So true! They had a saying in Oklahoma when I lived there. They said, "If you don't like the weather here, stick around. It'll change." They are so right! It will be hot as heck one day and then snow on the ground the next. So weird! I honestly was always sick when I first moved out there. My body just couldn't adjust to the extreme weather changes.

As an Okie, for my entire life (34 years) I can speak to this video. Everything is accurate. However being a veteran in Oklahoma has far more perks than you listed and is usually left off the best states for disabled veterans. Oklahoma has a sales tax exemption for disabled vets. You don’t need to go on base to purchase things tax free. Disabled vets can walk into Walmart and target without paying sales taxes. Tornados become normal after a few years, get in touch with a local and we will be happy to go chase them with you and buy you a beer afterwards. 👍🏼

I moved to Oklahoma in 1997 due to the military. I couldn’t believe I was going to live there. I thought what the heck is in Oklahoma. I LOVED living there!!!! It was a great place to raise my children. The people are friendly. I left recently to care for my mother in Oregon. The only thing I don’t miss is the heat. I’ve been through my share of scary storms but that’s what storm shelters are for and you deal with them as they come. I don’t know if I will move back someday but would look forward to it if it is my fate. God and the native people have blessed Oklahoma.

I did an 18 month stint in Oklahoma City in the late 90's with my job. This was before the major revitalization of the down town area and professional sports teams. Most people at my home office were unwilling to move there and I had a negative view of the city despite the fact I'd never spent any time there. I was pleasantly surprised how nice of a place it was and really enjoyed my time there. The work ethic was strong and the service industry was well above average. When I went to restaurants people were kind and outgoing and genuinely glad you were there. When I got my car worked on it was done right and no one was trying to overcharge and underperform. People in general were very friendly and hard working. The house I bought was really nice and well made. It's flat and lakes and rivers are not the most beautiful. It's a bit windy and dusty. It was a good place to live and I really missed it when my next move was to Kansas City which was one of the worst places I had to live because it was full of crime, meth and lazy unfriendly people.

Beware of any state that gives corporations large tax cuts to set up business there. Somehow that state will have to make up the deficit and if the rich aren't paying their fair share, the poor and middle class will pay more. Simple math, there's no other posibilty. Lots of similar success stories as your friends brother. I'm one of them and I can tell you it's mainly because California's progressive taxes. If you're in the middle class, you will pay the second lowest percentage of your income in overall taxes, only behind one other state. Alaska.

The summers are hot and humid due to the gulf currents and the Rocky Mountains but guess what? Every place in the south is hot and humid during the summer. Kansas, Nebraska and the Dakotas are hot and humid as well and dome fine folks live in those states. Weather, the winters can occasionally be tough and long but those are rare as is lots of snow. Typically, winter is from about Thanksgiving day to mid March with the rest of the time being shorts weather. Yes, we have tornadoes, mostly in the spring time (mid-March to early June) but on the rare occasion in November. The terrain; looking at a road atlas or map I=35 is the dividing line with the west part being more flat (but not flat) and less trees (but still having trees). The eastern part of the state is more hilly and is covered with trees, quite a bit like north Texas but without the mesquite trees. The trees begin to become more dense east of Shawnee but there are still many natural clearings. It's easy to live here and it is nice and pretty pristine. We have airports in Tulsa & Oklahoma City which are pretty well serviced by most major airlines and they are easy to get in and out of. The state is in the middle of the nation so air travel to either coast is fairly simple.

I moved to Oklahoma in 2020. Briggs, you are spot on when it comes to why people move here. I would like to add something about taxes. While overall Oklahoma is very tax friendly, sales taxes are something to watch. Like other states such as Texas and Kansas, there are city and county sales taxes that are added to the state sales tax. Here in Washington County the total sales tax is 8.9% when the local taxes are factored. Oklahoma is also one of the few states that still have a sales tax on groceries. Hopefully in the 2024 state legislature session that will change.

(The two Cities are nothing alike but both are growing) Tulsa Reminds me of what Austin USED to be like. OKC reminded me of a mix of Fort Worth and Amarillo; flat, lacks trees, has a River but it’s more of a Creek. Tulsa is covered in Trees, rolling Hills and the Arkansas River. Also has lots of hiking, jogging and bike trails. And the most amazing park in the World. Google “The Gathering Place”. OKC is a Sports town, while Tulsa is a Music City. I was amazed at the music history and Live Music scene when I got here. I’d say most people I meet that are moving to Tulsa are from Austin, Denver, Boulder, DFW, Los Angeles(Orange County/Anaheim in Particular) and New Orleans.

I moved to Oklahoma from Colorado in 2017. My sister is here. I was hoping for a lower cost of living. I could buy my house with no mortgage from the sale of my house in Colorado. So, the cost of housing is a lot lower; however, some things have cost me the same or more. Utilities have been higher here. Homeowners and auto insurance have been higher. Food (even pre-inflation) is about the same. Gasoline is lower, though. Property taxes are higher when I factor in the value of my home in Colorado vs. Oklahoma. I live in a small town between Tulsa and I40, so it is easy to travel and also to easily get what I need from Tulsa if it is not available locally. Overall, I do not regret the move.

Reasons #5 #2 and #1 are the best reasons why people are moving to Oklahoma. Yes people are very friendly and they got alot of decent homes for under $300k especially newer ones. You forgot to mention they have one of the cheapest gas prices in the US. OU and OK State are decent universities with good football teams that draws a large out of state enrollment (mostly from Texas). Also it a deep red state and very conservative. The problems Oklahoma is not ok in is low paying jobs, bad school systems that are being underfunding and high home insurance rates because of tornados are more common.

Oklahoma has a tree line that starts around Ringling OK in southwestern part of the state, then moves northeast towards Tulsa. It's the blackjack oak tree line that buffers the other hard wood forest that then turns into Pine Forest. Just like when you're heading into the Sierras of California. You first get into the California oaks then other hardwoods then pine forest. In Oklahoma it's played out on a grander scale. I hope this gives people out west that's never been to Oklahoma a better perspective of the Topography of the state.

The May 3rd, 1999 tornados came within a few miles of my house and it was a bit concerning. However , my parents and in-laws are all in their 70s and have lived in Oklahoma their entire lives and none of them have ever been hit by a tornado. I can count on one hand the number of friends and family that I have who have been hit by tornados and only one, a friend in Moore, OK, had their entire house destroyed. I’m not saying they don’t happen and aren’t scary at times but folks in Oklahoma tend to wear the “Tornado” thing as a badge of honor when in reality the likelihood of being hit is pretty low. And because of all the warnings, the likelihood of dying in a tornado is even lower.

We moved from east Texas to OKC last year and we love it. We live on the edge of Edmond, rolling hills, trees and rural-seeming peace...but we are 1.5 miles from I-35 with easy access to OKC/Edmond. Traffic here does exist as certain times of day but it is far less than you would experience in DFW and the road system is very efficient at getting you from place to place. DFW has 5 of whatever you want, OKC has 1-2 but usually they are good options in terms of restauarants. There's a lot of cultural stuff here, plus NBA basketball, and we can be in the center of OKC and home in 25 minutes. Transportation to other places is good by road (intersection of I-40 and I-35) and pretty good by air, the OKC airport is big enough although you'll probably be catching a connection to Denver or DFW. Taxes, as mentioned, are not too bad. Property taxes are lower than in Texas, but we do have a state income tax that maxes out at 5%. OK doesn't spend as much on K-12 schools, salaries for teachers are 20-25% higher in Texas. The education system seems to be very strong at the university level, but we don't have kids in K-12 schools so I can't speak to strengths or weaknesses there from personal experience. Climate is better than East Texas. Drier, although we get plenty of rain, less humid and four real seasons. Tornadoes are a thing, but they don't tend to affect a large area and most houses come with shelters, or they can be had. Government services like licenses have been easy to navigate. All in all we are happy with our move. OKC is a great town and while I have yet to visit Tulsa I have heard even better things about that city. I'd give it a look if you are interested in moving, and if DFW is too pricey. Much of the benefit of DFW at much lower cost.

Been living in and around Tulsa since leaving Southern California in 2020; the Rural/suburban/city balance is phenomenal. I live on an acreage with a horse pasture and natural creek running through the property and am only 20 minutes away from downtown! The way that I live now is virtually unimaginable without obscene wealth, in CA.

I live in the DFW Area of Texas and have friends that know a lot of people that got priced out of living here and OKC and Tulsa is where they went or are going.

Exactly. I have to wait for one more kid to graduate (class of 2025!), then I am out the door. I love DFW and have lived here for 13 years, but I can’t afford it without working 2 jobs.

And they are now pricing out the locals here. Nobody wants economic migrants.

@@colbycodner5571 Blame it on the POS CA Evacuee Locusts that started it by moving to all the major cities in TX and driving up the costs of everything. They decimate everywhere they go. It's what a locust swarm does.

I was born and raised in Austin. I visited Oklahoma City and Tulsa before moving. Tulsa was a much better fit. I’d say most people I meet that are moving to Tulsa are from Austin, Denver, Boulder, Los Angeles(Orange County/Anaheim in Particular) and New Orleans.

Live back and forth between Texas (Houston, Midland and Austin) and Oklahoma my whole life. Oklahoma now is what Texas used to feel like before the influx. Just left Austin to move back to Tulsa.

If you're moving to Oklahoma it's most likely for cheap land and because you don't really care about the lackluster state of public education. You're probably also highly focused on college sports since the level of other forms of entertainment is largely not something you can't find in any decent city but college sports is ample. By and large the most often quoted reason is "cost of living" though due to cheap land/housing. That reason ignores low pay though that dominates the state by and large. I'm not sure where the "tax" info is coming from in the video but just my sales tax in Oklahoma is 9.0%. That doesn't include property and income taxes.

I’m a homeowner in Oklahoma and the property mill rate for Canadian country is a little over 11 mills or 11% for every $100,000 assessed value of your home. That’s not cheap. I lived in Alaska and the mill value in the Anchorage burrough is the same! But it could be higher now. But I love Oklahoma! Not the taxes.
