“Optimism is a strategy for making a better future. Because unless you believe that the future can be better, you are unlikely to step up and take responsibility for making it so.” Noam Chomsky
@davidsirmons5 жыл бұрын
@Underwater Laser I understand this observation's intent. Still, one has to qualify what is meant by "better". Remember that Hitler was doing what he himself thought was "better" for Germany, which had a 95 percent participation rate in their Nazi Party. The same with Lenin, who starved 6 million Ukrainians to death. Same with Stalin, who murdered over 60 million of his fellow countrymen. Same with Mao, the evil leader of China, who slaughtered over 100 million of HIS own countrymen, all under the banner of marxism/socialism/communism. So one has to instead observe what is the nature of what someone wishes to bring into existence, and its effects, rather than simply allowing the idea of "working toward what's better". The very worst nightmares of the 20th century, amassing over 185 million corpses, were all begun under the nebulous idea of "making the world better".

At one point, society believed that major cities would be buried in horse manure. The primary form of transportation was still horses and cities like London were getting HUGE. So there were literally mountains of horse-sh*t everywhere. Nobody could think of a way out of the literal mess. Then somebody invented the automobile and BAM! The whole paradigm shifted. The solutions to our problems, might be the kind of breakthrough that we can't even comprehend yet. I think we'll be fine.

Awe Joe. Got me to mist a bit a the end. I only recently started supporting you because I honestly did not respect KZbin to have information on the type of subjects I was earnestly seeking helpful explanations of. l only found your channel at the beginning of the year. It was your double slit experiment video that hooked me. I had an understanding of what the answer might already be and your explanation cut through a lot of painful overthinking and helped me to confirm some truths that I was looking for. Thank you sir. My favorite video after that is your perfect old fashion video. And that is why humans are AMAZING. Thanks for the hard work and don't forget the chair spinning thing. The audience needs that stuff to connect or disconnect from the hard subjects your continue to cover.

I agree, social media is poison. That said, to expand on @Rod Schmidt and @Cornelius Corcoran : find a news outlet from a foreign nation whose perspective you respect. Read how they comment on your nation's current events. It filters well for intra-cultural biases.

Escapism? Not good, especially for a Science Guy. What happens in the country and in the world affects science, and ultimately your life. You must know from where the blows are coming, and if you value anything besides of yourself (children, ecology, culture, justice), you need to know what's happening so you can put your effort into it. At least, to vote for the greater good. Or the lesser evil.

When I was in high school my dad started asking me how my astronomy classes were going. I was confused by the question, but my grades were not that great, so in order to avoid the topic, I would just say that they were fine. Then one day, after he asked me how my astronomy classes were going for the 6th or 7th time, I decided to ask him what he was talking about. He said, "Well, your teachers keep calling me to say that you are taking up space in school." ;-) hehehe
