A lot of the bar joked about it and talked shit about it, but before the first part of the pilot was over, we'd turned off the jukebox and put the sound on. The people that had shit on it without really watching it much or at all were suddenly invested and asking me all sorts of questions. When I finally went home I think they were on episode 6.

Leitmotif is the word drew is looking for when talking about the melodies being reused in different context and different accompaniment to create different feelings. That recurring melody is the leitmotif and I personally absolutely love when they are used well. I think they're fairly common but I only really care about the music of things I already like so I wouldn't be surprised if it's actually uncommon but I just consume a lot of things with leitmotifs

This has inspired me to do a long overdue rewatch. I freaking love Lost. I never understood the hate for the ending. I interpreted it as them being in limbo until they were all ready to finally move on together. It was an alternate reality, outside of time. I thought it was beautiful, and I bawled like a baby.

Fun fact: the writers actually had no idea which characters were going to get screen time and many actors were left not knowing wether they would have prominent roles. The set was such a mess that the writers got Steve and Scott’s characters confused accidentally killing off the wrong one- hence why it was a running joke in the series I know this cause the actor who played Steve was my ex boyfriend’s dad and he talked extensively about this

I can't bring myself to finish lost, my dad introduced me to it last year during summer break, it was our little secret since my mom didn't want me to watch it. We would watch like 4 episodes a week during summer break and like 4 episodes a month during the school year. After my mom went to bed, my dad would come up to my bedroom and tell me to get the popcorn started with a grin on his face. It was always fun hanging out with him. But my dad passed away in December due to covid, it was crushing loss and very unexpected. I've tried to watch Lost since but I can't bring myself to do it because it reminds me of him. I think that Charlie from LOST may genuinely be one of my favorite characters of all time. The first time I watched the show with my dad, I said to him “I like the way that he’s just so calm while everyone else is freaking out about the giant plane crash.” (little did I know he was on coke). As an ancient and decrepit former Lost stan, it's interesting when you say the show needs to be binged to be appreciated. I actually think the drawn-out network schedule was part of the charm of being a fan back then, because it encouraged diehards to fill the gaps with tons of theories and speculation.

Agree. Maybe in 2021 this is a more reasonable take, but back in the days when the show was airing, there was definitely this feeling of the opposite. I think the interesting thing about LOST is that it absolutely would've benefitted from being in a streaming age but at the same time the airing week-to-week and discourse absolutely helped build the interest and hype about the show. In a world where LOST dropped a season at a time onto Netflix it probably would've ultimately been better for the plot but simultaneously it would've been way more forgettable in the long run. Like, they did a whole-ass ARG (that I was super into) in between seasons 2 and 3 involving multiple websites, other companies working LOST stuff into their ads and websites, a podcast, and a bad paperback novel written for the express purpose of plugging the show. I can't imagine an original IP today doing that, even popular ones like Stranger Things. I _kind of_ think Disney's re-learning the power of generating hype for its shows by releasing them weekly... but then again the only things they've done that with so far are its Marvel and Star Wars shows and those are giant behemoths that will never die and not untested IPs at all.

I think HBO airing Game of Thrones weekly definitely helped its popularity; it kept people talking about it both in person and online for months at a time. Whereas when shows get released all at once on Netflix, they're talked about on social media for like a week and then fade into obscurity until the next season; they don't really have enduring cultural impact like something like Game of Thrones did.
@Choekaas3 жыл бұрын
The crazy thing about the ARG was how invested people were. I mean, to uncover the secrets in the later stage of the game you had to find glyphs all over the world. They could be in a shop window in Sydney, in Times Squarel, on a Korean website or in a park in London. And people jumped right into it. People talk about how big Game of Thrones was, and it's true - it was - but Lost fandom in 2005-2006 was insane.

This video single-handedly got me to watch Lost, a show I had never heard of before and probably would have otherwise thought was lame, and I am now the BIGGEST Lost fan; I know so much about this show and have analyzed Benjamin Linus as a character up and down (he's SO INTERESTING, and Michael Emmerson is a great actor), I'm now re-watching and getting so much joy out of it, so thank you, Drew. Also another funny song title from the soundtrack (spoilers): when Charlie gets hung by Ethan and Jack resuscitates him, the song behind it is called "Charlie Hangs Around".

Beautifully summarised, Drew. I'm from Pakistan and LOST was my introduction to American television. I was blow. Away by the intricacies of the plot, the way the writers thought so far in the future. Absolutely loved the entire thing. The ending definitely came out of nowhere but it was so bittersweet. The entire final season was tragic in a way that showed that these people would still be "lost" in their lives even if the plane had not crashed. Thank you for doing this.

Learning about other cultures through film and literature is very interesting but in most cases, the country in question is much more boring and unattractive looking than media would suggest. Signed, a mediocre looking American eating an apple on the sofa with zero dramatic music

Yep I'm Also from Pakistan and Lost was the First US TV Show that Watched and fortunately Binged it cuz I watched it after 2010. It was suggested by an Urdu Columnist "Yasir Pirzada" in one of his Columns in Jung News Paper. So I did what most people from developing countries did; I searched for the torrent of the torrent of the Show and Downloaded all of the Seasons and watched all of it and Loved it! My Apologies for torrenting this show to the creators cuz this was the time when 1. I was broke Student 2. Netflix was Only Available in US 3. Internet was Luxury in the remote town where I was Living 4. There was No option for me to Legally watch the This Show

I'm from India, and I've had a similar experience. Lost was an international phenomenon. It changed how people saw television - a series as good as a feature film. My family would gather around to watch it at 9 pm. I was 12 when I watched it, I bonded with my dad over it - it just has a very special place in my heart.

I know I am very late, but I’m so happy to see someone protecting LOST. I learned about this series from my mom and I immediately fell in love with it. I feel like LOST is so forgotten and trashed on, so it’s amazing to someone finally giving it the credit it deserves.

Hey drew, when a composer associates a tune to a person or situation in a movie it’s called a leitmotif! It’s a wonderful way to tell the story through the music.

Finally someone giving Michael Giacchino the credit he deserves. Everyone know Hans Zimmer or John Williams, both are incredible composers. But Michael Giacchino has done so much incredible work and almost nobody knows him. My favorite piece by him is ‚The Kronos Wartet‘ from Star Trek Into Darkness, just plain awesome. I watched that movie three times in the cinema because the the soundtrack is so amazing.

I actually got to see the music from LOST performed live at UCLA. Michael Giacchino did an official concert the week before the final episode aired. So it was meant to be a celebration of the entire series and a teaser for the finale. The shows creators and some of the actors went as well. Hearing all the music performed live with an orchestra gave me chills and is a memory ill never forget. It was also surreal to be apart of that moment, as Drew was right - at the time the show was a cultural phenomenon (very similar to Twin Peaks). Drew would have been in heaven, as the soundtrack was even more emotional live - and under the atmosphere of going into that final episode. While LOST was flawed due to the old network system (the writers were forced to make 25 + episodes a season which was ridiculous) - it’s still one of the best shows of all time.

None of the seasons were 25+ episodes. The longest season is the first and it's 25 episodes, even then it's paced pretty well and every episode feels important imo. Cool story though, the soundtrack is awesome and that concert must've been amazing

I literally took days to recover from the end of Lost. I watched it last year in full and after having some paradigm shifting psychedelic experiences this show hit soooo many DEEP levels.
