Some people buy or use apps their idols or generally famous persons use because they think if they do, their life will be transformed. Like setting up an office just like Steven King has. If I only use the same desk and chair my pal Steven uses, a best seller will flow from my iPad. To be productive and get your thingy done, a pad of paper and pen works well. Most people tend to emulate others and success will never greet them at the door. That hundreds of companies use Notion means very little to me. I read about corporations using Notion and their logos appear in many other app web sites as well. Sorry to rant on and on.

Notion is big for a reason. When i found it about it, i wanted to cry because i immediately thought about how freakin useful this would have been if i knew about it back in highschool and college. The organization, the databases, the side-view options to view two pieces of data at the same time, unbelievable. I've got my own customized dashboard now that i know exactly where everything is and where to go when i have a sudden hyperfixation pop up. The three main things you mentioned in the video are true, but i think there's also something to be said about how Notion is just a really really good product. When it works for one's organization method, it works amazingly.

@@charlieburton9610 well most organizations use a few things: communication, database (organising products, etc), some docx sw/plain note taking probably some other projects. Notion now has all of these - it has live chat, comment function, doc editing, can have even the hierarchy of the company built in, nowadays also has some excel extensions and can do marketing charts easily. I dont own a business but I am a student and I use notion database regularly for my readings. Notion first have database that you need in any readings manager but what tbh sets it apart from everyone is quite simple: its fully customisable and it doesnt look like it was built in the 90s. If you know what you are doing, you can really make/manage everything you want there. The hate imho comes mostly from people who just doesnt know what to do in it - because you can basically program it how you want and most people have no critical programming skills. In the negative ways its the same as any other tool - you can spiral into using it too much, but that can be a problem even with simple thing like excel (which is what most companies are a victims of, everything needs to have its own spreadsheet :D).

@@servantrose Depends on your priorities. If you want utility from it, you'll get it. If you're just building something for the sake of it, adding new aesthetic things once in a while, eventually you'll run out of ways to make it more aesthetic and with it, the interest to keep going.

You nailed it. Ikea effect + Maslow’s hammer. There’s one more effect, that I might call the Lego effect: if, instead of making a deep, narrow tool, you make a wide shallow tool, like Legos, that lets you build anything with it, that has a real value in its flexibility. Minecraft, HyperCard, pencil, and paper, HTML, and programming languages all have this quality. Having bought a couple Notion templates, however, there is one big caution - it takes a lot discipline to build something that someone else can use.

Take this with a grain of salt, because I’m a Notion fanboy - but I think a key reason people love it so much is because of how powerful the relations are. What you mentioned certainly play a part, but leveraging the database relations really puts Notion above and beyond any other productivity tool. I think putting to-do lists and other items into a separate app - essentially in a vacuum - is a huge mistake and a missed opportunity.

I totally get the appeal of Notion, but it is so daunting to get into. Everything being on the cloud meant that it took a while to load what I wanted quickly; making it extremely cumbersome. Obsidian is a lot easier to get into, but the linking of notes isn't really useful until you get a handful of notes. I did try to get most of my notes on there, but I ended up just using Samsung Notes for everything. Both Notion and Obsidian are really cool for what they are. But they seem like solutions for problems I don't really have.

What I always suggest is this: new Obsidian users should turn off most plugins and stop downloading countless themes. Obsidian is feature rich but only as complex as you want it to be. Features will be there waiting for you. Obsidian can be a featureless note taking app or a complex nightmare, so try to reach a comfortable balance and learn the app.

In a way, Notion became that hammer for me. I could organize everything that I had spread all around the computer into a single place and all that even became searchable. I replaced random todo.txt files, Word docs, Excel spreadsheets, Evernote's .... notes. It surely is not great at everything, but it is enough to keep me organized (or at least feel like it). For most stuff the setup was minimal, but moving the notes with tags was quite the nightmare 😅

Great video on the ‘why’ perspective of Notion- I've been trying to sort this out for a while now. I've circled back to Notion no less than 5 times (and ultimately forgot about Notion shortly after each time) over the past 2 years and just can't get into using it. I've watched tutorials, purchased templates, spent hours trying to set up my own systems within it, and at the end of the day it just wasn't for me. exactly what you said but notion kinda worked out for me. in the beginning, my adhd brain found it so attractive. i immediately downloaded, learned all about it and made these very pretty pages. for a whole two months all i did was change it or add new things and never used them. when i was close to perfecting my setup like having everything i wanted over here and finally reaching that level of satisfaction, i took a single glance at my tasks page, it overwhelmed me so much that i deleted everything. well i started again a month later or so, with the simplest setup ever and gradually added more but still kept it super simple. i often tell myself "no changing at all" whenever i am on there. i take out like 2 hrs every end of the month for the customizing. so ya, i have been using it very consistently.

I came up with an approach for taking notes, using simply text files and file folders on my pc. I use notepad++ to view the files, and to do searching when necessary. I wish the searching was faster, and I rely heavily on tabs, but otherwise it is sufficient.

In any relational database program like Access and Base you start with tables, queries, forms and reports with quaint user interface and somewhat burdensome user experience in getting to what module you want. Notion made this easy with simplicity and aesthetically straightforward for non-programmers to program and set what they like without having to construct modules like programmers do. That's the beauty of Notion.

I had a similar experience with Notion, ended up with Obsidian and now it's one of my most essential applications next to Firefox and FreePlane. If you like a more minimalist approach (and markdown), where the tool doesn't stand in your way in the beginning, it's really easy to start small, just collect all kinds of short notes in Obsidian and get into the more complicated advanced stuff bit by bit or when you really need some feature (and there's a bunch of plug-ins for almost every use-case imaginable). If you rely on tables a lot, Obsidian might not be the optimal tool, though (there's probably a whole lot of plug-ins and workarounds for simple to mid-level use of tables but that wouldn't exactly make for a simple and easy to use experience for a new user).

From my perspective I did everything you mentioned in the video (metagame, ikea effect, etc.) but it effected my productivy. I was barely studying 3 hours a day and trying to plan my next week and next month. But never accomplishing any of the task I wrote. When i started to use notion I could all the statistics and it was fun to use and building a page made me feel great, ikea effect.

Notion is to organization, what Excel is to managing data and calculations. It's so fast to build interesting layout that for sure you want to do everything with it. It's the same that happens with Excel. Doing calculations is the minimum effort for the program. You can do whatever you want with it, even managing files or making videogames (it has Visual Basic inside). I'm a devoted user of Notion since before it became mainstream on youtube.

I did a deep dive into Notion, and then decided not to use it because I saw dozens, maybe hundreds of complaints that people lost all their data, either when trying to sync, or updating something. Also, it didn't seem to act the same way on different devices. And maybe wasn't even available on all the platforms. There seemed to be no guarantees about reliability. And IIRC, at the time there was not an option to sync to the cloud service I use. This was last year. So maybe everything is different and better now. I can't remember if cost factored into my decision.

I stumbled upon notion by accident. It’s been an absolute game-changer and I didn’t know how popular it is until now. I love how customizable it is. I originally started using it just to categorize and store video ideas but now I use it for my every day journal, prayer journal, and more. It’s so great to have a one-stop shop for all this stuff and it can easily be loaded up on any platform and it syncs super well. I’ve found Notion to be quite useful but daunting to build a system in. In the end, after figuring out what it can and can’t do easily for me, I decided to use it only for aspects of organising information that fall into a certain level of complexity that is within Notion’s sweet spot. Anything that is too complex for Notion gets a bespoke solution, anything too simple to bother with, I don’t bother with.

I fell into the Notion vortex realizing soon enough that my task management was doing great with Things 3, and that my digital filing system was working great with Evernote (which I've been using for over a decade) both are those dedicated apps you mentioned. Why would I transfer my to-do lists, my PDFs, my uncountable Docs and Notes to an unknown, harder-to-grasp app, when the ones I'm using work so well? Yes, Notion is a very good-looking, appealing app and I'm sure when I run into the right situation it can prove very useful. Very interesting concepts the Ikea Effect and Maslow Hammer. I did like learning about those! So here's my like my good man!

I really like notion for the cloud based database aspects without any infrasture needed. I totally agree, It's not great for tasks since it doesn't have great recurrance, reminders, etc.

But it does. You can set a task to be recurrent how you want it to recurr, put reminders on it, setting the date, hour of the reminder. If I'm not wrong, you can make it send you reminders through Gmail as well. Havent tried it, but yeah.

It does, I set up reminders and daily tasks that update itself in the calendar every midnight on the days I want it done so when I wake up I just need a glacé to see what I need to do, it’s completely automated all I need is to check them once they are done.

Notion isn't perfect, but it's the best cure I've seen so far for the lack of well-rounded programs for organization/planning/note-taking, etc. I hate having to have a thousand tabs open at once to organize my information. I love how it condenses all these services into one program, instead of having to sign up to a bunch of websites that you'll probably forget after one use.

I tested Notion 3 month ago for my personal use and hated it for being awkward. But since everybody on KZbin seemed to be in love with it, me hating it felt king of weird. I thought maybe I didn't take my time to appreciate how cool it actually is. This video resolved my internal conflict and I'm very grateful for that )

@@ballooneyjr4294 maybe I totally misunderstood the concept of notion. It was advertised to me at the one solution to replace almost all the other productivity apps. That’s not the case, at least for me. I think notion has two advantages : To create some kind of personal or internal wiki, plus you can use it as a simple blogging CMS. Depending on the usecase of the website, I would rather go with Hugo or Ghost. Also, I don’t need a wiki but a nice haptic notebook and a nice ink pen.

I've done the reverse of what you've said here. I've gone from a dedicated task manager to Notion simply because with Notion, I can view my ToDo list in as many ways as I want. Notion's primary advantage is that it's a Rapid Application Development tool. With dedicated task managers, you're locked in to whatever they give you.

If I had to guess it is just a simple snowball effect. You get a certain critical mass of marketing and investors and it barely matters what the product is. Notion seems to have just put a bunch of products that already exist into the same place. It is a time sink if you already have your things in order and like you said you may find that you simply prefer the organizational strategy you were using before. I'll look into using Notion if I ever start a team but there could already be something else better for teams.

This is an incredible oversimplification of why people are obsessed with Notion. Of course to some extent, these psychological principles absolutely but it’s not why people are obsessed. For those of us who have 8 different notebooks, notes scattered through our phone, 12 apps where we keep content that we constantly refer to, multiple creative projects, and more to keep track of Notion quite literally is the game changer people claim it to be. The reason is because it’s built like a wiki and most of the other software the founders set out to replace are built using a static database on the backend. You’re literally building a personal and/or professional wiki for your life. Everything is able to link back to itself, pages nest, there are pages, the pages can be as long or as short as you need them to be etc. It’s certainly not perfect at or the best for every single job, but it really is great for a significant portion of them for a lot of people and the best part is that if it’s just you and you don’t mind the upload size limitations, it’s free.

I started using notion because of a KZbin video, now I'm using it basically everday day. I don't use most of it features, the thing that I enjoy the most is creating pages and sub-pages related to a topic, concepts or ideas, but all simple without templates (I always end up editing the pages myself). For quick reminders and to-do's, I use my phone most of the time. But you know what's funny? When you get confortable editing/styling notion at the same time that you write something on a new page, it's HARD not to sell notion to anybody, my classmates probably hate me every time that I talk about notion.

For personal use and small team project, I love Notion. It could organize my daily activities that I'm familiar with. For a large and enterprise, it's not really suitable. Because I've had one incident that Notion just went down that day. And the entire PM works is lost

I feel like notion is much more complicated than it needs to be and less intuitive for people who want a simple system. I can see it being good for certain projects (like tasks) but right now I’m finding it hard to organize my thoughts and actually get things done rather than taking notes just to take notes…

There are way more than a hundred note apps out there for Android. Most are the same old thing. Many note apps for WIndows and Apple/iPad. There are not as many for Linux, however. Perhaps Notion is complicated because people want more than a simple note app. Notion and Obsidian are both very simple and complex. Use Notion to make simple notes or add complexity. Notion is the simple app you seem to want but you can do more with it as you learn more about it. You do not need to make a database, afterall.

If you want a simple straight forward software to do simple tasks then notion is not for you. One of the most used feature about notion is it’s automation that let the app update and organize with minimum input once you set it up. It’s made to be tailored and personalized to suits your needs exactly the way you want it, that’s why it requires you to dive in to learn the features so to help you, and it never ask a single cents from you nor it has ads in it.

@@Thekidisalright I think you are wrong. Notion is indeed simple and good for making simple notes. I used it this way for some time. It has advanced features but you do not need to use them. Notion is as simple as Microsoft Notepad or a scrap of paper and pen.

I've been using Notion for 6 months and I've tweaked my set up multiple times, and I still can't understand how I feel about it. On the one hand, I like being able to build anything and create complex databases related to each other. On the other hand, it's just not good for to-dos. I've tried using it for EVERYTHING (because it would be great if I could manage my big projects AND small to-dos in one app) and it's not as seamless as Todoist or TickTick or any task management app. I wish I could use it for everything, and I've tried, but it felt like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Though I will continue using Notion for long-term data storage. Also, I have ADHD and every time I was in my Notion hyper-fixation phase I would spend days playing with it and not doing any tasks. Since it's so complex, it can be very distracting.

Cool video. I agree with you to a certain extent. 100% of these tools are only as great as the user. I enjoy notion. The idea behind it shows there’s no ceiling on what it can be. I also appreciate that it’s constantly evolving. The automation and a.i features can help people achieve more under one roof than using 10 other apps
