A good example of the level 2 passing errors can be found by playing one of the defending skill games. It’s the one where you are in-between two players and there’s a path that connects the two offensive players. They’ll just bend the ball all the way outside the path with ease so you can’t get it

Oh man. You've captured exactly what goes on not just in FIFA (I presume, since I'm not a FIFA player) but in PES too! 100%. Konami have been doing this shit regularly since at least PES 2016. It's bad on Level 1 pass assistance, and frankly shocking on Levels 2 & 3. It's why I'm near exclusively a full manual player these days, because you get so much more satisfaction. Years of learning to pass and move, or in defence learning to anticipate and block lanes, gets punished _far_ less often!

I get screwed 3-4 a weekend with a nutmeg as im cutting out passing lane or my defender blocks a shot, wont move for 3 seconds and they score on rebound right to them. I noticed that endgame players always get locked on to lose balls. No matter if you read the pass and your clearly closer to the ball the end game player will always win the ball. You are totally right about the massive impact of the AI on passes and how they modify the direction based on their own criterias. Sometimes even it goes against you. So many through passes go to the wrong place cause AI thinks there are more chances to reach the player even that the chances of goal are massive reduced

The situation at 9 minutes with verratti happens almost 100% of the time in every game mode, FUT, career mode, pro clubs. The pass is always weighted to where the keeper just collects it no matter what power you apply to the pass.

Once I was making a through ball to my striker and the pass could have gone through but the game corrected it so that it was an easy interception for the opponent.The worst thing about it was when I went into replay and looked over it again the game showed where my pass should have gone and I saw how much the game corrected it.

I think the problem with your videos you rarely show when it happens for you but in this one you do which makes a good argument.. One of the biggest things I noticed is while it happens to my opponent a lot I was able back in fifa 16 and 17 to make it happen FOR ME. Yes I could increase the chances of it happening for me (just a theory but it worked as far as im aware) which involved a match long strategy and a few certain players who could consistently pull off unrealistic bs which gave me goals I didn't deserve whether I was winning or losing.

Let me clarify this. When you press the Ground Pass you signal to the game who teammate you want to pass the ball to and NOT where you want the ball to go. The target of such a pass is a player, the target of a cut-through pass is a specific space and not a player. Back to the Ground Pass, what happens after you press for it, the game calculates your chances for advancing the play. If there are signifigantly more chances for you by using the player you signaled for but from another angle that the one you chose, the game goes on with ITS better judgement. This is the Passing Assistance that everyone has enabled by default. Even if you turn it off, it sets itself to ON for MP, simply because it has to balance the game and the other player surely has it activated.

I've recently installed FIFA 15 and a lot of these problems existed back then too, shitty passes that the defender should have intercepted easily, the assistance choosing for itself instead of where I told it to and that final clip also happens very often. For it's credit the defence has certainly gotten worse, sometimes is my bad defence but a lot of the times it does get blocked, like a few of the passes that get trough in the last FIFA and this one are outright ridiculous.

It’s a clear tactic by EA to help lesser players. They have a similar thing in the UFC game where if you are too far to land a punch or kick, the game makes your fighter zip forward so that they can land it.

So like if fighter A ducks, sometimes if fighter B throws a punch he will punch downward so that he hits him, rather than fighter B just choosing an uppercut or something. I mention this because it shows it’s an obvious design choice by fifa and not just bad design by chance.

I honestly thought I sucked at this game, every time I tried to build up and tried to play the killer defence splitting pass to the layer unmarked and making a run it would simply auto-lock to the nearest player regardless of whether his marked or not. As for manual defending,which pretty much is centred on anticipation, is the most unrewarding form of defending in the game. Either I can't switch/tackle until a pass is made/shot taken or my AI players make the stupidest decisions to open up my defence, despite me switching to them to reposition themduring my opponents build up.

I started in fifa 02. I’d expect myself to be better at football understanding than most kids I face who weren’t even born in 02... this explains why I wasn’t looking for game exploits, illogical passes... only playing a nice game of football, which never leads beyond g2... glad I haven’t touched fut20 after 19 was such a disappointment

Whilst I agree with all of this, with the clip at 6:22, pulling a defender out of your back line and man marking a forward who’s onside is not the best way to defend in that situation. You rarely see defenders irl leave their line like this before a pass is even played. It’s actually very risky and if the offensive AI was half decent in this game, your opponent’s other forward would’ve completely screwed you with a diagonal run into the space you opened up

If you go into the files of FIFA 08 if i remember correctly, there is a notepad file with a list of almost 60-70% of all players with clear indications for the AI on what should they do in different situation. The more valuable player, the more chances that the other AI will allow him to go through with a pass or with the ball. I dont think they removed that from the game, they just hid it better.

you could literaly change the chance for offside trap (usual setting in 20%) and the chance that the goalkeeper will get the ball, so i change the offside trap to 40% and the goalkeeper catching the ball to 80% and me and some friend got really good playing around the glitches and bugs of fifa08 that the usual score was 5+ - 5+ goals, after the changes we could barely mark 1 goal

Don't forget the pressing to shoot in front of the goal and the game purposely make the striker takes an extra long touch for the goalie to collect the ball.
