympic environment to thrive. I think however something similar to the Olympics could work very well, and due to the massive amount of competitively played games, It would allow for more games to have tournaments, as I believe that if gaming was in the Olympics, we would only see games such as CSGO, Dota 2, LoL, etc.

Buddy, you say this now, but you wait 40-50 years and “regular” sports will be in the gutter compared to esports. Have you seen the poor NBA finals? They’ve lost to the LoL World Finals every year for the past 4 years now when it comes to viewership. Pretty sure they annihilate every sport when it comes to views on computer or any device other than TV. All we need to wait for now is for ESPN and major sports providers to show esports more regularly than the more random viewership it has these days. Things and history changes, and frankly I don’t give a damn if a sport is historic or not, I’ve never found watching sports interesting because I always told my dad I’d rather go play something instead.

So, im just telling you guys, here is the issue with eSports. Not that this will ruin it's Olympic chances, but this is the truth. The reason eSports are still being considered and not confirmed are because all of the popular games, are violent. Csgo puts terrorist against counter terrorists, data congratulates players by saying "ultra kill" and many more games that promote violence. So, that leaves sports games like madden or Fifa, but those don't have s much of a following, so the Olympic organization is kind of screwed. They want to add eSports, but they don't want to "promote" violence at the same time.

Why are people trying so hard to make esport into "sport"? There is no reason to merge the two, they focus on completely different things and have nothing in common apart from being "competitive". Sports aren't a private IP and many sport organizations and events have national funding. Meanwhile video games remain the property of their respective owners (Blizzard for Overwatch/SC2, Riot for LoL, Valve for CS:GO/Dota2 etc). Those companies pay for and organize events for their games to raise viewership and player base, which directly relates to their revenue. You can't fund a private company from taxpayers' money.

Esports are a sport. I don't see why we're discussing this. If shooting, dart and billiard are sports, esports definitely are as well. The real reason Chess isn’t an Olympic sport is because no one watches it if esports was just in the Olympic from the start no one would question it if it’s fun to watch but older people grew up thinking it’s a nerdy to play video games when in this new generation it’s absolutely normal

Chess isn't olympic because it's boring to watch. Just try to watch some pros play Chess, you'll wish you were painting an impossible painting instead.

I like video games and all and it's good that people can play it professionally. But I don't understand how people support esports replacing traditional sports. Kids are playing outside less and less. That's not progression, that's a problem.

Just because people play esports it doesn't mean they are unhealthy. Look at freakazoid, tyler1, pashabiceps, kjaerbye and others. They are likely in better condition than you. Esports leading to bad health is a myth. Its the mindset of the player. If they don't care about being a slob, then it's there fault. Not esports fault.

Who said replacing except for you? Less and less kids outside? Says who? Just as many as ever play outside.

I think it's more the other way around. Kids are less and less allowed outside (without supervision, which amounts to the same thing since no one has time to constantly supervise kids - police have taken 10-year olds for walking without adults, which is insane), so they turn to video games instead.

Mardy I think the main reason kids arent going outside as much isnt because of esports but instead this generation of parents that are bussy and just buy phones and tablets to their kids to keep them entertained

Minute 2.00 Just was thinking that esports aren't that great it's just that you can watch it for free on various platforms while to watch other sports and even the olympics you have to pay the damn ppv. Good to see that it actually the price that is driving it down and not that now we are all sedentary
