Hi. I'm Portugese living in the Netherlands. Films like these about Portugal, just fill my heart with joy. That is why I'm watching. So please don't get me wrong on my critical observations. Here is one: You show kind of an abandoned house at 8.12. I am sure this village is not in Portugal. Portugese rooftops and roof tiles, also of the surrounding houses are all but Portugese. You won't find a house in Portugal with a roof with bevelled edges in the ridge. (Wolfskap in Dutch). France, central or Eastern Europe probably. Can you clarify? Where did you take this shot?

Thank you so much for mentioning Madeira. We toured the mainland in 2021, really liked it - but fell in love with Madeira after spending six weekend there this past winter. Now, we are doing everything we can to get out of Michigan and become islanders. As much as we loved the Silver Coast (Nazare in particular), there is nothing like Madeira. Yes, you are not on the mainland but getting out is easy. There’s even a direct flight to JFK. So much simpler than Delgado in Lisbon. Thanks so much and we love your videos.

Just wondering, was Madeira too touristy? I'm also somewhat interested in Nazare, would it be a decent place for retirees, or would healthcare be a problem?
@twoamericansandadog7212
@twoamericansandadog7212 Жыл бұрын
@@ericyuan9718 no, only when the cruise ships arrived on Mondays. The tourists are always around, but they are not overly intrusive. Also, unlike the Canaries and the Balearic Islands, Madeira is not a spring break destination. You don’t have drunk college students patrolling the streets. In fact, the annual Carnaval parade (which is wonderful) is about as far removed from the atmosphere of Rio and New Orleans as you can get. As far as healthcare is concerned, we had one great experience when we went for COVID tests. Little waiting, saw a doctor, got results fast. Private insurance (which you will need to get quick access to regular doctors and specialists) is really inexpensive. We were quoted $200 a month as a couple of two on our late 50s with pre-existing conditions. And all our prescriptions are free. This is country-wide.

America, so great that even the people who hate it refuse to leave. Let that sink in for a moment. Unlike Communist shit holes that force everybody to think and dress and act alike, in America you're free to choose how you wish to live your life. I researched Portugal for part time living and potential residency, for over a year. We were getting set to go in early 2022. However, with the Schengen Visa, we wanted to go to Eastern Europe to reset our visas after 90 days, chiefly Georgia and Croatia. With the uncertainty of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, we suspected that conflicht might devolve into mass migration, food instability and financial chaos in Eastern Europe, so we bailed on our plans. Currently living in various South American countries for a year. We will likely give Portugal, rural France, Mediterranean and Eastern European countries a try in 2024. Nice work on this video.

Just as long as Americans leave their nasty politics behind them before moving to Portugal. Anyone concerned about whether Portugal has Amazon Prime shouldn't move to Portugal. You shouldn't be trying to replicate your US lifestyle in Portugal, you'll never assimilate or feel comfortable if you do. So wrong about rural areas far from cities. These are some of the best places to live, with very cheap housing, great nature on your doorstep and genuine people. Status seekers and shallow people should avoid of course. There are always facilities in local towns (health care, schools, supermarkets, cafes, restaurants). Why Americans flock to the large cities and the Algarve is beyond me.

I would totally adivse you to visit at least a month, even better two months before blindly choosing a spot to move to. Go to Lisbon, take a rental car and drive around the country. If you want to have a nice experience, , discover the south first, then take a week to drive up till Caminha right next to the Spanish Border in the North. You actually can drive north to south through the whole country in about ten hours. But take a week after discovering the south and drive up along the coast and go left and right discovering as you feel. Once reached Caminha area, take another week to drive through the mountains and countryside, more inland away from the coast back dwon to Lisbon. This should give you a pretty good idea of where you would like to settle. Enjoy your trip !!

Dave, félicitations 👏 Well said and up to date. Spot on. Recommendation: you might want to mention that it is not as simple as to apply for the Visa. It's an arduous and tenuous process. It is best to contact an immigration solicitor and be prepared to pay at least 3000 euros. Many European states are not as simple to just relocate. Yes, foreigners, especially Americans are sought-after, however, it's assumed that they all have "deep pockets". Most recently, prices have skyrocketed, utilities, food, travel and transport. Strikes are going on constantly. Say goodbye to dryers, dishwasher, central air and heat unless you own your own home and have these installed.

I believe teachers, dock workers, and train workers went on strike and will go on strike due to low wages. Yeah, I'm doing okay, but those foreigners coming in and throwing money around and thinking that bc things are tough for locals, their money will 'make things happen' is bull. They may buy a piece of land or big house and then find out they don't have road access to their property, or they cannot get their appliances hooked up for months, all bc they insulted the locals. I lived in the Açores for 1 year. Great in summer. Too remote, island fever, few activities for children, VERY cold, windy, and rainy in winter. I left for the mainland and am MUCH happier here.

I moved to Portugal from California two years ago, and there are too many great things to list. We were able to buy a large centuries-old country manor house with an acre of gardens and orchards for the price of a 600 sq ft condo in CA. The cost of living here is much lower, the quality of life much higher. It is true that immigration and housing speculation in Lisbon, the Algarve, the silver coast, and Porto has driven costs skyward. But in the interior of Portugal -- arguably most of the country--is a totally different story. It's far more affordable that Lisbon and still close to amenities, services, and infrastructure. But as with any location there are trade-offs to be weighed when considering moving to a new place. Do you want a quiet farm life, with land, trees, and wildlife, where fewer people speak English? Or do you want a coastal resort life in a condo with a golf course and a gin bar nearby where almost everyone speaks English? Do you want to live where it's hot and dry in the south or more green and lush in the north? Portugal has made moves to encourage immigration into areas of lower population density, but more steps need to be taken.

Dave! THe drug issue shouldnt be taken on that soft way! Drugs are forbiden but the crime/arrest only happens when you have more than a certain small amount. This has nothing to do or to compare with traffic - you cannot buy 1kg of cocaine or weed, from the neighbour, as we compared with what happens with US/Mexico. In fact we face a huge problem with the drugs coming from south america... I must underline - drug selling/buying is not legal in Portugal. About safety - the items that count when they made that ranking are considering the risks of terrorism and civil wars... We have a demotivated and low wages police, wich is getting weaker (by the laws and politics), and getting older, once the all country has no renoable generations and the few that we have, are not interested in becoming law enforcement agents. Sorry for the errors on my writting, ....

The issue with the Nothern European countries you've mentioned is the fact that they have really bad climate with way too much rainfall, it's cold for months on end and the people aren't anywhere near as hospitable and friendly as the people in Southern Europe. Also, the reason for Southern Europeans to move to the Nothern European countries in the past was the fact that the salaries used to be a lot better. That has changed over the years hugely. There is still a difference but the cost of living is also a lot higher in Nothern Europe, so the money doesn't go much further either. So, basically there is no reason at all anymore for people to move to a ountry with crap climate anymore. The mediteranian is the place to be. Of course Americans are loving it as they get to know what living and enjoying life is, rather than being worked to death, which is what's going on in the US. I think Portugal is the best place for a few reasons. Spain and Greece have been spoiled by money, with way too many tourists as well as many Nothern European retiries buying whole areas, sometimes even villages within these countries. Italy on the other hand has way too many laws and to even move there is a mission and you need permits for everything...The South of France is untouchable as it's hugely expensive to buy anything in the nice Southern towns. Portugal has it all. Unspoiled beaches, not overpopulated, great food, fantastic people with no issues and they are extremely hospitable, natural beauty, the best climate in the whole of Europe...It really is Europe's best country to live, as long as you have a decent income...
@FighterFred

@@zafira976 Agreed, and Portugal has far better visa rules as well. Southern Spain is very popular, lots of Swedes in Marbella for example. Often the young, successful entrepreneurs go there. Portugal is cheaper, but as you don't know the language the bureaucracy is a nightmare. So you need to contract a lawyer, which is not cheap. Southern France is of course on another level, very nice if you've the money.

I have worked and lived around the globe working in the Petrochemical (Oil) industry. There are 2 places I seemed to like the best. One was Kenitra Morocco, which is just south of Portugal. The only thing is that you have to be aware that it is a Muslim country and you have to be ready for some of their holidays. Other than that, I found it friendly, safe, and very affordable. The other place was Italy. I actually worked offshore close to Venice so most of my time was there or in hotels. I would spend time in Rovigo, Milan, Padova, and a few other places. I really liked Northern Italy and found some other small towns that were like living in the Swiss Alps. The cost of living was affordable depending on where you were. Obviously Milan was expensive and Venice was a tourist trap. But in Venice Mestre (where the real Vinicians live) was cheaper. So I started looking at Portugal and found the prices incredibly affordable but now that I am retired, the 20% tax has me scratching my head. I know they have a VAT tax but what other way are immigrants taxed?

Just an observation, the reason drugs have been decriminalized in Portugal is not because we have no crime, but quite the opposite. In the late 90s, walking at night in Lisbon or Porto was unsafe due to heroin addicts who would mug people. There was a high level of violent crime associated with drug use, and even parking a car required paying a drug addict, or else your car would be scratched. The decision was made (which I initially disagreed with, but I was mistaken) to treat drug addiction as an illness instead of a crime and utilize our tax-funded healthcare system for treatment. This approach proved remarkably successful as addicts sought help and started providing information to the police about drug dealers, leading to a rapid decrease in drug consumption. As a result, Portugal now has low levels of drug use (although there is a slight increase in drug consumption among the wealthy, such as cocaine). However, this system relies heavily on our 48% taxes, and unfortunately, it may not be sustainable if many people evade tax payments, which is becoming a belief of neo-liberals. This creates a delicate situation as doctors, teachers, and all civil servants need higher pay, and there is significant pressure due to inflation and rising house prices for ordinary Portuguese citizens. Maintaining such a system becomes challenging if many million-dollar Americans, Brazilians, or Asians (who view European socialism as communism and resist paying taxes) want to move to Portugal without generating tax-paying jobs. To preserve the country's peace and authenticity, it is evident that those who wish to buy a house or stay in Portugal for one or two months for vacation (without living and paying taxes here) must be heavily taxed; otherwise, authentic Portugal will turn into a massive hotel devoid of any Portuguese essence. I understand your love for Portugal, and I never loved Portugal as much as when I was living in West Philadelphia during my post-doc.

While I'm all up for bringing new people into my country, honestly this is destroying our housing sector, Our government is too lax in taxes and isemptions on imigrants, and It's sad that I can't see myself owning a house before I'm 35, and I have a higher paying job than 60% of the population, so I can't even imagine the despair of families that live on minimum wage. The massive imigration to Portugal from other wealthier countries should be restricted, or in the very least, highly regulated and taxed. Investment funds have a say in this as well, but what the statistics won't tell you here is that our government is one of the most corrupt in europe, (probably) only followed up by Greece.

I feel as negatively about the UK as you do about the US. The same things are happening, and in particular expensive real estate, and the rise of popularism. That said, if I could get a green card to live in the US, I would be very tempted. There are so many different options. You can choose your geographical situation and climate. It has become an expensive place though. I think that is one reason why Americans look elsewhere. It is the same with the UK. Both me and my boyfriend are software developers and we can't buy a house because the prices are insane due to Americans and others coming to Portugal to live with a lot more income in their pockets. This is why the Portugal youngest generation will have to imigrate. I will have to leave this country unfortunately if I want better conditions. So everytime I go to Lisbon and see more and more people talking in other languages instead of Portuguese on the streets, I get sad. I wish Portugal didn't allow people to come live in Portugal so easily. We should be more like Japan. I think in some years, there will not be that many Portuguese left in this country and that's just sad. Portugal is becoming the country for everyone except for us Portuguese...
