I worked for a super premium pet food company, trust me its all marketing. A few rules of the pet food industry anything listed after potassium chloride or salt is less than 1% of the food. Meaning if your food says blueberries after it list salt, yeah you may have one blueberry in the bag. Another misleading thing you see, is named protein, chicken may appear first on the ingredient list but thats misleading. That list is dry matter before mixing and cooking, chicken is high in water so once cooked it loses that weight, this is where splitting comes in to make up the protein levels on the label. This is where you will see the bulk of protein coming from plants. Remember meats lose weight after cooking, so they have to add in cheap plant proteins to make up the difference. Anything before salt/sodium/potassium chloride is the bulk of the feed, so if you have brown rice and oats barley any grain or lentil or potato that is the bulk of the food even if a named meat is at the top of the list...remember meat weight is calculated before cooking and mixing. Its a industry dirty secret. Honestly there are few dog foods out there, and many dog feeds.

That's exactly why I don't understand the whole hoo-hah about meat meals or dried meats in kibble. So long as they're specifically named, I see no issue with them. They're basically just a really concentrated form of meat. If a dog food says it contains 60% fresh lamb, you'll probably have just 18% left in the final product. But if it says 60% lamb meal or dried lamb, then that's near enough exactly what'll be there by the end of it. Meals and dried meats aren't the devil they're made out to be.

@@topcomment3816, not all premium pet food is a scam. They don't just omit thing like grains and potatoes for the fun of it. Those are some of the most common food allergies in dogs today. Dogs are even allergic to chicken, which is why you now see so many exotic proteins in pet foods. And there *is* a difference in the quality of the ingredients. You think alpo is using the same quality ingredients as orijen? And there is a difference in the quality of the facilities they're manufactured in too. Food produced in a plant that manufactures animal feed is not fit for human consumption because they have vastly different regulations on them. And that's why there are 16 dozen pet food recalls every month from bacterial contamination, fungal contamination, foreign objects, etc. You know what is a scam? The fact that brands like royal canin and hill science diet fund and run the dietary courses for veterinary school so the students learn specifically what they want them to learn so they will push *their* product on their patients. That's why you will see mostly one or the other as prescription diets in all the vets offices in town. You're deluding yourself if you think premium pet food is the only one running a scam.

I can't believe that vet specialist would say cheap cat food, which is mostly cereal, has the same benefits as premium cat food which is mostly a meat product. Because you know, cats are carnivores?

Cats are carnivores and should be fed as such. Meat. Pretty cheap for them. I don't have a cat but same standards go for my dog. Feed what they eat in the wild. You'll have a healthier, happier pet.
@gandalf34535 жыл бұрын
@undertakersarmpit no they are carnivores. It's all determined by their teeth structure. Both cats and dogs have teeth for ripping flesh apart and they both have a highly acidic stomach acid unlike we do, and they naturally carry bacteria found in raw meat of all kinds and can digest it. Both cats and dogs derive from and have the same genetics as the first species of cat and dog. Every single dog has a wolf's genetic code and eat the same thing. They are all basically wolves, just a different breed, but they all eat the same thing. Same with cats. We often compare ourselves to our pets, when in reality they are completely different in every way. Dogs and cats have the unique ability to adapt to their environment, hence why we domesticate them. Feed a snake kibble... it will die from starvation. Everybody is like,"no you feed snakes mice and rats amd rabbits" because they eat that in the wild. Then how come we don't feed our other animals what they eat in the wild? Because everybody is lazy and only cares for convenience these days. Rats and mice come frozen. Kibble comes bagged and doesn't need refrigeration. Snakes only eat every few weeks. But you can buy the meat in bulk and freeze what you use later and refrigerate what you will use in the next 3 days. It's sad for me to see pets being abused with unnatural foods because they've care takers are too damn lazy to feed them biologically appropriate raw foods. You know... the BARF diet. Look it up. Dr.Becker does a great job of explaining it here on youtube.
@ValliW5 жыл бұрын
Actually they are hyper carnivores, which means they require more meat than dogs do. Which is why you see warning labels on dog food "do not feed to cats". The lack of taurine in their diet will kill them. (Taurine is a naturally occurring chemical found in meat, it must be added to cat food. Dogs synthesize it themselves.)

I own 5 cats, I've had all 5 since I was a little girl and I'm turning 28 soon so all my cats are around 18+ yrs and I know for a FACT that more expensive food does equal better quality for their nutrition. Ages ago I used to feed them fancy feast bc it was the cheapest and readily available cat food plus I was young and my parents didn't know any better. As newer brands hit the market, like blue buffalo and wellness, they did offer higher protein content in their food. As soon as I switched my cats from FF to wellness and later to Blue Buffalo, theirs coats got shinier, they stayed fuller longer, their stools were always the consistent color and to this day NONE of them have had any dietary issues or allergies. In fact, my own vet attests their well being to the cat food I feed them. No one believes me that my cats are 18+ yrs bc they are so agile and lean. Now I will say this though, there are times that manufacturers do trick pet owners with over pricing certain special diet food for cats e.i. Purina cat food for urine tract health sells 2 versions of the EXACT SAME FOOD that does the exact same thing (prevent urinary crystals from forming) one for $23 (PURINA ONE) for a 16lb bag and the other (PURINA PRO PLAN) for $36 for a 16lb bag as well. Point is, companies are greedy just like any other. They see a market for ppl to pay higher prices. That's true and I agree with the video but to imply MOST dog/cat food premium quality is no different than cheap by product??? shame on you!

Dog food hasn't been a thing forever - it's just come up in the past few decades as a highly profitable industry. And coincidentally, dogs are getting unhealthier - and I don't just mean bad breeding practices. Even healthier or mixed breeds have lifestyle disorders and get a very 'chunky' kind of look. Eg., most dogs should have an arch when you have a side-view of the torso, but I've seen a lot of dogs with chubbier and chubbier tummies, despite getting exercise. Here's the thing - I haven't seen that happen to dogs who've been fed on natural food. I also haven't seen them go through painful surgeries for xyz reasons. I'm aware each breed has a tendency to get a certain kind of issue (e.g. American-line Golden retrievers might have a higher chance of getting cancer) but obesity is certainly avoidable. Secondly- pet food regulations are very shady in most countries. 'Meat' could be listed as an ingredient, but most brands can choose not to specify what meat they're using (as in it could be random roadkill, and it doesn't have to be listed as such). Then we all know about preservatives and the fact that they use corn to really bulk up the food (because corn is cheap and easily accessible). When I first got my dog, I found a list of ingredients to avoid in dog foods - and most major companies had an uncomfortable number of them. It's like having relatively healthy breakfast cereal - it's fine, but not for every meal, every day. Thirdly, look at the ingredients for the best dog foods or treats out there. Their selling points will be meat, maybe some fruits and grains, but mainly meat. It's just easier to skip the packaging and preservatives, and feed them regular food instead. Cost-effective, too. Fancy dog food brands are ridiculously expensive in the long run Lastly - dog food started as dog biscuits only during the twentieth century. They'd been living on natural food just fine before. Obviously, make adjustments according to how your dog reacts (our dog doesn't digest milk properly for instance, so we use other sources for calcium instead) but it might help a lot to introduce fresh food into the dog's life. Super long comment, sorry about that.

Our dog was diagnosed with gastro-intestinal problems & placed on a "prescription" diet. That was almost 4 years ago & so far, he has had no more health problems. Although it has no drugs or medications in the food, it costs more per month to feed the dog than it does to feed 2 adults. To make matters worse, these dog food distribution companies not only own the company that makes the prescription food, they also own some of the most popular pet chain stores! I feel the industry is ripping the public off & we are powerless to fight them with their high prices. Yes, I get free shipping on my canned food, but the case price (24) has gone from $60.00 to over $80.00 & he eats almost 3 cans a day! So, depending on the daily price comparison changes these companies are using for their business model, I never know unless I check, how much my account will be drained every month. It keeps me on the internet as well as up at night worrying if I can keep feeding an aging dog without having to go to a food bank to feed myself! I don't know if it's worth it because how can I believe a vet now that I know they are all linked to these pet food companies AND the autoship distribution centers! I smell a con game & I guess that's just the way the world is these days. No one seems to really care about the pet owners living on fixed incomes these days. I suspect they just think we have endless lines of credit to keep paying their ever-changing prices on "prescription" pet foods! We don't. Color me worried.

You can literally buy raw food for less than that price. Start chicken wings. Yes the bone and skin too. They need it for phosphate and calcium balance. It's what they eat in the wild, feed them that. This proves that i wasn't lying when i said you CAN afford raw feeding. Give a little veggies and fruit, organs here and there, maybe some coconut oil or fish oil, feed twice a day and you're good. Easier and less expensive with small dogs for they need less, but still, price per pound, especially when buying in bulk, raw is the same or even cheaper. Find the local butcher and just ask. If you don't have one, your grocery store is reasonably priced sorta. Also change out the type of bone every now and again. If you don't feed them the bone they will get watery diarrhea. Speaking from experience my american eskimo and his fluff had to be cleaned every time he finished pooping because it would stick to his fur! Yuck!

The only difference I heard about is premium brands using more protein and less fillers. They also used a wider variety of protein sources for the premium brands. ALL of the protein was the same. There was no 'special' protein. In fact, it all has red food dye on the product sprayed across the top which the USDA has the company spray on product that isn't fit for human consumption. ALL protein gets this spray that gets shipped out for animal food. I'd also like to know why any pet owner would pay upwards of $2.50\lb for pet food when you can get meat for that price. Doesn't make sense to me.
@azureseraph12642 жыл бұрын
Buying expensive despite being able to buy meat for the same price comes with a variety of reasons. First is convenience, not everyone has time to prepare a balanced meal, and dogs cannot get a balanced diet on just “meat”, they need bone, organ, supplements (such as kelp, fish oils), and some seafood for certain nutrients, which will be more money than some expensive pet foods. Furthermore is calories, one pound of dog food and one pound of meat provide different calories, half a pound of pet food may provide enough calories to a dog, however half a pound of meat cannot, and the dog may require 2x as much meat to meet daily needs. Example:4 cups kibble in a lb, most kibbles provide 400 (but some range higher)cal per cup, so 1600 cal a lb, which an affordable meat like chicken is only 784-1000 or so calories per lb. The only exception would be if your buying fatter cuts or more expensive meats like beef, but at that point your spending almost twice the amount..

If you're comparing 'average' pet food today against premium pet food, there isn't much of a difference, but it's a response to how pet food was 10 years ago. The 'norm' and what stocked the market shelves were kibbles that had the nutritional equivalent of cardboard. Prices of pet foods aren't too high, it's that pet foods were all about reaching the lowest price points possible in order to appease owners or previous generations that didn't give a shit about their animals' wellbeing. Because if they can't complain about what they eat, they must be fine and happy right?

Some cheaper foods may have more basis in science but what do you think the larger corporations are selecting for? Most likely the cheapest food that won't result in a dead pet... Unfortunately, their incentives are not aligned with those with pets.

So you are saying Orijen and Pedigree are the same? So it makes no difference that a bag of Pedigree is 53% sugar and Orijen is less than 20%?

Millennials are at the age where they're starting to settle down and have a stable income. These people will one day become the old men and women behind the iron curtains and corporations must instill in them now the products and services they'll continue to use for generations to come.

I am sure lucky charms can be shown to be scientifically healthier than steak and potatoes because of the added vitamins. Sometimes its not about the science. Its not wanting to feed your pup some ugly ass dry dog food.

Marketing is absolutely horrible in pet food market, but please don't blame expensive dog foods when a lot of them are higher quality and use way better ingredients in appropriate measures. I'd rather spend a lot on dog food than vet bills, so I'd call myself an advocate for health, not budget.

I just happen to work in the pet food industry. Raw food such as freeze dried raw and frozen raw are way better than kibbles which are basically made with waste meat powders. Its like you can surely survive on potato chips for a year, but your health condition and life span will be quite different than having balanced daily meals instead. If you have a pet for love but not just for letting it survive for fun, please feed responsibly.

I'm calling bs. Dog and cats foods that are high dollar are better. 1 star (cheaper) don't even have protein as the first ingredient. U do get what u pay for at farm and home and pet food companies. People love their pets, they're not gonna allow some corn based product with questionable ingredients fetch a high price. I'll feed dog chow in a pinch don't get me wrong. But ima put some meat with it. But as soon as my finances are right I'm looking for gently cooked all natural dog food. If im struggling financially cheap pet food is okay. If I got any discretionary spending... high dollar pet food is the first place its going.

While a lot of what they are saying might be true. My dog gets itchy bumps on his skin as well as digestive issues whenever he eats cheap food. Always look at reviews and ingredients, it's not as simple as that. Food might not be good because it's expensive but cheap food is cheap for a reason.

Say.. $2 a lb but at 30% or lower proteins (be it quality or low quality, beaks or chicken, euthanized animals or steak... or non human grade meats... etc).. and rest fat and fillers... Is not as good as a $6 a lb beef you get from the grocery that you can share with your fur child that is 80% - 90% meat and the rest fat. Why $6 a lb??? Use your brains and think... 30% dog food protein.. to make that 90% meat you needs to times the $2 by 3. Yes... Your commercial dog foods companies just scammed you into thinking its value and convenience while the rest of the raw fed peeps are doing what’s right for their fur kids.. no scams.

I see where he’s coming from... the main brands that are sold as premium actually have very average ingredients. BUT you can find smaller more local companies which sell premium food but with premium ingredients. Learn about what good ingredients are in dog food so you can understand what I mean.

I'm sorry if you love your animals like family you are going to give them the best, I work at a shelter and there is a massive difference between when we feed cheap donated food vs the more premium food, the cheaper food always gives diarrhea!!!! Also what does it matter millienials want to give their dogs and cats the best, just compare ingredients! Do you want to feed them by product (which can include road kill and euthanized animals) or mainly meat? It's honestly common sense! All meat ingredients vs by product/corn will be more expensive! And there is evidence, just look at all the recalls on cheap food

I would have to disagree hardy on this. How could that so called “ veterinarian nutritionist” sit here and say that higher premium dog food isn’t any better than non premium. So origin isn’t any better than pedigree? lol I’m sorry how many recalls have all the low grade dog foods had? Yeah to many to count. She also didn’t want to share information about some of the controversial ingredients that go into low grade dog food, such as cancer causing agents. She is just like most vets that push For money for people to buy the shitty science diet and Purina pro plan.
