This applies to alllll IT. There are a million youtube videos that have convinced folks if they get a cert, degree etc they can expect to make a certain range. But you aren't going to get the job competing against folks with experience with the systems, environments, triaging threats, vulnerability management etc, as well as if they have certs/degrees. Home labs will only get you so far. Get an actual entry level position while going for certs/degree. Being able to talk about the subject matter will get you in the door. Build your skillset and search for opportunities in the environment you work in to gain the experience for the next job.

A lot of cybersecurity jobs also have security clearances. Before I joined with my security clearance, it would be nice if people would inform others getting into it it's more than just the degree or certifications. Especially if a person wants to open the doors to gain experiences, there's a lot of jobs that require the security clearances. So it would look into credit score, citizenship etc.
@JonGoodCyber
@JonGoodCyber Ай бұрын
Plenty of cybersecurity jobs don't require clearances, but if you need one, you can't just go out and buy one yourself. The point is that this does not impact choosing the right things to do to make yourself a competitive candidate. If you are a competitive candidate, you can find companies to sponsor you, assuming you meet the qualifications for a clearance, but too often, I see people using the fact that they don't have a clearance as a reason why they didn't get a job...it is rarely the reason if you got an interview. The only way to basically guarantee a clearance is to join the Military.

I think it's very important to understand that cyber security jobs are not going away and there's nothing that can get rid of them, especially now. New technologies and forms of automation come faster than ever before and there is more and more investment in cyber security programs because of desperate need for at least risk assessment.

I'm in the opposite boat. Have a bachelor's but don't have a cert yet. Getting nothing. I wish certs were a bit cheaper. It took long enough to deal with the price of college, but lacking a higher job to pay stuff off makes it harder to keep going for the higher job's requirements. It's a hard hill to climb when money is the gatekeeper to earning more money.

I definitely recommend going back and watching that section to fully capture what I said. ALL career fields change over time, and just because a job exists today doesn't mean that job will exist in the future, say 5, 10, or 20 years from now. New trends can cause jobs to be eliminated or changed, and you need to develop new skills to stay relevant. Also, the primary purpose of using technology is literally to make things more efficient and automated...not continue on with manual processes whenever possible.

The issue was ppl persuing "cyber" in general. Most influencers got in when the bar was low. Companies no longer believe in training and want to hire a finished product. The few that make it in know somebody or got lucky in the top 1%. Work towards IT dive deep on specific technologies THEN pivot to cyber. I dont think influencers had bad intentions but 99% of it is misleading

There are absolutely differences in the career field today compared to when I personally entered the cybersecurity job market (over a decade ago), but they aren't exactly as you've described them. I help people all the time at all levels of experience (newbie to seasoned pro) advance/accelerate their careers, so it's entirely possible if you do the right things, which often is the issue with why people are having challenges breaking into the career field. I can't speak for what other "influencers" say nor can I stop much of the misleading information that is being published to the world, but I'll always give information that works based on data.

I understand the concept of the video and your intentions, but where I think there was a missed opportunity is in explaining or enlightening your subscribers or viewers about an actual path. Currently, there are multiple videos with the same format, but what we're suggesting is you need to differentiate yourself and provide us with a unique insight or something valuable. The reality is, there is a group of people eager to break into IT Security. They were advised to start with Security+, then move on to labs, scripting, active directory, free internships, applying for numerous jobs (in the 100s), tailoring resumes for each application, mock interviews, networking events, more certification tailored to the job posting and more. Some individuals have completed all these steps and yet still struggle to receive a "YES" after numerous attempts. What do they get rewarded from people in the industry? We often hear "Do... more." It's just toxic, and they are tired. All in all, we understand the video and also understand that after a video discussing the same thing that was talked about 2 years ago by some of the people you have already interviewed (in their respective KZbin channels), your comments under this video are not full of praises. Just be different; that's all we are asking.

Were all starting to read the room I'm glad I was aiming for network engineering and cyber. The whole thing sold to people in the beginning was know your stuff prove yourself and you can get in without insane degrees etc...we've now completely lost the plot there is not a single tech job with the amount of hoops cyber wants..and it's absolutely not about talent influencers rarely sound technical or that advanced it's pure gatekeeping and confusion..once you get the first job things will open up it's hard not to be bitter tho the path wasn't what they sold to us
@christiandubois937
@christiandubois937 Ай бұрын
@@JohnCutter317 To be fair, the landscape has changed drastically, and you start to feel chaos among influencers who think they know how to land a job in cyber. Considering how vast and transformative the cyber field is, they have zero idea where or what it will be, they speculate. For me, only two positions have remained constant: Networking Engineer and Cloud Engineer, which could open doors into cyber with the proper certification and skills ( Firewalls usually). Now, in terms of the AI stuff, I call it BS because, as a security engineer, no company wants their security people using AI, especially when you have to give it proprietary data. However, I am not saying AI is not the future, but in Security right now, there's more risk than an actual need.

I don't think he means it doesn't help. It's definitely a good thing to have a degree and certs, especially if you have a specific field you want to get into. The biggest thing is that you have to actually prove you know what you're doing at the minimum level of the potential position. It is definitely possible to not have those qualifications, however, it's definitely harder to get the foot in the door without them.
