At the bar a while back the bartender and I had been talking about our mutual love of Lost when she decided to put the show on. A lot of the bar joked about it and talked shit about it, but before the first part of the pilot was over, we'd turned off the jukebox and put the sound on. The people that had shit on it without really watching it much or at all were suddenly invested and asking me all sorts of questions. When I finally went home I think they were on episode 6.

I may be 2 years late, but I wanna say that this video is what finally pushed me to watch this show. My mom was pregnant with me while it was airing, and she used to tell me about how my dad would watch it while she went to bed early cause I had her up all night as a baby. She would mention the show a lot, how it was innovative and worked with flashbacks and forward flashes, always making me interested in it, but I never actually tried to watch it until I watched this video. I’ve now successfully completed the show, and I can truly consider it one of my favorite shows of all time. Thank you, Danny, for opening me up to Lost again.

@Darius Bostic I don't care about Jesus. I do care about pushing your beliefs on others. Nice try to disassemble my logic, but like most religious people, you don't understand basic logical thought patterns. You're the one posting unwanted proselytizing on a fucking youtube video that has nothing to do with religion. You really don't understand how absurd that makes you seem? I don't hate Jesus. The world is not made up of Jesus lovers and Jesus haters, as much as your black and white religion would love you to believe. The problem is, it's just not real. There has never been a concrete reason to believe in any religion. I think some of his teachings were pretty rad and how humans *should* treat each other. Modern Christianity is a bastardization of those teachings. I can lead a moral life without an outdated handbook, thanks.

Well 99% of reviewers are STUPID lol. But seriously everything about Lost's score is perfect. The slow rhythmic sound of low string instruments that builds suspense. Then the almost swarming orchestra when our characters are fleeing from danger. The percussion using actual pieces of the plane wreckage. The use of oldies music throughout the series. The one in the Incredibles where Dash starts running from the guards is called "100 Mile Dash" and later on he would title a track in Ratatouille "100 Rat Dash". Another track in Ratatouille is called "Is it soup yet?" Which is an obscure line from the Goofy Movie. He also did the score for my favorite Disney ride, Space Mountain. Mad respect for this guy.

Leitmotif is the word drew is looking for when talking about the melodies being reused in different context and different accompaniment to create different feelings. That recurring melody is the leitmotif and I personally absolutely love when they are used well. I think they're fairly common but I only really care about the music of things I already like so I wouldn't be surprised if it's actually uncommon but I just consume a lot of things with leitmotifs
@chumuheha
@chumuheha 3 жыл бұрын
It is common, or at least it's common in films with good film scoring. Leitmotifs are like a third of the reason why characters and plots are compelling, because your brain subconsciously makes associations and recollections when it hears the same theme.

Fun fact: the writers actually had no idea which characters were going to get screen time and many actors were left not knowing wether they would have prominent roles. The set was such a mess that the writers got Steve and Scott’s characters confused accidentally killing off the wrong one- hence why it was a running joke in the series I know this cause the actor who played Steve was my ex boyfriend’s dad and he talked extensively about this

After my mom went to bed, my dad would come up to my bedroom and tell me to get the popcorn started with a grin on his face. It was always fun hanging out with him. But my dad passed away in December due to covid, it was crushing loss and very unexpected. I've tried to watch Lost since but I can't bring myself to do it because it reminds me of him. I think the interesting thing about LOST is that it absolutely would've benefitted from being in a streaming age but at the same time the airing week-to-week and discourse absolutely helped build the interest and hype about the show. In a world where LOST dropped a season at a time onto Netflix it probably would've ultimately been better for the plot but simultaneously it would've been way more forgettable in the long run. Like, they did a whole-ass ARG (that I was super into) in between seasons 2 and 3 involving multiple websites, other companies working LOST stuff into their ads and websites, a podcast, and a bad paperback novel written for the express purpose of plugging the show. I can't imagine an original IP today doing that, even popular ones like Stranger Things. I _kind of_ think Disney's re-learning the power of generating hype for its shows by releasing them weekly... but then again the only things they've done that with so far are its Marvel and Star Wars shows and those are giant behemoths that will never die and not untested IPs at all.

I think HBO airing Game of Thrones weekly definitely helped its popularity; it kept people talking about it both in person and online for months at a time. Whereas when shows get released all at once on Netflix, they're talked about on social media for like a week and then fade into obscurity until the next season; they don't really have enduring cultural impact like something like Game of Thrones did.
@Choekaas
@Choekaas 3 жыл бұрын
The crazy thing about the ARG was how invested people were. I mean, to uncover the secrets in the later stage of the game you had to find glyphs all over the world. They could be in a shop window in Sydney, in Times Squarel, on a Korean website or in a park in London. And people jumped right into it. People talk about how big Game of Thrones was, and it's true - it was - but Lost fandom in 2005-2006 was insane.

Beautifully summarised, Drew. I'm from Pakistan and LOST was my introduction to American television. I was blow. Away by the intricacies of the plot, the way the writers thought so far in the future. Absolutely loved the entire thing. The ending definitely came out of nowhere but it was so bittersweet. The entire final season was tragic in a way that showed that these people would still be "lost" in their lives even if the plane had not crashed. Thank you for doing this.

I actually got to see the music from LOST performed live at UCLA. Michael Giacchino did an official concert the week before the final episode aired. So it was meant to be a celebration of the entire series and a teaser for the finale. The shows creators and some of the actors went as well. Hearing all the music performed live with an orchestra gave me chills and is a memory ill never forget. It was also surreal to be apart of that moment, as Drew was right - at the time the show was a cultural phenomenon (very similar to Twin Peaks). Drew would have been in heaven, as the soundtrack was even more emotional live - and under the atmosphere of going into that final episode. While LOST was flawed due to the old network system (the writers were forced to make 25 + episodes a season which was ridiculous) - it’s still one of the best shows of all time.
