Your work on Fallout as a game series, but most importantly, as a narrative, is amazing. It takes a strong stance to remind people that Fallout shines the most when it remembers that it is a game, a post nuclear roleplaying game. The story that we write about our vault dweller, the chosen one or the courier is one that no other medium can offer. Fallout started by asking an important question: *What decisions would you make after the end of the world?* a couple of Fallout games tell stories that lack the right focus or forget that this is about the player, they deliever stories about fully written relationships. But three games from in the middle desert remember that that question must be answered by you, the player, the answers you give write a story that only games can tell. It is, truly, special.

Doesn't Fallout 2 hint at the fact that Myron didn't create jet? With Bishop's wife being addicted to it way before Myron came around or how the player with high science skill can confront Myron by saying that it's very unlikely for him to be the founder of jet if it's so easy to create. Plus there's pre war jet in New Vegas.
@UsmevavyPanacek
@UsmevavyPanacek 8 күн бұрын
@@Pluto_Holidays Let's not forget, that basis for Jet is a military super-protein infected by most likely mutated bacteria and ingested by mutated cows. And while it is possible, that someone else could have found out, the chance that that someone just didn't stopped using it, because it is dangerous to workers, but started deliberately dosing them with it in concentrated form, killing dozens of them, to use it as a drug, that chance seems a bit smaller. So I'd say that the Jet being pre-war seems extremely unlikely and is most likely writing error and while someone else could have came up with it before Myron, taking into consideration what has to come together, all the coincidences and resources to back it up, it doesn't seem THAT easy.
@bringoni
@bringoni 8 күн бұрын
@@Pluto_Holidays the problem with the bishop's is a mistake that Chris Avalone said to write off as them just being wrong about how long they've been addicted, the ending of the game explicitly states that jet was myron's invention and nowhere does it clearly indicate otherwise

Whenever I got someone used to modern RPGs to play this, it didn't take long until they were completely enamored by the dialogue, immersion and how believable the world was in every aspect. It's *dark* and it remains so until the end. "Fallout" of today has all the cool symbols, catchphrases and little trinkets meant to say "*hey gamers remember this?? we do!!*" when the games containing these neat little references are hardly any more than Borderlands looter shooters with a side of Redditor Adult Swim Rick & Morty humor. It's gotten so bad that people associate Fallout with being an adult flavor of silly (gore except it's goofy) "War Never Changes" means something specific and it remains the one philosophy Fallout follows and should follow. What it means is that it doesn't matter who launched the nukes first (developers say it was China. This makes sense as they had the least to lose. Still, it doesn't matter as no matter who comes on top, a part of being human is war. The only way to end war is to relinquish our humanity, the way I see it) I've seen people use Fallout 2 as an excuse for newer Fallout entries (3, 4, 76, TV) to be silly (Fallout 3 sometimes) and outright *stupid* (TV show). 4 and 76 being somewhere in between those two. Fallout 2's weakest parts like the talking deathclaws and the lightly sprinkled pop culture references don't come even halfway to what Bethesda did with theirs and I'm willing to explain this in detail for anyone who don't understand this. Fallout 3 has a lot of merit, though a lot of things remain absurd (like Megaton and Little Lamplight). I strongly feel that Bethesda is capable of making a worthy successor but appealing to your average consumer means having to make things digestible and safe (while still pretending to be edgy. Safe edgy, as it were) If strongly caring about this Fallout world, to the point of closely inspecting the Van Buren tech demo, scouring through days worth of design documents and arguing on forums consisting of highly dedicated fans makes me an autistic virgin dead set on seeing Fallout be treated right (like how New Vegas is a modern example of treating the old games right), then so be it. Thanks for your input in this video and it makes me hopeful seeing the younger generation approach these games... and thanks for letting this old cranky man ramble >_>

People dont like the intelligent deathclaws? I think they fit really well in and make sense, the enclave trying to create super soldiers is obvious, and them accidentally beeing created smart enough to trick their captors makes sense. Its also not like theyre all as smart either, which is interresting. Why dont people like them?
@vaultdweller94
@vaultdweller94 7 күн бұрын
I think for a lot of people it took them out of the atmosphere to suddenly have to talk with giant lizards. It makes sense that Enclave would want to create bioweapons such as these but from a more out of universe standpoint it clashed. The Burrows were cut from Fallout 1 for this reason. I know the developers have outright stated regret over the talking deathclaws. I don't think the concept unsalvageable, having them not talk but rather as unstable (and highly exploitable) weapons would work for me personally. This is actually done in Fallout 3, making it in my opinion one of the few things FO3 did better (that is, depicting non-humanoid Enclave bioweapons)

I think them talking stretches my suspension of disbelief way too far. Too fantastical and 'goofy' as it were and I know I'm not the only one. @@vaultdweller94 (just to be clear, im genuinely curious, not trying to be annoying.) well, why is that? if the intelligence isnt a problem then why is the talking? we know animals like whales and such, aswell as our other fellow apes have quite advanced communication, and the deathclasr are around and above the intelligence of the the average person, i dont think its too out there that they learned to speak from listening to the humans experimenting on them. especially since they were specifically made to listen to commands given to them.

I've tried Fallout 2 few years back, when I got stuck with ancient laptop for a few weeks and it was the first thing I installed on my new PC, followed by the first one right after I finished the 2. Amazing experiences both of them. And I'd consider them to be a great entering point, if you want to get into older RPGs. Other classics like "Planescape: Torment" or "Arcanum of Steamworks and Magic Obscura" do have fantastic writing (if you end up enjoying Fallout), but they come with frustrating bits Fallout 1 and 2 didn't seem to have, at least for me, as an relatively inexperienced RPG player.

Just be aware the OG games DO NOT hold your hand the way most modern games do. You won't always get a waypoint marker or anything other than context clues from the world around you. Not expecting that seems to be the source of most of the bad new reviews. And the grim tone of the first one followed by the often sadistic camp of 2. (You can play your PC as a complete 90's Edge Lord)

As a note, if you sneak into Mariposa you can indeed chat with the Lt. Idk if they changed it, but the original endings for Junktown implied Killian ran the town into the ground being a suffocating tyrant, whereas Gizmo allows the town to prosper, if controlled by crime

As someone who was in his early teens when Fallout came out*; I can assure you the graphics, gameplay, and the talking heads were dated for the time. I remember being high as balls watching my friend play the second one (he was in what I now know as Shady Sands/NCR) and we were talking about how old school it looked. However, the game quickly developed a hardcore following because of it's storytelling and depth. I never played the first and second until only a few years ago and I can say that I'm kind of glad that I didn't play it in my teens as I didn't have the patience at the time. *Damn, I feel old...

This game did for me for CRPGs what Chrono Trigger did for JRPGs. Where it streamlined and eases you into the genre in the best way possible. I draw the comparison because I think for both of these games, you don't have to be a genre fan to get into and fall in love with them, where these genres have a reputation for you needing to already be bought into the genre to enjoy them (there being a lot of apparent "best games ever made" that nobody has ever played)

Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game is genuinely my favorite video game of all time. It makes me sad that no game in the franchise has come even close to being as amazing as or reaching the heights Fallout: APNRPG has. Fallout 2 is bloated and has severe tonal issues, Fallout 3 also has tonal issues and suffers from unfortunate "Bethesda-isms", New Vegas comes close... but still has some tonal issues and also suffers from "Bethesda-isms" that takes me out of it (still a phenomenal 8/10), and Fallout 4 is a joke the fact that it calls itself "Fallout" is an insult. No game makes me feel a sense of dread and melancholy that Fallout: APNRPG. The style of the world that is built up from the ashes (and NOT pretending as this the world didn't end). The damn monsters, and even some humans, are horrifying and portray the brutality that a post nuclear wasteland would bring. I love it so much. Tactics, BoS, and 76 are spin offs that I don't care about (though 76 is pretty fun with a friend or too)

You don’t understand why 99% of people enjoy fallout, what your saying is like someone who says call of duty is their favorite video game because they love the horror movie vibes of that one mission where you play as a little kid running from a soldier, like okay that’s great but that has nothing to do with what that game “actually is” or what the design philosophy of the artists was during its creation, “Fallout” was never meant to be a game about “the SURVIVORS of the APOCALYPSE” lmfao the only reason that word is used in the first games title is because from a meta perspective, YOU the person playing the video game, the setting is apocalyptic to you, but unlike most pieces of art that take place in similar settings vibe wise, the characters in the game aren’t “survivors of the apocalypse” and there not living in a “post apocalyptic wasteland” because the characters in these games are the great great grandchildren of those survivors, this is just the world they’ve always lived in and have always known, here’s a good example for the idea I’m attempting to convey, lets look at the game “Assassins Creed 2”, it would be very strange to call that game a “post apocalypse” game, but from the perspective of a Roman citizen, assassins creed 2 takes place after the complete collapse and “apocalypse” of the Roman Empire and from their perspective, all of civilization, this is the case for fallout, the bombs dropping could be compared to the collapse of the Roman Empire, but the games aren’t about the immediate experience of the people who used to live in good’Ol classic America, being faced with having to live in this post apocalypse, Fallout is about how humans decades to centuries later HAVE MOVED ON and have begun just living their lives, they don’t view themselves as living in a POST apocalypse because they have no better conception of what the PRE apocalypse was like, then a 7th century farmer would when looking upon Roman ruins, Fallout IS NOT mad max, fallout is not a post apocalypse from the perspective of all the characters in the game including the player character unless your role playing a character who can break the fourth wall, you seem to have some understanding of this since you agree that fallout 3 has tonal issues, but I have absolutely no clue what you could be referring to when you say that New Vegas and Fallout 2 has tonal issues, for fallout 2 I could understand not liking the pop culture references, but I have a feeling that’s not what you’re referring to, Fallout 2 and New Vegas are perfect example of a POST-POST apocalypse setting, a setting where “the apocalypse” is ANCIENT HISTORY and is simply another footnote in the long and storied history of humanity, placed alongside events such as the collapse of the Roman Empire. In Fallout 1 we see the rise of small towns and the establishment of subsistence farming and trade routes and the creation of a new system of currency, in Fallout 2 we see the rise of CITY STATES and small militaries fighting one another, police forces and the specialization of labor which allows new technologies and inventions to take shape, and by the time of Fallout:New Vegas we see entire NATION STATES warring with each other, large economies of scale fighting over crucial resources just like America and china had been doing hundreds of years ago, Fallout is about the different aspects of human nature and how that nature clashes with itself to produce both good AND bad outcomes.

I may have an answer for the three pre made player characters. The three player character choices have a back story that may make Fallout more bleak. The first one in a dumb brute who gets violent in the vault all the time. The second one is a daughter of a KBG spy who is doing alot of theft, breaking, entering and maybe trying to escape anyways. The third is a chill dude however his charisma may be stealing the thunder of the overseer. So at the end of the day you are not the chosen one, just a liability to the overseer and the one the pulled the shortest string. You are not even the first or the second person sent out. What make it worse is the overseer may actually be planning to get rid of you. Get rid of a liability and solve an existential crisis for the vualt. Two birds one stone. The only way I can think of adding to this is if you do not come back to the vault in say two months to give a report the other three come out to do your job. And they will be a problem. In there own way to add a time motivation.

I don't feel like Fallout is a medium defining game; I can think of 2 games in total that I feel is heavily inspired by Fallout. Fallout sadly did not really have any significant impact on video games. I think it was "Warlockracy" that said the same thing. Those of us that are OG fans says it's genre defining, but it isn't. Fallout is sadly only a titan among those of us that really love it. If you ask people what they think of Fallout they will say: What is that? - "Yes I love New Vegas." - "Yes that was a fun TV show." Or god forbid: "Yes I love Fallout 4."

@@himmyjimmy90 We would most likely have seen even more Dungeons and Dragons if Fallout were never made. Tim Cain talked about Interplay being interested in using established IP licenses and not creating new ones. It is a small miracle that Fallout even got off the ground and did not die under development. Fallout was supposed to use a licensed RPG system to begin with. If anything the world of RPGs and media inspired Fallout not the other way around. There is no indication that Elder Scrolls, Diablo, Baldur's Gate, Planescape, World of Warcraft, KOTOR, Mass Effect, Dragon Age and so on was impacted by Fallout in a major way. Fallout is special because it is unique, there was no rush to emulate Fallout the same way there was a rush to emulate things like Doom, Command & Conquer, Diablo. Fallout is a one of a kind. Fallout 1 having a big impact on RPGs is one of those things we just go and repeat to ourselves, I used to do that too, but then I thought about it, and I can find no evidence for it.

@bringoni fallout 2 is my favorite despite the overuse of jokes I like the fact that you can play after the ending and the companion changes

@@ΓιαννηςΠαπαδημητριου-ο5τ no reason in particular, it took my like 3 playthroughs of NV to actually finish it, these games are just long and dense

To be Honest I think the character creation of Fallout 1 is dum dum compared to the bethesda games. If you dont choose the best skills, and dont follow a rout you soft lock yourself

Isn't there like a ton of fan-patches? Most cult classics have those. I'm playing first Legacy of Kain now thanks to one such amazing patch.

Surviving is so dumb, it’s much cooler to fail. I think failers are much better than low class survivors.

I think you’re giving fallout 1 way too much credit in your intro. While it was an amazing game that was a commercial success, I’d say it was greatly overshadowed by Baldur’s Gate. If indeed rpgs did need to be revived, it was Baldurs Gate that did so. You can see its fingerprints in RPG designs from then on pretty much.
