He's talking about the Schengen area not the E.U. The Schengen area is an agreement between several countries to create a common entry and exit policy to remove border controls. Some EU countries like Ireland , Cyprus or Bulgaria are not members and some non EU countries like Norway are. Before Trudeau became the Canadian Prime Minister Canada thought about becoming a Schengen State becuase only European countries can be EU members but there is nothing in the Schengen Treaty forbidding any country in the world to become a member State. The UK and Ireland never signed the Schengen treaty , the European Union doesn't have a common visa and border control policy , whoever enters Ireland from outside the EU is up to Ireland and was up to the UK , the UK as an EU member could not and Ireland can not refuse entry to an European Union citizen because they signed the treaty of the European Union that gives freedom of movement to all European citizens. Iceland as a Schengen State can not deny entry to a Greek but can deny it to an Irish , the Irish can also deny entry to an Icelandic but can not deny it to Greek. Immigrants from outside the European Union , including from the Schengen area , when the UK was an EU member were an UK choice and immigrants that enter Ireland are the Irish government choice the E.U doesn't have a toss to do it and neither the Schengen area because Ireland is not a member. If Ireland decides not to ask entry visas to the Afghans , Chinese , Namibian or anyone else it can , they are just not allowed to travel to the other E.U countries. The UK had and Ireland has it's own visa and border control policies to non E.U citizens.
@lazrseagull545 күн бұрын
That's because the UK never joined the Schengen zone. You can normally drive from Portugal to Finland without a passport as there haven't been checkpoints on the motorways, train stations or other roads or footpaths etc. for decades but to get into the UK, you always needed to bring a passport or EU ID card as they had booths set up to check everyone at every port, airport and train station entering or leaving the UK, even when they were in the EU. This kind of thing would be a nightmare on the continent as people living in border towns would have to bring documentation and join a queue for a checkpoint just to get to work, school, go shopping or just to visit their friend across the road. They would have to split the entire town in two. There are residential roads where the traffic lane going one direction is in Germany and going the other direction is in the Netherlands with homes and shops on both sides. Train stations would have to make space to build seperate platforms for train lines that happen to cross a border. They would have to build fences along the borders through fields and woodlands. This would just be really awkward to implement. This plan to close borders for 6 months would likely only be the case on motorways and main roads that have space for such a thing and maybe they'd have border police do random checks on trains, Which is what usually happens when they close the borders. I just can't see them building fences all over the place.

In exchange for the trillions of euros that flow East and South, sadly very little is coming in return.

This makes a lot of sense now. I have traveled twice in the past year and experienced border checks. I took a bus from France to Poland with 0 checks. On the return trip we were stopped and passport check not once, but twice within Germany and a third time upon arrival in France. I took a bus to Italy from France last month without a border check on the way there but on the way back into France we had to pull over and every single person and bag (including our luggage under the bus) was taken off the bus and checked.

Coming from the UK, it's normal to have to show your passport to get into another country. And thanks to Brexit now I get a stamp in my passport :) I quite like the new GK, but in ways miss the old one. The complicated graphics were part of the appeal. I'm sure they took a lot more time to produce, so I can understand why he decided to show his face and talk to the camera. But I'd like to see some of the old style stuff once in a while.

Only since the early 20th century (specifically the outbreak of WW1). Prior to that most people could more or less freely move between countries. It was only in 1920 that the passports that many nations started issuing at the outbreak of WW1 became standardized at the League of Nations. In the early 20th century before WW1 and in prior centuries, people could just uproot and move to another country. That's how a huge part of the initial migration to America happened and there were no border checks (and passports didn't exist).

@@aruak321 Most people? I'm not sure how to reply to such an idiotic answer. Most people barely moved from their village, never mind country. Yes, some rich people travelled around Europe, but they would need some kind of travel document to show where they came from.
@aruak3214 күн бұрын
@@rogink reading comprehension... I said most people could. Not that they did given the greater difficulty to move. However that still didn't stop millions and I'd argue that America would never have become the country it is without those millions of "illegal" immigrants migrating for a better life.

I don’t mind getting rid of Schengen and return border controls to sovereign nations. As EU citizens we would still be allowed to cross borders within the Union without much hassle.

pre-schengen people could still travel across borders just fine. This is a flawed reasoning. UK macaronis and german upper class travelled to italy on their "education tour" and pilgrims has always been allowed in europe to travel unhindered by the state. The strong border controls was set in place during the Franz joseph era and the age of nationalist revolution of 1848 by Franz Joseph von Habsburg to supress the minorities of the austrian empire. Then it spiraled out of control fomr there.

in September 2018 I was stopped at a border checkpoint in a small border town on the France-Italy border in the Alps. So, they've been largely open but there has been some control for a while. Mainly looking for smugglers who tend to take roads less frequently traveled, where there aren't cameras monitoring the roads

In the 80s the EU didn't exist. I lived there. There used to not be any visa requirements for travel but there was always borders where you had to show a passport. France was the first country to require a visa, if I remember correctly, but we knew a back country road from Germany to France. There was never any of this open travel between countries without having to give a passport at the borders. The exception were those back country roads, but there were very few of those. The visa requirements started because Palestinian terrorists were blowing up Europe in the 80's, they've been terrorists for decades. I got taught how to look for a car bombs when I was in the 7th grade. Europe was way better then, pre EU, than it is now. My last trip was in 2018 and I don't think I'll ever return. It wasn't safe walking alone after dark, couldn't even leave my hotel room. What a shame, it used to be great. I grew up there. You're kinda off on your facts honey.

Not too long ago it was trains and airlines as well. And yes, it matters tremendously how the removal of these checks and relaxed immigration policies have affected the whole of Europe.

They all do it under pressure of right wing parties. In Germany the centrist-left wing government did afraid to lose ground to the conservative and far right parties. France the same. In The Netherlands it's being implemented by our far right-populist government because they convinced themselves we have an asylum seekers crisis (the influx hasn't been as low as it has been in years, but it suits their asylum-seekers-and-muslims-are-to-blame-for-everything framing).
