I'm glad you posted this. There are those in the F-35 camp wondering why it even has a gun. They say the same old worn argument of everything will be BVR anyway and how great stealth is so it will never get in a furball anyway. I called BS about the air battle staying BVR and they really got upset when I reminded them that the Mark 1 eyeball doesn't give a crap about stealth. I also reminded them that at a max Mach 1.2 every other fighter on the planet can overtake it like a Mustang outpreforming an old Pinto. Also, the F-35 can only use an AB for about 50 seconds while the Raptor doesn't even have to use its ABs to go about the same speed.
@recoil53
@recoil53 Жыл бұрын
I agree with all of that. Once everybody gets close it's visual. My biggest complaint is while the F-35 is stealthy, it pretty much has to be and it has to hope that it kills everything before they get close.

Of the 151 fighters the North Vietnamese admitted to have lost throughout the conflict in air to air combat, only 6 were shot down with cannons. Countering MIGs was never about having a cannon. It was about using missiles effectively. Last confirmed kill with a cannon was recorded during the 1991 Gulf War and it was achieved by an F/A 18 over a vastly outmaneuvered MI-24 helicopter. The short answer to the question un the video is: Because the F-22's requirements date back to the 1980s, when the "Muh cannon saved the day in Vietnam" myth was still firmly set in the minds of former Vietnam pilots who were in the Joint Chiefs at the time and the ignorance of the people in the Armed Services Committee. The reason why the F-35 even has a gun pod is because that way Lockheed could convince hardcore Warthog supporters the F-35 could perform CAS in contested/denied airspaces. Fun fact: the VPAF flew two types of MIG-21s in Vietnam. One of them carries its 23mm cannon in a gun pod. Whenever there was the chance to carry AA-2's missiles, the MIGs never carried gun pods. Fun Fact 2: Visual range and cannon range are two completely different things. Fun fact 3: Only a few infantrymen carry pistols and they rarely use them.

Every time I see an article about this great plane / Jet I get pissed off that Obama canceled the production of this . I truly believe that if continued to be built to the original 500+ jets that the. OST would of come down and even now to start up the production again with the new technology it would even be better . We need more jets and even though the FX 15 is great building this would even be better!

You clearly have no idea about the costs of restarting the production line for the F-22. There has been several studies done and it was concluded that it would cost more to restart and produce more 22's than is worth it especially with the NGAD (Next Generation Air Dominance) program for our 6th generation fighter being undertaken at this time.

We have no need for 500 raptors and it was necessary to cut the program back then we had to cut back on a lot at the time. The f22 actually lacks a lot of modern tech and it’s not fully multirole.

Maybe another reason is -- if you just want to take something out without needing to waste a much more expensive thing like a missile, and without wasting a missile, then using a gun might help. This is aside from being a sitting duck for situations when the other person has guns and we don't have onboard guns, for the close range situation.

The deadly lesson learned from the Vietnam war especially the air war over Hanoi when the US arrogantly declared “the day of dogfight is over” with their fancy air to air missiles toy. But the reality served them cold as countless times their missiles failed to find its targets, and American planes were shot down in huge numbers by some old Mig with their 30mm cannon. It has gotten so bad to the point that American pilots have to begged for the machine guns to be putting back on their planes for missions over Hanoi !!!

There is another reason modern fighters should still have a gun... lesser valued targets. If you only have four internal missiles, do you really want to try to use them against a helicopter, drone, scout plane, bomber, turbo-prop ground attack aircraft, etc.? What about against a small patrol boat? Seems better just do gun these targets and save your missiles for high value fighter aircraft.

The gatling gan is archaic. Its better to fire the missiles and get to safety that attempting to get within short range rockets and stuff. It is a ridiculous notion to think that you can risk an aircraft of that price and what's more expensive - the pilot - to get within gatling gun range of anything. A manpad can shoot down an F35 if its within gatling gun range. It's the most metal and epic dinosaur of the airforce. I'd never want to replace it. But I'd NEVER want to use it. Missile launcher systems and drones will make dogfight fighters completely obsolete. F35 and pilot costs more than a thousand rockets and drones. We are not back in the vietnam war anymore. It's ancient times.

I also say restart building F-22 Raptor until there is a plane that’s better at dog fight and cost of the plane shouldn’t matter, only the best for our fighting force, just look at the police force today with all that combat protective gear and only enemy they fighting is the citizens. If the police rate combat gear our military does as well. The police get taught the constitution helps as well.
